AffordAble dreAm trips

This is the year to go someplace epic. In 2015, exotic places are trending and new destinations are emerging. And several of them are more affordable than you might think. Catch a total solar eclipse in the Faroe Islands, see The Hobbit movie set's Hobbit holes on a New Zealand farm, or check out the new ecotourism hot spot dubbed

"the next Costa Rica." This roundup of dream trips also takes you to Cuba and a few other emerging destinations where travel restrictions are loosening and the U.S. dollar goes a long way.

Cuba

Travel to Cuba has been off-limits to American tourists for decades, but U.S. government restrictions are loosening, giving the curious a first glimpse at the country just 90 miles to the south. Last month, President Obama announced that—for the first time since the Cuban Revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power in the 1950s—talks have begun to restore full diplomatic relations. For now, Americans can travel to Cuba only with a tour company that holds a special government cultural-exchange license through the newly established People-to-People program. Take a trip sooner rather than later to see Cuba in its most authentic state, before McDonald's and Starbucks find their way onto street corners.

If you go: Natural Habitat's Undiscovered Cuba tours give you the chance to experience Old Havana's restored architecture, lively salsa music and big 1950s American cars cruising the streets. You'll tour tobacco farms and hike virtually unknown national parks as you talk politics and issues with Cuban scientists, naturalists, academics, farmers, community activists, artists, business owners and more.

Faroe Islands

About halfway between Scotland and Iceland, the Faroe Islands are one of only two places in the world where you'll be able to see the 2015 total solar eclipse from land. On March 20, the moon

Jamie Moore, SmarterTravel.com

2016-2017

will appear to block out the sun and enshroud the islands in darkness for a few minutes at 9:41 a.m., just as it did in the year 1612, according to the old Faroese legend. The remote archipelago country governed by Denmark will mark the event with a major celebration, featuring the symphony orchestra, choirs, dancing, tours, activities and local cuisine specialties.

If you go: Ask a local to tell you about the legend of the eclipse. Also keep an eye out for the aurora borealis in the Faroe Islands' clear winter sky. Located near the Arctic Circle, the islands are popular places to spot the lights. This year also debuts a new knitting festival in the small village of Fuglafjørður, the first knitting festival in the area that takes place in people's homes.

Oman

On the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula next to the United Arab Emirates, Oman is a peaceful Middle Eastern gem with stunning beaches, mountains, forests and deserts that stretch for miles. Only since 1970 has the oil-exporting country established an infrastructure of roads and ports, and then resorts, gradually emerging as a tourism destination. Visitor statistics show a 32% jump over the past few years, and Oman tour operators expect to see more growth with several recent new developments: the Opera House in Muscat, international standard golf courses, the Alila hotel opening, luxury catamaran boat trips, and luxury tented beach and desert camping.

If you go: Get an authentic Arabian experience with Mountain Travel Sobek's Oman Explorer tour, one of the tour operator's new bucket-list trips for 2015. The trip takes you "Wadi bashing" along rocky river beds in a four-wheel drive. You'll also camp in luxury tents on the beach and stroll through Omani villages without a trace of Western influence.

Singapore

In 2015, this Asian country of 63 islands celebrates 50 years of independence since separating from the Federation of Malaysia, and the nationwide commemoration lasts all year long. Golden Jubilee events in Singapore began with a New Year's Eve fireworks display in Marina Bay and continue with a 50th-themed parade in

February and a National Day Parade in August. In the fall, the new National Gallery Singapore opens and the National Museum of Singapore will revamp its permanent galleries. As a lasting tribute to the year, a new Jubilee Walk is under construction to connect and mark historic monuments in the civic district and Marina Bay area. A new pedestrian bridge will link Merlion Park to Marina Promenade. Singapore is also the host of the 2015 Southeast Asian Games/Para Games.

If you go: Between 50th anniversary events, save time to sample the country's national dish: stir-fried chili crabs with tangy gravy. Another authentic food experience is at the open-air hawker center's food stalls. Don't miss Singapore's Chinatown trishaw night tour.

Myanmar

As this isolated Southeast Asian country has begun opening up to visitors over the past few years, tourism has exploded. "We believe that 2015 might be the last year to see a more innocent Myanmar that hasn't been strangled by overdevelopment," says Elias Garcia of Global Basecamps tours. Garcia says you can still visit some areas and be the only foreign traveler, a rare experience in the world today. Although it is quickly modernizing, Myanmar has held onto its traditions. Locals still wear sarong-like longyi attire and prefer to travel by canoe or horse-drawn carriage. The temples of Bagan are a true must-see, on par with the pyramids in Egypt or Angkor Wat.

If you go: Both the Global Basecamps' Trekking & Temples tour and the Go Ahead Tours' Myanmar: A Cultural Journey through Burma tour take you to Bagan to see one of the world's largest collections of Buddhist temples. The tours also include visits to the gold-plated Shwezigon Pagoda, an important Buddhist pilgrimage site where sacred relics are enshrined.

Nicaragua

Tour companies are calling Nicaragua the next Costa Rica. This verdant ecotourism hot spot has untouched rainforests for hiking, an active volcano where you can go "ash boarding" and quiet beaches that draw international surfing competitions. In Nicaragua, you'll avoid the

crowds of neighboring Costa Rica and find prices that are nearly half of what you'd pay across the border. The country also just opened its first five-star resort, Mukul Beach, Golf & Spa, and ocean-view villas are surprisingly affordable. In spite of Nicaragua's war-torn past, perceptions of the country are changing. Nicaragua scored the highest for security levels among Latin American countries in a 2013 Gallup poll.

If you go: Wander the charming Spanish colonial city of Granada, home to the new boutique Tribal Hotel. The Inn at Rancho Santana opens on the southwest coast this March. In November, the new Emerald Coast Airport opens, offering connecting flights to the beach from Managua's international airport.

South Africa

A perennial bucket-list favorite, South Africa shows up on the travel radar this year because 2015 marks 25 years since Nelson Mandela walked to freedom. Honor the hero with a visit to the Apartheid Museum or Robben Island (where he spent 18 years), and you'll feel South Africans' sense of pride in their progress. Once you pay for airfare, this country is an excellent value destination, especially as the U.S. dollar is strong against the South African rand. Last year, Cape Town was named the 2014 World Design Capital and was transformed by more than 460 design projects. The initiative spurred tremendous growth in the city's arts and culture, says Shaheed Ebrahim of Escape to the Cape tours. Don't miss the new iconic sites, revamped public squares, quaint neighborhood markets and design quarters.

If you go: The smarTours South Africa Highlights & Safari tour hits the Nelson Mandela sites as well as Cape Town, Table Mountain and Kruger National Park. It also includes a safari experience in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

Iran

Iran is still an unexpected destination for most Americans, but the tide is definitely turning. With the 2013 election of a new president in this Persian country, visa restrictions have relaxed and more tourists are visiting Iran.

Eventplanning

How to Plan an Event www.wildapricot.com/event-planning-guide

What does event planning involve? Here is a high-level overview are some of the basic steps you’ll need to follow when developing an event. We can't identify all of the details you’ll need to think about (since much of it will depend on the type of event you are holding), but we hope the following provides a starting point for your event planning.

6 Steps to Get You Started With Event Planning

1. Develop Event Goal and ObjectivesThe very first step is to establish a tangible goal and objectives. (e.g., why are you organizing this event and what do you hope to achieve?)

2. Organize a TeamAny event takes a concerted team effort to handle all of the details. Consider identifying one key Event Manager or Event Chair as well as individual Chairpersons for subcommittees, such as:venue management; speakers; entertainment; publicity; sponsors; volunteer management

3. Set a DateThe date might already be pre-set for a reoccurring event, but if this is a new event, be sure to consider the following before firming up your date:

Give yourself enough time! Ideally, you should have 4-6 months to plan (depending on the nature of your event)Be aware of statutory and religious holidaysAvoid school holiday time periods (e.g., winter, spring and summer holidays)Check dates with key participants – e.g., speakers, presenters, VIP guests, etc.

4. Brand Your EventIf you want your event to stand out, you need to choose a timely and compelling theme that sets you apart from your competition. This means that you need to come up with a dynamic overall theme and you need to take great care with the actual name – since it can be a key attention-getter, especially in online media.

Brainstorm names: When you are brainstorming the event name, think about:how is your event different from other events in your sector?what are you hoping to convey through this event?Create a Tagline: Once you’ve come up with a name, also try to craft a tagline – a short, memorable branding slogan that describes the event. Design a Logo: The final step will be having a logo created to represent your event. A logo can be an effective branding tool – offering immediate recognition of your event in all of your publicity and promo items (e.g., Tshirts, water bottles, bags, etc.)

5. Create a Master Plan:This plan should encompass all aspects of the event, including:

Venue, logistics & catering management (contracts, permits, insurance, etc.)Speakers/presenters (identifying, confirming, logistics & management)Activities/entertainmentPublicity/promotion (online & off-line, e.g.,: web page & online promotion; events calendars; printed programs; media relations; signage; social media, etc.)Registration (online sign-up, payment and tracking; on-site sign-in, etc.)Sponsor/partner managementVolunteer managementAlso see Event Checklist - see link below.

6. Determine Administrative ProcessesIn other words, how are you going to keep track of your planning, registration, budget, guest and speakers lists, etc.?

If your website or membership database is not powered by Wild Apricot, you may want to determine how to best organize and track all of your event information. You could review event management software tools through a directory, such as Capterra (http://www.capterra.com/event-management-software).

WEALTH MANAGEMENT

• 62% of HNW clients say that the digitization of wealth management services is good overall, but they still want to meet often with an advisor.

• 17% of HNW clients say technology is essential.

• 48% of HNW clients rate cyber risk and hacking as a top concern related to the use of technology.

• 45% of wealth managers believe detailed analysis of financial results and performance is the best way to build trust with clients.

The survey also confirms that it is largely a myth that wealthy young investors are entirely self-sufficient and that they communicate primarily through virtual channels, with little or no interest in face-to-face relationships with advisors. True, they want to make their own decisions, and they are certainly at home in the digital world; but they also want to work with one or more financial advisors to get second options and to validate their views, on the go, across any available channel.

Some other notable observations:

Investors over age 50 tend to be more focused on the security of data.

Understanding the feelings and preferences of clients on a deeply personal level is at the core of retention, the underpinning business objective for the industry.

A significant number (42%) of wealth managers surveyed believe that legacy systems are

“somewhat of a problem.”

Technology is the only way forward for wealth managers in a competitive financial landscape. But communication should not be limited to virtual channels, and digitization should not be seen as a replacement for the bonds of trust formed by human relationships.

A great transfer in wealth from aging baby boomers to younger generations is under way, and it is reshaping the wealth management industry in ways that demand greater efficiency and adaptation by incumbent firms. The shift to new investors is happening against a backdrop of disruption—an explosion of data, the rise of digital generations and the robo-advisors to serve them, and secular headwinds in the global economy. Generations X and Y move effortlessly across both the analog world of face-to-face meetings and the virtual world of digital platforms that enable the fast and accurate service they expect.

To move in lockstep with these young investors—to remain competitive as the future unfolds, with a burnished and tech-forward brand—wealth management firms must invest in a transformation built around a modern core banking system. And they must do it without alienating older clients, still the bedrock of their business.

To gain a unique view into the experiences of both clients and advisors as the wealth management industry faces change, Forbes Insights, in partnership with Temenos, surveyed more than 60 wealth managers around the world and 35 High-Net-Worth (HNW) clients about the evolving banking experience—how they communicate, their needs and the importance of technology. The research is presented in a recent Forbes Insights report, “The Rise of Bionic Wealth: A Hybrid Model of Cutting-Edge Technology and Advisor Expertise Heralds the Future for Wealth Managers.”

Among the key findings:

• 42% of wealth managers believe that a mix of digital and offline ways of communicating is ideal.

• 34% of HNW clients want either digital-only or a mix of digital and offline communication.

Emergency Care for your pet

By www.aspca.org

Unfortunately, accidents do happen. When a medical emergency befalls our furry friends, pet parents may find it difficult to make rational decisions, especially if something occurs during the middle of the night. That’s why it’s crucial to have an emergency plan in place—before you need it.

Finding 24-Hour Emergency Care for Your Pet

Talk to your veterinarian about an emergency protocol. Does your vet provide 24-hour service or does he or she work with an emergency clinic in the area? Some practices have multiple veterinarians on staff who rotate on-call services after hours. Check to see if your primary care vet has partners who might answer an emergency call. It’s also a smart idea to keep the name, number and address of your local emergency clinic tacked to the refrigerator or stored in your cell phone for easy access.

Signs Your Pet May Need Emergency Care

Your dog may need emergency care because of severe trauma—caused by an accident or fall—choking, heatstroke, an insect sting, household poisoning or other life-threatening situation. Here are some signs that emergency care is needed:

Pale gums Rapid breathing Weak or rapid pulse Change in body temperature Difficulty standing Apparent paralysis Loss of consciousness Seizures Excessive bleeding

Next Steps

Pets who are severely injured may act aggressively toward their pet parents, so it’s important to first protect yourself from injury.

For dogs: Approach your dog slowly and calmly; kneel down and say his name. If the dog shows aggression, call for help. If he’s passive, fashion

a makeshift stretcher and gently lift him onto it. Take care to support his neck and back in case he’s suffered any spinal injuries.

For cats: Gently place a blanket or towel over the cat’s head to prevent biting; then slowly lift the cat and place her in an open-topped carrier or box. Take care to support the cat’s head and avoid twisting her neck in case she’s suffered a spinal injury.

Once you feel confident and safe transporting your pet, immediately bring him to an emergency care facility. Ask a friend or family member to call the clinic so the staff knows to expect you and your pet.

First Aid Treatments to Perform At Home

Most emergencies require immediate veterinary care, but first aid methods may help you stabilize your pet for transportation.

If your pet is suffering from external bleeding due to trauma, try elevating and applying pressure to the wound. If your pet is choking, place your fingers in his mouth to see if you can remove the blockage. If you’re unable to remove the foreign object, perform a modified Heimlich maneuver by giving a sharp rap to his chest, which should dislodge the object.

Performing CPR on Your Pet

CPR may be necessary if your pet remains unconscious after you have removed the choking object. First check to see if he’s breathing. If not, place him on his side and perform artificial respiration by extending his head and neck, holding his jaws closed and blowing into his nostrils once every three seconds. (Ensure no air escapes between your mouth and the pet’s nose.) If you don’t feel a heartbeat, incorporate cardiac massage while administering artificial respiration—three quick, firm chest compressions for every respiration—until your dog resumes breathing on his own.

Why spending money on fAncy bAth sAlts cAn help you sell your house

We get it. You’re pragmatic. You’ll buy that deep cleaning and decluttering your house are important steps in a comprehensive home staging process that could help your home receive higher offers and sell faster. But what’s up with those staging recommendations like making your bathroom feel like a spa and your kitchen smell like Rachael Ray just stopped by? Is that froufrou stuff really worth your time?

It is. Actually, the fact that you’re a pragmatist is the reason you’re going to want to shell out for some luxury staging items. The science is in: You’re not just selling your home, you’re selling a lifestyle, and those fancy final touches make a powerful sales pitch.

That’s right. Although the $11,000 you spent on a sturdy new roof might help seal the deal after the inspection, a gorgeous $30 jar of bath salts could be what prompts the offer in the first place.

The Psychology of Emotional Selling

There are plenty of rational reasons for a buyer to want to purchase your house — that new roof is just one of the many. But according to Peter Noel Murray, Ph.D., in “Psychology Today,” decision making and emotions are inescapably intertwined. So much so that people with brain damage affecting the connection between emotions and rational thought are unable to make decisions, even with a clear set of pros and cons before them.

What’s more, functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, results have confirmed the active role emotions play in consumer decisions about brands. How else can the overwhelming success of brand names over generic products be explained when generics are often the exact same thing?

People want to be associated with the brand that feels more upscale, or as Terrylynn Fisher, a REALTOR® with Dudum Real Estate in Walnut Creek, Calif., says, “Everyone aspires to have more than they have.” In a 2007 study, researchers found that people’s enjoyment of wine increased in tune with the wine’s perceived price — even when it wasn’t actually expensive.

Think of your home as the luxury, brand-name product, and all of the other houses on a buyer’s list as the generic version. Those homes might have a new roof as well, but when it comes to falling in love with a house, it’s that fancy label — aka, the chic bath salts or fancy wine decanter on display — that could make all the difference.

When a home appears luxurious, it promises aspirational home buyers the lifestyle they have worked so hard to earn. They deserve to live in a house with fancy wine decanters and an orchid in the bathroom. They’ve earned it.

you’re not just selling A home, you’re selling A lifestyle.

THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE WALLPAPERW I T H O U T L O S I N G Y O U R S A N I T Y

First, Check to See If Your Walls Were Primed

Anyone who’s managed to remove wallpaper lickety-split likely (and luckily) had walls that were sealed with wallpaper primer before they were papered, says Geoff Sharp, owner and founder of Sharper Impressions Painting Co., which operates in several cities including Atlanta and Indianapolis.

Priming, which became more common in the 1990s, prevents the wet glue from soaking into plaster or drywall and forming a tough-to-break bond. Loosen a corner or seam with a putty knife and pull. If it peels off in a sheet, you got primed!

Being able to peel off wallpaper in complete or partial sheets after lifting the corners with a putty knife is called dry stripping. With well-primed walls, dry stripping should work for the entire job and you could finish a room in a couple of hours at most.

Trust in the Power of Water

Not primed? No worries. Removing wallpaper — vinyl, foil, or paper — comes down to high school chemistry. “Wallpaper glue is water based, so water is a super-efficient remover,” says vlogger Chris Berry, known as The Idaho Painter. “It works so well, we use it instead of chemical wallpaper strippers on both drywall and plaster.”

Here’s what to do with water:

Score or perforate the paper and its backing in sections so water can soak through and loosen the glue. The pros recommend a scoring tool called the PaperTiger (under $20) because it doesn’t harm the wall.

Douse the perforated paper with hot water using a pump or compression sprayer (under $50). OK, wallpaper-phobics, here’s where the myth that DIY removal is the worst gets legs. The big mistake most people make is using a regular old spray bottle or damp rag to wet the paper. This leads to hours of fruitless scraping (and griping) because the paper and its backing don’t get sufficiently saturated. The sprayer, on the other hand, gives you the firepower to really soak the glue.

Let the paper soak for about 15 minutes and scrape it off with a putty knife.

We won’t pretend this process is quick, even if it is easy. It could take you six hours for an average room, but that’s way better than the days of effort it could take if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Another option for harnessing the power of H20 is steam. Wallpaper steamers, which you can rent from home improvement or hardware stores, are effective and “much neater [than water] because you’re using moist heat,” says Jason Stratos, owner of Stratos Painting Co. in Springfield, Mass. But they can be tough for steamer newbies. They’re bulky and awkward to use (Done an upper body workout lately?) and it’s possible to burn yourself, warns Gina Paris of Gina Paris Design in Conneaut Lake, Pa.

So if all this sounds like a hassle, stick with a compression sprayer, which is easier to manage.

Tip: Scoring, soaking, and scraping are still the best technique even with dense, woven grasscloth. But factor in the extra, painstaking step of tearing off as much of the top layer as possible to expose the backing first, because “the material rips off in thin, stringy shreds,” says Berry.

Tip: Walls with wood paneling are the one exception to using water, since water and wood don’t mix. In that case, use a gel chemical stripper that won’t penetrate the wood.

Decide If Chemical Wallpaper Stripper is Right For You

If water is so effective, why does stripper exist? Some pros prefer it because stripper dissolves glue faster than water. But it likely emits low-grade VOCs, or toxic chemicals. And water is cheap. So why not go au naturel? By the way, if you use stripper, the pros recommend DIF Ultra Concentrate (pricing varies, ranging from about $5 to $35 online).

Don’t be Fooled by the Urban Myth of Fabric Softener

“Fabric softener just makes the process more complicated, smelly, and even messier than using just plain old water,” says Berry. You end up mixing glue with the chemicals from fabric softener. In addition, Berry says fabric softener may harm drywall.

Whydoesrunning makeushappy?University of Montreal http://www.sciencedaily.com/

The joy of running. That sense of well-being, freedom and extra energy that runners often experience is not just a matter of endorphins. A study at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre (CRCHUM) shows that the "runner's high" phenomenon is also caused by dopamine, an important neurotransmitter for motivation.

"We discovered that the rewarding effects of endurance activity are modulated by leptin, a key hormone in metabolism. Leptin inhibits physical activity through dopamine neurons in the brain," said Stephanie Fulton, a researcher at the CRCHUM and lead author of an article published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Secreted by adipose tissue, leptin helps control the feeling of satiety. This hormone also influences physical activity. "The more fat there is, the more leptin there is and and the less we feel like eating. Our findings now show that this hormone also plays a vital role in motivation to run, which may be related to searching for food," explained Stephanie Fulton, who is also a professor at Université de Montréal's Department of Nutrition.

Hormone signals that modulate feeding and exercise are in fact believed to be closely linked. Endurance running capacity in mammals, particularly humans, is thought to have evolved to maximize the chances of finding food. This study suggests that leptin plays a critical role both in regulating energy balance and encouraging behaviours that are "rewarding" for the person's metabolism, i.e., engaging in physical activity to find food.

The researchers studied voluntary wheel running in mice in cages. These mice can run up to seven kilometres a day. In a laboratory, the physical activity of normal mice was compared with that of mice who underwent a genetic modification to suppress a molecule activated

by leptin, STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription-3). The STAT3 molecule is found in the neurons that synthesize dopamine in the midbrain. This "mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway" is a like a motivational highway in the brain.

"Mice that do not have the STAT3 molecule in the dopaminergic neurons run substantially more. Conversely, normal mice are less active because leptin then activates STAT3 in the dopamine neurons, signalling that energy reserves in the body are sufficient and that there is no need to get active and go looking for food," explained Maria Fernanda Fernandes, first author of the study.

And is leptin as important for motivation to be active in humans? Yes. "Previous studies have clearly shown a correlation between leptin and marathon run times. The lower leptin levels are, the better the performance. Our study on mice suggests that this molecule is also involved in the rewarding effects experienced when we do physical exercise. We speculate that for humans, low leptin levels increase motivation to exercise and make it easier to get a runner's high," summed up Stephanie Fulton.

Mice, humans and mammals in general are thought to have evolved to increase the return on effective food acquisition behaviours. Ultimately, hormones are sending the brain a clear message: when food is scarce, it's fun to run to chase some down.

A new study shows that the "runner's high" phenomenon is also caused by dopamine, an important neurotransmitter for motivation.

the mental game of baseballmental toughness Wins ball games

Bill Cole, MS, MA The Mental Game Coach™

How important do you think your mental approach is to your baseball performance? If you are a high-level player, you know it is very, very important. I don’t like to put percentages on it, but you would probably agree that it is critical to your sustainable success. You know mental toughness in baseball is huge.

When I was the Sport Psychology Coach for the Stanford Baseball Team they were ranked number one in the United States. We worked on mental toughness every day. We also worked on focus, mental preparation and building and maintaining routines and mental recovery strategies.

This article gives you five mental game of baseball strategies I used with the Stanford Baseball Team that you can use right away in your own game.

1. Learn To Control Your Focus: The most important part of the mental game is attentional control. Where you place your focus, in what way, and for how long is key. You need to learn how to choose the appropriate attentional cues so you keep your mind tuned in, not out. The mental game of baseball helps you know what these cues are.

2. Keep Your Mind In The Here And Now: Good baseball is played one pitch at a time. Do that and your mind stays in the moment, the now. One way to facilitate that is to have breath focus. The mental game of baseball helps you learn how to find your breath, track it, and allow it to center and focus you.

3. Stay Poised And Patient: You want to play aggressive baseball, but you also need to remain self-aware, and tuned in to what is happening around you. This is vital to being a plugged in

player who makes things happen. The mental game of baseball helps you develop this fine-tuned personal awareness.

4. Develop Confidence And Self-Belief: If you don’t believe in yourself, who will? Everyone around you can tell you how good you are, but if you discount this encouragement, it will never enter your head and heart. The mental game of baseball helps you build an inside-out foundation of self-approval so your confidence flows.

5. Use Mental Rehearsal: Get a competitive advantage with your mind by playing the game in advance, using visualization. Go to the movies in your mind and mentally rehearse what you will be doing in competition. You can plan for contingencies, problems, or map out your strategy and see yourself winning before you actually do it. The mental game of baseball helps you use your imagination to great effect.

When I was at Stanford University we had a belief in our power, and in our destiny. The head coach would get up before a game and ask everyone,

“You are about to go out and play in a major college baseball competition. Is there any other place you would rather be? Does it get any better than this?” The guys would then realize that it doesn’t get any better than playing the game you love. The mental game of baseball helps you realize this fundamental, game-altering truth.

I want you to succeed mightily in your baseball career. I want you to reach all of your baseball potential. The mental game of baseball can help you do that in a big way.

Why PILATES for GOLF is EssEntial to BEttEr CoursE Play™

BY PATRICK HODGSONwww.americangolf.com

Golf typically doesn’t find itself associated with the physical pounding and taxing of the body as other sports such as basketball, football, or hockey. Nevertheless, one might be quite astonished to uncover the amount of strain that the physique of a golfer truly endures.

At each turn of a drive and with each bend of the knees, golfers put themselves in jeopardy of overusing particular muscles as mileage on the greens accumulate. One feasible solution to this imminent peril is Pilates for Golf. In fact, payback associated with this style of exercise has ranged from advanced core strength to enhanced flexibility to greater body balance. Besides injury prevention, the totality of these benefits has been linked to positively impacting the club swing.

The way that Pilates assists the golf swing begin with posture. Extraordinary attention is given to the position of the spine. This stimulates the reduction of lower back tension for competing players. As a result, the swing becomes more precise since enhanced posture eases other portions of the body such as the shoulder and wrist. Developed mechanics make for a greater probability that a swing can become more powerful and accurate.

Tiger Woods and LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam are two notable individuals who are often referenced on blogs as being participants who have reaped the benefits of Pilates for golf. Atomic Pilates owner Nika Eshetu, who is also a PMA-certified Pilates Instructor and NASM Golf Fitness Specialist, agreed with the positive sentiments of these assertions.

“Pilates works on stability, strength, and mobility. By working on strengthening the glutes and core, Pilates can help golfers increase distance with their swing. In working the deepest abdominal and back muscles, golfers are likely to be stronger and minimize pain and injury.”

The inception of Pilates for Golf regimens occurred in the early 2000’s when Sarah Christensen and Butch Harmon created the program with the intention of targeting biomechanics of the golf swing. Harmon, who is considered by most to be the premiere trainer in the sport, was quoted as saying that the program allowed him to hit the ball 20 – 25 yards farther.

Today, Pilates for Golf at-home media are populating at a rapid rate. Private lessons by experts such as Eshetu are also on the rise. Are you willing to add this system to your regimen? Have you tried Pilates for Golf before? Let us know. Perhaps more birdies and lower scorecards are in your future.

5 benefits of TENNISBy Jack L. Groppel, Ph.D., USTA | For Active.com

Tennis has historically been called the sport for a lifetime. But is this true? According to scientists from a variety of disciplines, tennis is still one of the best sports anyone can choose to play. The Facts:

1. People who participate in tennis three hours per week (at moderately vigorous intensity) cut their risk of death in half from any cause, according to physician Ralph Paffenbarger of Harvard University School of Public Health. (Paffenbarger not only studied over 10,000 people over a period of 20 years in his landmark 'College Alumni Health Study', but also finished over 150 marathons over the age of 45.)

2. Tennis players scored higher in vigor, optimism and self-esteem while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes or non-athletes, according to Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues in a study done at Southern Connecticut State University.

3. Since tennis requires alertness and tactical thinking, it may generate new connections between nerves in the brain and thus promote a lifetime of continuing development of the brain, reported scientists at the University of Illinois.

4. Tennis outperforms golf, inline skating and most other sports in developing positive personality characteristics, according to Dr. Jim Gavin -- author of The Exercise Habit.

5. Competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics, inline skating, or cycling, according to studies on caloric expenditures.

Is it any wonder that scientists and physicians world-wide view tennis as the most healthful activity to participate in? Other sports may provide excellent health benefits, as well as stimulate mental and emotional growth. But no other sport received such acclaim for its great benefits physically, mentally and emotionally.

humAn ‘mini brAins’ groWn in lAbs may help solve cancer, autism, Alzheimer’s

(CNN)A Harvard medical pioneer calls it "astounding" — an "incredible achievement" and a "quantum leap forward" in the battle against cancer, autism, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

What's going on? Scientists at Ohio State University say they've figured out a way to grow the genetic equivalent of a nearly complete embryonic human brain.

Technically, they're not quite "brains." They're called brain organoids — pieces of human tissue grown in petri dishes from skin cells.

These little blobs of tissue, 2-3 millimeters long, could help researchers test drugs and other treatments that may help prevent, fight and maybe even cure some of the most devastating disorders and diseases of our time.

In addition to Parkinson's disease, autism and Alzheimer's disease, they could also lead to unlocking the mysteries of schizophrenia, epilepsy, traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. Millions of people suffer from all these disorders and diseases worldwide. This lab-grown "mini brain" includes most characteristic of a human fetal brain including an optic stalk and a bend in the mid-brain region. (Click to expand.)This lab-grown "mini brain" includes most characteristic of a human fetal brain including an optic stalk and a bend in the mid-brain region. (Click to expand.)

"The idea of taking skin cells, reverting them back to a basic stage of development and then teaching them how to turn into the cells that make up the brain is something we have been dreaming about for some time," said CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. "It is exponentially closer to reality now. Furthermore, the idea of using these 'mini brains' as a testing

ground for therapies could help doctors figure out the best treatments for individual patients as opposed to the 'one size fits all' approach that is often used nowadays."

Scientists have been making brain tissue organoids in the lab for less than a decade.

Japanese scientists were among the first to prompt cells from mice and humans to form

"layered balls reminiscent" of a part of the brain called the cerebral cortex, according to the science journal, Nature. In 2011, Madeline Lancaster, a scientist a the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology in Vienna, was able to grow an embryonic brain.

Ohio State biomedical researcher Rene Anand said his team's work is different because "our organoids have most of the brain parts."

"I'll give you one example: If you want to study Parkinson's, you need the mid-brain. The best I can tell from all published research on organoids is they don't have the mid-brain. We have the mid-brain we are already moving toward trying to study them."

Anand said he has grown organoids that include 98% of cells that exist in a brain of a human fetus at five weeks.

"I think it took all of us by surprise," Dr. Rudolph Tanzi — an Alzheimer's research pioneer at Harvard told CNN. "The results were absolutely astounding ... it's an incredible achievement."

Creating a fetal brain that includes so many different types of brain cells amounts to a "quantum leap forward," he said. Tanzi co-discovered all three genes that cause early-onset familial Alzheimer's, according to his Harvard biography.

techactuality

Anand said using the breakthrough to learn more about Alzheimer's is a "high priority" for his team.

Despite all the excitement, Anand is quick to point out that the project is still at a very early stage. "The sooner we commercialize it and make a model available, the sooner everybody else can jump in and use it to solve these problems." Brain organoids may help researchers find key solutions to some sub-types of autism within 10 years, Anand said.

"Right now, it's like we're climbing Mount Everest and we're at Base Camp One," Anand said. "You know, you have to stop, get your oxygen together, then move up to the next step. So, we've still got a ways to go."

As you might expect, growing human brain organoids poses a lot of head-scratching questions.

Here are five big ones:

1. Does this mean scientists could grow a miniature version of your "brain?"

Sort of. If a lab technician used some of your skin cells, they could grow an embryonic brain organic that would have your genetic material. Could that brain organoid be developed into a fully grown brain? No, that's not possible yet. A fully grown brain would need a vascular system and other parts before it could meet the official definition of a brain. "They are not capable of growing beyond where they are," said Anand.

"We have no intention of going beyond that."

2. Exactly how would brain organoids contribute to new treatments?

Scientists would use them to mimic human brains deteriorating from Alzheimer's or Parkinson's and then study how they react to innovative treatments or newly developed drugs.

"You still have to find a way to accelerate the aging of that brain, the pathology, to mimic a disease like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's," said Tanzi.

3. Is it possible that brain organoids are conscious?

No, said Tanzi. Because these tissues don't have any input. "The brain doesn't work alone. The brain needs sensory input. The brain in a dish is not getting sensory input. We depend on our limited sensory system — our five senses — to provide input to the brain. The brain interprets that information and integrates it. And then we're putting everything we experience in context based on the information that's already stored in our brains through synapse."

4. Theoretically, could this research lead to a future with artificially intelligent machines that have humanlike brains?

It's not out of the realm of possibility, Tanzi said. "If somebody someday figures out how to put a brain into an AI that has sensory input — now you're creating AI hybrids with organic brains. Then, that's a whole different story. Then, you're talking about what's been covered in science fiction movies. But I would say it's very far away, if at all."

5. How long will it take for brain organoid research to lead to breakthroughs?

"You need to get this system into hundreds of labs studying these different brain diseases and let everybody take a shot at it. No one lab's gonna do it," said Tanzi. "We can say 10 years, but if you put that brain system and replicate it in the right lab, that could come down to five years. You need experts who know each disease, working in that system."
