Administrative/Business Leadership

I have over thirty-five years of academic and institutional leadership experience. My administrative

experience includes an ongoing term as the Dean of the School of Business Administration,

University of Vermont, USA, and a term as a very successful Dean of the John Molson School of

Business at Concordia University, the largest business school in Canada, sixteen years (nine of

which were as CEO or General Manager) as senior manager in multinational corporations, three

years as the Director of Executive MBA program at Saint Mary’s University, and one year as

founder and Director of a university-wide interdisciplinary research centre (Centre for Responsible

Organizations) at Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada.

2011 onward

Dean, School of Business Administration (BSAD), University o Vermont, (UVM) USA

UVM is a comprehensive small premier research university in the US. I took on the challenge of

transforming its business school into a world class ranked school. Some of the achievements of

the school during my first year include:

AACSB re-accreditation: BSAD at UVM was one of the last AACSB accredited schools

on a 10-year re-accreditation cycle. In the previous review cycle it was put on a 5 year

continuing review due to significant and major problems and issues. AACSB switched in

the early 2000s to a 5 year cycle since several business schools tended to lose momentum

for continuous improvement during 10 year cycles. In spite of the 5 year continuing

review during 2002 to 2007, BSAD lost momentum and the continuous improvement

processes stopped. We kick started the process and put into place several key indicators

in order to achieve re-accreditation.

Updating the Undergraduate Curriculum: The undergraduate curriculum had not been

reviewed since 1974 and lacked distinction and was out of touch with organizational

needs. I struck an ad hoc committee that spent 750 collective hours benchmarking against

the most innovative programs, obtaining feedback from alumni/ employers/ students, and

examining courses and program offerings at other colleges at UVM. The revised

curriculum received a unanimous vote from the faculty and positions BSAD for the 21st

century in offering a distinctive program. The revision comprised consolidation and

reconfiguration of the current concentrations and drawing on more electives from other

colleges. The students will opt for one of three strategic themes: sustainable business,

global business and entrepreneurship and one of five concentrations: accounting, finance,

marketing, business analytics, and management. This eliminates several of the earlier 9

concentrations which are less relevant academically and for which we had chronically

low enrollments. The curriculum also emphasizes experiential learning, career

development, and business communications. Even though the new curriculum has not yet

been rolled out, the 2012 entering class has the highest average SAT score in UVM’s

history.

Developing a Differentiated and Relevant MBA Program: Another ad hoc committee

struck by me has recently revamped the MBA program following a process identical to

the review of the undergraduate program. The MBA program had not been reviewed for

38 years and lacked distinction. The revised curriculum will be effective for students

entering in the fall of 2014. This 12 month program will work in partnership with several

leading businesses and will be focused on sustainable entrepreneurship and differentiate

us in the market.

Career Management Services: BSAD did not have a career development function. I

engaged the Board of Advisors to take on this challenge and they helped raise funds to

hire a career development professional (and we continue to raise funds to hire employer

relations professionals) to build this area. Students are being prepared for successful job

searches through career advice, resume writing, dress and etiquette workshops, mock

interviews, and networking events. The business community and alumni have been

actively engaged in our career management process.

Experiential Learning and Community Engagement: The revamped curriculums include a

large component of experiential learning. Significant new experiential learning

components were added to the program. This helped us engage our alumni and the

business community as well as provide practical knowledge to students. The initiatives

include (i) a major boost in internships, (ii) live projects with organizations, (iii) students

developing experience in organizing and managing events (business pitch competition,

family business case competition, family business awards), (iv) coaching and sending

students to national and international case competitions, (v) executive special topic panels

(e.g., financial regulations, interactive marketing, careers in finance, careers in

sustainability, etc..), (vi) networking events with alumni visiting campus and networking

on sector specific roundtables with students and students visiting New York and Boston

to be hosted by alumni and networking with groups of alumni, and (vii) inviting a large

number of guest speakers in classes, at the school, and at the campus level.

Faculty and Staff Recognition and Retention: I instituted awards for staff recognition and

outstanding scholarship to recognize and reward staff and faculty members who excelled

in their respective domains. We are working on revising our lists of target journals to

recognize and reward excellence and balancing workloads to ensure more equitable

distribution of effort by faculty members.

Reputation Building and Alumni Engagement: I worked actively to engage alumni and

the Vermont community in the business school. This has involved writing to,

telephoning, emailing, and personally visiting alumni, companies, and state government

officials. Several of the new initiatives that I have started at BSAD involve active

engagement by alumni, business community and state officials. These include:

1. Business Idea Pitch Competition: Competition open to all UVM students,

organized by BSAD students, funded by BSAD alumnus, judged by alumni and

members of the Vermont business community (entrepreneurs and venture

capitalists). The winners work with the ecosystem of support created at the school

in the past year: venture capitalists, incubation at the Vermont Center for

Emerging Technologies, business acceleration at MassChallenge in Boston, and a

crowdsourcing funding platform.

2. Family Business Awards: To recognize and honor family businesses set up by our

alumni that have achieved economic success and have given back substantially to

the community. The judges for this competition include prominent donors and

alumni.

3. The First Global Family Enterprise Case Competition. This will be the first ever

global family enterprise case competition in the world. The competition is in

January 2013, we closed entries in September 2012 and we have 14 schools

already registered for the 2014 competition! The top family business and

entrepreneurship programs all over the world have signed up for this competition.

The first competition in January 2013 will put BSAD on the global map with

teams from Sweden, Germany, Spain, Italy, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico,

US, and Canada.

4. Deans Leadership Speaker Series: In addition to many guest speakers in classes

and at the school level, this brings prominent corporate CEOs and business

leaders to talk to the entire campus.

5. Vermont Investors Forum: This forum will be held at UVM for the first time and

hosted by the business school students. The forum enables our students and

faculty to interact with leading entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, state

government officials, businesses, and listen to new business ideas.

Fundraising: I have met over a hundred alumni and donors over the past year to update

them on our progress (curriculum review, careers, internships), and get them behind the

vision and goals of the school. During the past year, fundraising receipts amounted to

around $1 million but we have proposals worth $20 million in the pipeline and expect a

great deal of success during the next year.

2007 to 2011

Dean, John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada

JMSB is the largest business school in Canada with over 9,000 students in undergraduate,

graduate, and doctoral programs and over 350 full-time and adjunct faculty, and 120 staff

members. The JMSB is a diverse workplace with 67% of the faculty members being born outside

Canada. The student body exhibits a similar diversity. The large size of the school reflects the

complexity and multiplicity of stakeholders that who need to be engaged and whose concerns

addressed for organizational success. Some of the achievements of the school during my tenure

as Dean are highlighted below. These achievements were made possible by an effective and

dedicated leadership team that we were able to forge.

Fundraising: Over $50 million from private donors for research chairs/ professorships,

research centers, graduate student scholarships, student initiatives and to partially fund

the new business school building. Successful management of the transition from multiple

locations to the new $120 m seventeen floor LEED silver certified business building. The

new Research Centers included the David O’Brien Centre for Sustainable Enterprise and

the Bell Centre for Business Process Innovation. Thirteen new chairs and professorships

included those in sustainable enterprise, entrepreneurship & family business social/

environmental accounting, relationship marketing, consumer behavior, strategic

management information systems, financial derivatives, integrated risk management,

financial planning, employee motivation, evolutionary consumer behavior, and corporate

governance.

Engaging the Business Community: The success in fundraising was been based on the

close interactions that we developed with the business community and alumni and on the

confidence and excitement generated about the strengths, successes, and the academic

potential of the school. The business community and alumni were actively engaged by

creating multiple interfaces between prominent members of the business and the school

and showcasing the faculty’s research and the talent of our students. The profile of the

school’s advisory board was raised and they were more effectively engaged as the

school’s ambassadors, influencers, connectors, and fundraisers.

Financial Viability: Quebec universities are funded for each full time equivalent (FTE)

student by the provincial government. While the provincial funding is in constant decline,

we were constrained by a cap on tuitions at unrealistic levels of $1600 per year. In this

extremely difficult financial situation, the school had suffered large deficits in past years.

We significantly improved the financial viability of the school by changing the mix of

undergraduate and graduate students. The provincial funding is higher for graduate

students and even higher for thesis based research students and doctoral students. As

such, we raised FTE funding by 50% and enrollments by 40% by increasing the

proportion of graduate/doctoral students to enable the school to benefit from funding

priorities of the provincial government. At the same time we improved the viability of

private programs and started successful new programs. The school now has a healthy

surplus of revenues over expenses.

Academic vision and Strategic Planning: Initiated the school’s strategic planning process

with a shared vision to educate business leaders with excellent foundations in traditional

management knowledge and the ability to manage in future complex, multi-stakeholder,

sustainable global business environments. The school signed on to the UN Principles for

Responsible Management and this helped guide curriculum revisions to strengthen our

strengths in traditional disciplines and add ethics, sustainability, globalization,

entrepreneurship, and management of emerging technology to the curriculum. At the

same time, we raised admission standards, improving academic quality of the student

body.

Rankings: We worked on the academic quality of, and student experience in, our MBA

program and for the first time JMSB was ranked in the Financial Times top 100 EMBA

programs in 2010 and The Economist top 100 MBA programs during 2010 and 2011,

rising in the rankings. We improved our benchmark indicators on traditional disciplines

(Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Operations, Entrepreneurship, and Management) while

increasing focus on sustainable operations of the school, sustainability in our academic

curriculum and in student initiatives/conferences including community/social

entrepreneurship and international development internships. This helped us improved our

rankings in Corporate Knights to 3rd

in Canada and Aspen Institute’s Beyond Grey

Pinstripes to #34 in the world and helped our students win international competitions in

CSR, ethics and sustainability. This also helped us impart a more holistic education to our

students while they remained rooted in traditional disciplinary knowledge. We created a

new MBA Community Service Initiative and also an International Co-op focused on

sustainable development. These initiatives helped students develop strengths in

social/sustainable entrepreneurship.

New Programs: Based on discussions with the local community, other universities, and

graduate programs in non-business disciplines, we undertook the development of a

Graduate Diploma in Business Administration in 2009. This program was successful

beyond our expectations. In its second year (fall 2010), the program accepted 120

students from an applicant pool of 350. The first entering class of 2009 included 60

students from an applicant pool of over 200. These included 12 Ph.D. students in

medicine from McGill, and graduate students in engineering, natural sciences, social

sciences, and fine arts. The entering class of 2010 included 22 Ph.D students from McGill

in medicine and natural sciences. The average GPA of the entering class is above 3.75. In

2011, we finalized a new joint graduate degree in business and law with the University of

Montreal.

Existing Programs: We significantly improved the financial viability of the academic

programs by managing the process of closing chronically losing executive programs and

energizing high potential private and executive programs such as the MBA, EMBA, CA,

CMA, and MBA/CFA, to improve enrollments and generate healthy surpluses. We also

put into place faculty workload and class size guidelines and consolidated operations to

reduce inefficiencies.

Accreditation: The school had been put on notice by AACSB due to lack of progress on

the assessment of learning, academically qualified faculty ratios, and the lack of strategic

planning. When I joined in 2007, the situation was unchanged and the school was on the

verge of losing its AACSB accreditation. We persuaded AACSB to give us an extension

and we put into place a process for implementing Assessment of Learning, initiated and

implemented the process for strategic planning, implementation, and monitoring. We

were able to secure internal and external funding to hire 30 new full time faculty

members to improve our Academically Qualified faculty ratios. AACSB reviewed our

progress in 2008 and re-accredited the school in January 2009.

Student experience: We created a sponsorship program for undergraduate and graduate

case competitions to coach students for national and international case competitions and

fund travel. During my tenure, the students attained over 95 podium finishes in national

and international case competitions. This helped raise the national and international

reputation and profile of the school.

Cultural change: When I interviewed for the position as Dean of the John Molson School

of Business, I was told that due to historical reasons, the biggest challenge I faced was a

faculty that was “divided, demoralized and de-motivated.” I believe that I successfully

seized that challenge and restored a collaborative spirit in the school. I believe that my

most significant contribution was the implementation of a positive operating culture of

the faculty, restoring transparency, fairness, impartiality, due process and equity.

Academic Experience and Research Leadership

My research was recognized via the award of the federally funded Canada Research Chair (CRC)

in Organizational Sustainability. This was the first CRC in sustainability in a business school.

My research has been published in the top ranked management journals (such as Academy of

Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal

of Marketing, Academy of Management Executive, and Business Ethics Quarterly. I have worked

with other leading scholars to co-found and build the credibility of a new field of scholarship at

the Academy of Management: Organizations and the Natural Environment. In 2002, I co-

founded a community of scholars, Group of Researchers on Organizations and the Natural

Environment (Gronen) that brings together North American and European scholars to develop

research agendas and foster collaboration across the two continents. This community meets

every two years in Europe.

I have won several peer awards for my research including Best Dissertation Award, Social Issues

in Management Division at the Academy of Management 1996, two Best Paper Awards at the

Academy of Management 1997 and 2005, and a Best Paper Award at the Administrative

Sciences Association of Canada 2003. I was a Fulbright Fellow in 2001-2002 and I served on

research adjudication committees of councils such as Social Sciences and Humanities Research

Council of Canada for three years. In my role of institutional leadership in helping develop a new

field of scholarship, I have been invited to participate in a number of international and national

research bodies such as the Canadian National Roundtable on the Economy and the Environment

(Greening of the Curriculum Committee); the US National Academies (including the National

Science Foundation) Taskforce on Environmental, Social and Behavioral Research; the Research

Advisory Board of the Oikos Foundation for the Economy and Ecology at University of St.

Gallen, Switzerland; and the Corporate Sustainability Advisory Committee at the Houston

Advanced Research Centre, among others. I have been invited to advise several corporations and

not-for-profit organizations such as the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation,

Coke, and SNC Lavalin, among others. I serve on the Boards of eConcordia, Knowledge One,

and Marianopolis College in Montreal.
