INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEWDuring a brief overview, teams learn about the challenge and that
their goal is to impress the rest of us with their sculpture’s WOW
factor. Additional specifications can be built in, such as points for
height. Or, if you decide to exclusively build sand castles, the number
of spires can count toward your score. (approximately 10 minutes)
ROLES AND GOALSTeams discuss the process goals that they want to meet:
communicate clearly and concisely, garner the ideas of all
participants, or utilize skills and talents from everyone on the team.
Establishing roles lends insight into workplace dynamics and can set
the stage for a meaningful team building experience. (approximately
10 minutes)
SCULPTURE DESIGNThe teams examine their tools and building materials at this stage: shovel, bucket, trowel, brush, etc. Teams create drawings
or models to better communicate their vision. We are constantly amazed by the diversity and creativity of our clients’
designs. (approximately 15 minutes)
CONSTRUCTION TIMEDuring the construction phase, teams have a lot to consider: how feasible is this struc-
ture? How large does the pile of sand need to be to achieve the design? What tools would
work best to create specific details? (approximately 60–90 minutes)
SCULPUTURE PRESENTATIONSTeams prepare a presentation to unveil their finished product. Not only do they describe
the details of their sculpture, but they detail the team processes that allowed them to
build it: collaboration, decision–making, communication, etc. The presentations are
often fun and light–hearted, sometimes slightly competitive, but always enjoyable.
(approximately 10 minutes)
JUDGING OR VOTINGAfter construction is completed, the teams’ sculptures are judged by the facilitator, or
other elected person or group. Alternatively, they can be voted on by the various teams.
Points are given for meeting specifications and wow factor. (approximately 5 minutes)
DEBRIEFAll teams reconvene to talk about their experiences during the Sand Sculpture Challenge program. How did they make
decisions together? How were ideas shared and what type of coaching was apparent? Is this indicative of work relationships?
What reminders regarding project team best practices can they employ upon returning to the workplace? (approximately
10 minutes)
