IXoyd David and Ruth Sanders plan to take a furlough in 1990.Send them word if you would like them to visit your church.

Mixed BlessingsStarla Joy, Loiz Carlos and family are happy to be back on the

field! After nearly eight months in the States, there was somereadjustment to be made ... getting used to warmer weather andthe rains ... coming back to an almost empty house ... (they hadsold most of their furniture and their car before going to theStates) . . . thus, they were also without transportation.

The children had to get their American school reports translatedto get back into school here ... Luiz Carlos discovered he was onthe verge of diabetes ... Kyula had to undergo an endoscopy withthe result of showing a hernia on her esophagus.

Starla is re'Organizing the For-Llfe [Ministry to the Whole>MaiiProject} as its new president. The group has been meeting weeklyto evaluate all activity and plans for the future.

Even before this, there were documents to prepare and turn overto the Government to confirm that the farm land we were leasingwas being used as proposed so that a new contract could be signed. This is the land where the camp grounds and the "homes" for theelderly are located.

There are now three elderly living on the land, besides the localdirector and his family. Selection is being made for the next needyoccupants. Transportation is a Necessl^!

The Azevedo'sdepend upon God and His people to supply theirspiritual and material needs. They need $1000 for Monthly Livinglink! They need $1000 for Monthly Service Link!

Your personal commitment and generosity to them and thework for which they are responsible, will make a big difference incarrying out their own commitment to Christ and His ministry tothe "whole-man." Designate and send your gift to:

Victories In Church Growth

You have read the reports throughout these now 41 years of theestablishing of churches in Brazil. Lloyd David and Ruth Sandershave labored along with the mlsslonartes who have shared In theextension of the church in many locations. In more recent years, the national staff of laborers have caused the extension to multiplyinto other areas and other states. In fact, volunteers appearregularly to open op new works . . . many of which it has beenimpossible to accept because of lack of finances.

American mission funds now join with the Brazilian missionwhich has organized as an evangelistic commission to help weakchurches and start new churches. Each member (volunteerpreachers and elders) will share monthly to establish a fund for thepurpose of calling an evangelist and support him whileestablishing a new work. Each church can affiliate by sharing inlike manner and the missionaries will also share in thissj)onsorship.

The first efforts wfll be to help a young "tent-maker" evangelistto go 800 miles to work in a new city and area where relatives havealready moved on ahead.

The second effort is to open a new church In the new capital ofthe new state call Tocantins ... some 800 miles north of Brasilia.

Camp Grounds Remodeled

After nearly a year of not being usable, the Camp Grounds arebeing remodeled by the local churches of the area! Definite plansare being laid to make a new emphasis to have Sunday School andpreaching services for the "homes for the elderly" community aswell as for the local rural area.

The Camp Ground dining hall will be used temporarily or untila small chapel and class rooms can be built to accommodate thenew work. Youth from the various churches in the area gave a dayand a half of work to help get the grounds ready for a special campin April. Pray for a Solution to This Need!

Transportation Needed Now I

Homes for the elderly has developed faster than we havebeen able to meet the needs. Although local buses passwithin a half mile, it is impossible to meet emergencies intransportation of food stuffs and medical needs.

WE MAKE AN URGENT APPEAL FOR $6,000 FORA USED VOLKSWAGON MINI-BUS to meet this need.

Visitors Bring Encouragement

Mac and Kala Bamett have been active in friendship in Brazilformany years. Kala is the niece of Ruth Sanders. Through Ruth, they invited the two daughters ofAdeil Fonseca [Pastoral leader ofthe Pinheiro Church of Christ in Sao Paulo and sister-in-law toStarla Joy] each for a year's study in the States, living in theirhome. Adeil, in turn, invited Mac and Kala and their two sons,Mac and Marc, to come to Brazil and spend Christmas with themin Sao Paulo. In January, they visited the Sanders in Brasilia andvisited some of the churches and the social service project of the"homes for the elderly" and the area for children's homes. Inseeing the homes and the Camp Grounds, they felt challenged tohelp in raising funds for farm equipment for the proposedplan ofself-support. Mac and Kala are personally challenging churchesin Western Kansas to raise $15,000. Living in Healy, Kansas, thefamily are all members of the Dighton Christian Church.

Westward — Ho!

Forty-oneyearsago wetalked about going "Westward" into theState of Goiasand toward where the new federal capital would bebuilt. Jose Alves, now ministering to the Nova Gloria, Goiascongregation, some 200miles from Brasilia, proposes resigning totravel to the new growing State of Rondonia, over 800 milesnorthwest of Brasilia.

There, he expects to establish a home for his family of fourchildren, support himself by establishing a work center as atechnician for electrical domestic equipment, and "Preach theGospel and Establish a New Church. Relatives and friends havealready moved to this new State!

We hope to help in this transition and with transportation andexpense funds from three to six months.

Pray for this Venture of Faith!

The neighbor church at Ceres, Goias with pastor Joel Moreira, will oversee the church of 35 members at Nova Gloria until thepastor can be replaced.

Pray for This Need Also!

The Brasilia Church, in cooperation with the Christian College,is planning to open three new locations for student preachingpoints and new churches this year.

Pray for This Expansion!

Ralph and Ruth Culler, ministers of the Sunset HillsChristian Church in Kansas

close fellowship for Starla and Luiz Carlos and their family. Forseveral years, they have wanted to come and visit the work inBrazil. In January 1989, this opportunity arrived and wewelcomed them into our home for their short stay. They visitedBrasilia, spoke in some of the churches in central Brazil and gotacquainted with the project "For Life" [Ministering to the WholeMan\ We were encouraged and up-lifted with their visit!

The local Brasilia Church, under the supervision of two of thechurch ladies, Wanda Bastos and Dalva Rodrigues, has gone outinto the hi-ways and bi-ways to bring in "street children" in anoperation called "It is Always Christmas"! Some 75 to 100 ofthese children come once a month to the Church annex for aprogram of Bible stories and orientation, for lunch and clothing.Bibles and special booklets are given out where they are sure to be

read and cared for. In a recent bulletin to the church, these womenwrote:

"It is necessary that we go out of the comfortableness of ourchurch and home, to stop fattening ourselves spiritually, whilelivesdie without any spiritual food. They live without love, andin ignorance. Theyare suffocatedand oppressed. They do notknow the Lord and because of this, they go from bad to worse.

"Children become dangerous adults and strong candidatesfor hell. They take lives, steal, rape and fall into drugs. Theydestroy themselves, their families and all of us.

"You and me, all of us who are saved by grace, are responsible to take these lives to Christ. 'Let him know that he which

converteth the sinner from the error of his way, shall save a soulfrom death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.' James 5:20.

"We must leave the walls of our church and of our homes.

What is your position? What is your preocupation concerninglives that are perishing?

"Join us in thinking positively, with the Word of Truth, holding high the banner of faith, of service and of love! Makeyours the words of Paul in I Corinthians 10:33, 'Even as I pleaseall men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profitof many, that they may be saved.'

"Contribute clothing, used or new, and food of any kind.Cooperate faithfully with our 'Christmas baskets,' for the'street children' will benefit as well!"

A delicious lunch of cake and "vegetable pie" with Guarana juicewas served. Kalinka [Starla's daughter] mixing the juice. Ahuildapreparing to serve.

Golden Agers In Local ChurchThere were 24 present at the first "Golden Ager's meeting on

Wednesday afternoon in the annex of the local Brasilia Church. Itis held each week and it is a time of getting together in praise andinspiration, in learning about their bodies, their minds and theirsouls in relationship to the Kingdom's outreach. The Church inBrazil is becoming aware of the need to nurture, encourage andstrengthen those of the Golden Age (50 and above) that they mightcontinue to have useful, ful-filling lives. Some of these are alreadyinvolved in the ministry among the street children . . . others withorphans . . . and all have shown a great interest in the elderly of"Integrated Life" (Ministry to the Whole-man) in their homes andpersonal needs. A work room has been set aside in the church forsewing for the needy. The need for this age group to have a placewhere they can relax, meet with others, learn, and give and receivecomfort and strength, a place where they can know joy andfulfillment... is being met through the local church. As fruit ofthis ministry, one lady has placed her membership in the localchurch and another was recently baptized.

The Christian Church In Central Brazil

And Its Penetration Into Other States

{Approximately Seventy Churches!]

The Lloyd David Sanders family was the first to establish workfor the Christian Churches in Brazil, arriving in 1948. Otherfamilies soon followed and centers for evangelism were begun inGoiania, Brasilia and Belem.

As Brazilian leadership began to gather force, more and morechurches were established. With several voluntary associations anda strong emphasis on new church evagelism, we will see furtherexpansion in all directions.

Mission Emphasis"Needy Fields of the World" and "Cross-Cultural Fields" were

the points of emphasis during the week of missions studies (Oct.16-22) promoted by the Bible College and Brasilia Church.

Missionaries Gerald Holmquist and Earl Haubner broughtchallenges on the practical aspects of being a missionary inCross-Cultural fields. Brasilia Church sponsored missionaries,Benedito and Isaura, brought studies and a report on their work inBeio Horizonte. At the concluding session, there were sixteendecisions for missionary service and a $200.00 monthlyFaith-Promise pledge was received in the Brasilia church.

A special report of the week from Wycliff Summer School ofLinguistics and their mission association of national ministry[Alera-"Beyond"). . . was that Brazil has 230 Indian tribes withIBS languages spoken. Only 28 of these have the New Testament intheir language and there are still approximately 90 to 100 tribeswho do not have any "Word of God" in their language. Wycliff"Beyond" has annual classes in Brasilia for training translators.
