Simplify multi-vendor storage network infrastructure management

The EMC ControlCenter family of storage management software enables you to simplify

and automate the management of your multi-vendor networked storage environment

through a single, consistent information-centric approach. EMC SAN Manager, an

integral part of the ControlCenter family, masks the complexity of managing storage area

networks and enablesyou to take control of your networked storage infrastructure through

one intuitive interface. SAN Manager is a comprehensive storage area network (SAN)

management tool that provides a central point of access and control for multi-vendorservers, storage networks, and storage arrays. It helps reduce operational costs by

streamlining management of SANs and dramatically increase the security and cost

effectivenessof your investmentsin technology and personnel.

EMC SAN Manager simplifies management of SANs

SAN Manager provides a single interface to discover, monitor, and manage complex

heterogeneous SAN environments. It centralizes and streamlines SAN management

tasks across multi-vendor storage networks that include switches and directors, such as

EMC Connectrix, Brocade, McDATA, INRANGE, and QLogic; and multi-vendor storage

arrays including EMC CLARiiON, EMC Symmetrix, HP StorageWorks, and HDS. It lets

you define which host can seewhat storage by offering complete end-to-end pathmanagement. SAN Manager integrates SAN management seamlessly into other storage

management applications by providing a single point of control for your SAN. And SAN

Manager simplifies and lowers storage administration costs by managing more storage

with the same or fewer resources.

Integration with EMC ControlCenter for multi-vendor openness

SAN Manager is integrated with and leverages ControlCenter's common infrastructure to

achieve significant open management benefits. It provides a local or remote single point of

control to centralize end-to-end SAN management and automatically discovers and views

the entire SAN topology. San Manager is also tightly integrated with frameworks, such as

HP OpenView, HP ITO, Tivoli NetView, CA-Unicenter, and Micromuse to protect existinginvestments. And SAN Manager leverages the security features of ControlCenter to control

who can perform or view SAN configuration functions.

Discovery and topology to see across your SAN

SAN Manager automatically discovers, maps, and displaysthe entire SAN topologyat either

a high level or in detail and correlates all of the SAN elements in context. Specific physical

and logical information about each object in the topology can be displayed. Administrators

can view physical devices such as Host Bus Adapters (HBAs), Fibre Channel switches (EMC

Connectrix, Brocade, McDATA, INRANGE, QLogic); and storage arrays including Symmetrix,

CLARiiON, HP StorageWorks, and HDS. Logical information, such as zoning and LUN

masking definitions, is also easily viewed.

SAN Manager provides open integration and heterogeneous support

SAN administrators can now manage their heterogeneous environments with a single SAN

management tool. SAN Manager provides a common user interface for partitioning fabrics

into logical zones and managing storage device masking. It also has the unique capability

of supporting multi-vendor Fibre Channel switches, such as Brocade and McDATA, within

the same fabric through an open fabric mode.

Centralized zoning for improved access control, performance,

and availabilityWith SAN Managers zoning capabilities, storage administrators can create and managesets of logical devices within a zone. A zone consists of selected devices such as host

    The ControlCenter family is a

    key part of EMCs Automated

    Information Storage (AutoIS)

    strategy. AutoIS makes the

    complicated simple. It allows

    you to consolidate information,

    integrate your heterogeneous

    information infrastructure, and

    manage your storage environ-

    ment with a single software

    solution.

bus adapters (HBAs), switches, Fibre Channel ports, and storage devices in the fabric.Devices assigned to one zone can communicate with other devices in the same zone, butnot with devices in zones to which they do not belong. This allows administrators torestrict access to shared storage network resources and provide higher levels of accesscontrol, performance, and availability.

Zoning creates logical device subsets within a SAN for resource allocation and additionalaccess control. This common interface for zoning across multiple heterogeneous switches

eliminates the need to perform different command sets using the specific vendor-designedapplication. SAN Manager utilizes the ControlCenter Repositoryand stores all SAN-relatedinformation there, including zoning. SAN Manager supports both WWN and port zoning forConnectrix, Brocade, McDATA, INRANGE, and QLogic switches. A command line interface isalso available for performing zoning and LUN masking tasks.

Centralized LUN maskinganother important control capability

By working across all fibre-attached platforms and a broad spectrum of storage networkdevices, SAN Manager unifies LUN masking from one central console, reducingmanagement overhead and increasing control. It provides secure, shared or selectiveaccess to designated Symmetrix, CLARiiON, and HP StorageWorks data volumes. Thisfunctionality shields important information from unauthorized access. Additionally, SANManager further extends centralized SAN management by supporting discovery, monitoring, and zoning of HDS arrays and their LUN definitions

    Simplifies path management

SAN Managers AutoPathing wizard enables administrators to perform both LUN maskingand centralized zoning in a single set of operations to streamline management tasks. Thestorage administrator can manage individual paths and associations of hostswith storagedevices (volumes) on the Symmetrix, CLARiiON, and HP StorageWorks arrays. SAN Managerdisplaysall pathsfrom the selected hosts and volumes.

SAN performance monitoring helps maintain information accessibilityPerformance management is another key aspect of SAN management. In complex SANenvironments, performance issues can occur at the host, fabric, or storage level. SANManager contains numerous alerts that monitor storage resources, including hosts, switches, and storage arrays. These alerts can monitor errors, performance, health, availability, and other conditions. Management policies can also be created for individualalerts. Visual indicators are displayed with objects in the Topology view and Tree Panel tonotifyuserswhen an alerthas been generated.

The Console provides numerous realtime graphical views for identifying bottlenecks andanalyzing throughput. Users can also set performance thresholds that generate alertswhen performance levels fall above or below desired levels.

Policy- and event-based management enable automated operation,SLA attainment

Policy-based management allows organizations to better achieve their service levelagreements (SLAs). The resulting policies drive consistent planning, automation, andenforcementactivities. Enforcement rules trackSLAs and define corrective actions. Failurescan include anything from not meeting availability and performance objectives, tounauthorized SAN security configuration changes. The ability to offer policy-basedmanagement is fundamental to providing simple solutions to managing complex SANenvironments and reducing total cost of ownership (TCO).

Managing events is another critical aspect of policy-based management and automation.

SAN Manager continuously monitors the SAN environment for errorsand changes. When anevent occurs, SAN Manager can notify the user in multiple ways (i.e., SNMP, pager, e-mail,

event log, etc.). Users may also define and associate actions to specific events to automate

    the detection and response process.

    SAN Manager support

SAN Manager supports a multi-vendor networked storage infrastructure.

EMC SAN Manager is just the beginningSAN Manager works together with other ControlCenter applications to provide an end-to-

end solution for storage resource, network, and device management. As your needs change

and grow, the ControlCenter family of storage management applications grows with you.

ControlCenter applications utilize a shared infrastructure, so each ControlCenter

application builds on the previous one, increasing the value of your investment in

technology, people, and processes. All with a single, integrated user interface. All with the

most powerful set of management capabilities anywhere.
