Thesis title - “Study of hadronic final states in high energy interactions”

Analysis - lepton-lepton (e+e-), hadron-hadron (hh), hadron-nucleus (hA) interactions at c.m. energy > 10 GeV using some phenomenological models and statistical

approaches – a detailed study of various final state characteristics

List of publications (as author name S. Dahiya): 1. Analysis of multiplicities in e+e- interactions using 2-jet rates from different jet algorithms, S. Dahiya, M. Kaur and S. Dhamija, J. Phys. G 28 (2002) 2169. 2. Inclusive studies of pion-nucleus interactions in the framework of the Lund fragmentation model, S. Dhamija,

M. Kaur and S. Dahiya, J. Phys. G 28 (2002) 1239. 3. Bunching parameter analysis and multifractal multiplicity distributions in hadron-hadron and hadron-nucleus interactions, S. Dahiya, M. Kaur and S. Dhamija, J. Phys. G 28 (2002) 321. 4. Analysis of pion-nucleus interactions in the framework of a multistring model, S. Dhamija, M. Kaur and S. Dahiya, Can. J. Phys. 80 (2002) 1571. 5. Analysis of hadron-nucleus interactions in the framework of two multistring models, S. Dhamija, M. Kaur and S. Dahiya, Phys. Rev. C 63 (2001) 035201. 6. Multifractal multiplicity distribution in e+e- and pbar-p interactions from non-linear markov process, S. Dahiya and M. Kaur, J. Phys. G 24 (1998) 2027. 7. Work continued …

CMS Physics

Started research work in Dec. 2004 with Prof. S. Banerjee and

Dr. M. Guchait (no funding was available) – to learn and work on

CMS physics

Worked on ‘top quark physics’ – some preliminary studies using

CMKIN and FAMOS

Submitted a project proposal to DST in consultation with Prof. S.

Banerjee and Dr. M. Guchait

Working on …

CMS Physics

• DST funded research project (Ref. No. SR/FTP/PS-36/2005, Dated:

20th March, 2006)

• Working in collaboration with Prof. S. Banerjee, Dr. M. Guchait and

M. Dittmar

• Work in progress on “Constraining gluon PDF using Z+jet process at LHC”

• CMKIN, FAMOS & CMSSW – generator level and reconstruction level using

datasets

• Presented in previous India-CMS Collaboration meetings

• Presented in CERN-CMS week (PDF Workshop), 22 June’07

Infrastructure & Support …

Joint “High Energy Physics & Electroceremics research lab”

High-end computing facility with

DELL Latitude (D820) laptop, HP Pavilion a1522in desktop system

Very good internet connectivity

Printing & scanning facility

On-going research projects

One funded by DST & two funded by DRDO

College administration is very supportive and encouraging

Human Resources …

Two JRFs are working in our lab

Our’s is the only college in the city with research facilities

Only one Post Graduate college in city but no research facility

Many students have expressed interest in research work

Generating human resources is a possibility.

Motivation …

Interest in HEP – the fundamental science

LHC will be one of the challenging experiments on earth

so, it may unravel many new facts, which may add new

knowledge in science

Many excitements are expected to happen – the aspects are

very attractive

Willing to be involved in these activities

Motivating …

Need of the hour

Introducing research at Under Graduate Institutes may

play an important role

In promoting science and raising its profile with young people,

particularly by increasing student participation and motivation

Reversing the trend away from science careers and qualifications

by inspiring and capturing the imagination of young people

Commitment & Effort…

No expertise in hardware

Aquaintance with physics analysis tools can be exploited for work ahead

Doing physics analysis and working with people in India-CMS Collaboration

Assuring commitment and sincere effort

Thank you
