REGIONAL WINES Taste wines from mountain terrains and cooled by ocean breezes in one of California’s oldest wine regions
There are over 200 vintners that make up the Santa Cruz Mountain wine appellation with roots that date back to the 1800s. The region spans from Mt. Madonna in the south to Half Moon Bay in the north. The mountain terrain, marine influences and varied micro-climates create the finest conditions for growing grapes that produce Cabernet, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.
Meet and chat with the wine makers of many family owned vineyards. For more information on tours, tastings, and special events visit, Santa Cruz Mountain Wineries (scmwa.com) or the wineries of Santa Clara Valley (santaclarawines.com).

WEATHER
REGIONAL DISCOVERY DAY TRIPS San Jose is a perfect home base for exploring the wealth of experiences available throughout Northern and Central California.
FAMILY FUN
Santa Cruz and Monterey
Head to the coast with a quick drive on Highway 17 into Santa Cruz, or catch the train at Roaring Camp Railroad and enjoy a day of fun in the sun as the 1880’s locomotive travels through magnificent redwood groves en route to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Catch a ride on the Giant Dipper, a classic wooden roller coaster, and don’t forget a swimsuit for a dip in the ocean.
Venture farther down to coast on Highway 1 and visit Monterey to experience life underwater at the Monterey Bay Aquarium with up-close views of jellyfish, sea otters, penguins, sharks and other creatures of the deep. Afterwards stroll through Cannery Row for classic dining options and charming boutique shops.
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
Natures Playground
Adrenaline junkies and outdoor enthusiasts will love the abundance of activities in Northern California’s backyard.
Take a surfing safari in Santa Cruz and “hang ten” while riding the waves. Arrange for lessons at Cowell’s Beach Surf Shop, near the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, or skip the lesson and paddle out to local surf spots like The Hook, Steamers Lane and Pleasure Point for the area’s best waves.
Further inland, soar through the canopies atop towering redwood trees on an exhilarating zip line at Mount Hermon Adventures, or stay grounded with a hike through miles of pristine trails in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Wilder Ranch State Park and The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.
HIPSTER URBANITE
San Francisco
Hop on the train and head north to San Francisco for a day of fashion, food and art. Jump start the morning with coffee at Blue Bottle Coffee in the Ferry Building and continue along the Embarcadero for magnificent views, active parks and trendy shops. Bring a camera for photo-ops among the colorful streets of Chinatown, power shop through Union Square, or head to North Beach (SF’s Little Italy) to relive the beatnik era.
No visit to “The City” is complete without a cable car ride to Fishermen’s Wharf for fresh seafood and fun tourist attractions; and while the Flower Power movement has faded, Haight-Ashbury, the counter-culture capital of the world, remains an iconic place to visit.
GRAPES GALORE
Santa Clara Valley, Tri-Valley, Napa Valley
Northern California’s vast wine region offers sips at every stop. Discover nearby vineyards in the Santa Clara Valley, Tri-Valley and Napa Valley.
South of San Jose on Highway 101, find over 20 tasting rooms and vineyards in California’s first premium wine production region scattered throughout the towns of Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill. Take a 45 minute drive Northeast off Highway 580 and 680 for a trip to over 50 wineries in the Livermore Tri-Valley wine country, where nearly 80% of California Chardonnay vines trace their genetic roots. And well worth the hour and a half drive, Napa Valley is home to over 450 wineries specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Zinfandel.
