Lent is a season of prayer, fasting and alms giving. All adults between the ages of 18 and 59 are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Fri-day. The Fridays of Lent all are re-quired to abstain from meat.

The Stations of the Cross are prayed every Friday at Noon. Confession @ 3:00 PM Satur-day. Make a good confession during Lent. Ex-tended hours for confession on Friday, March 23rd And Saturday, March 24th.

The first formal part of the Eucharistic prayer at the Mass is the penitential rite. “Lord have mer-cy.” The acknowledgment of sin is the condition for entry into the covenant of the Eucharist. The admission of sin is a constant theme of every Mass. In the Our Father, we pray that God “forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us.” Whether we forgive or not, the presumption that we are sinners is painfully evi-dent. The celebrant asks God, “Look not upon our sins, but on the faith of your church.” It is a sinful church that chants: “You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.” The acknowledgement of our sin is not an embar-rassing hindrance to God’s presence. It is the prompting of God’s law, Jeremiah reminds us, written in our hearts. It is the condition of the new covenant. It is the reason for Jesus’ covenant. “This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven.” The Eucharist Prayer is incomprehensible if we think we are sinless. It is the re-enactment of Christ’s sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. Our admission of sin is the occasion for singing the glories of God. It is the appreciation of how hap-py we are to be called to the supper. It is the ac-ceptance of the new covenant, Christ’s passion and death embodied in our Eucharist. It is impos-sible to enter the presence of God, blameless and spotless. The only contribution we make to this covenant is the acknowledgement of our sin and trust that it is healed by the redemptive power of God’s love. The words: “I will remember their sin no more” (Jer31:34) are not very liberating or ex-citing if people think they have no sins to remember. - John Kavanaugh, SJ
