Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and

everything is ready; come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed

them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. The king said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

Today’s parable of the banquet from Matthew’s gospel is a companion to last week’s parable of the vineyard. Both are addressed to the ‘chief priests and elders of the people’ with whom Jesus seems to take issue and who, as leaders, bore a great responsibility for recognizing God’s initiatives and grace among them. In both parables there is an inability of the characters to respond to what God is doing in their midst. In both parables there are warnings that if they will not respond to the invitation to accept God’s new work, others will respond – while they themselves will miss out on participating in God’s unfolding plan. Today’s images are vivid: in Isaiah’s stunningly beautiful text, God promises to ‘destroy death forever…to wipe away the tears from every face’ from the peoples of all nations. It is a universal vision of healing and of restoration of paradise, vividly symbolized by the ‘great feast on the mountain of the LORD’. The 23rd psalm evokes the image of the shepherd graciously preparing a rich banquet for his flock. And Paul knows from his own experience that God is able to ‘supply for every need’. Who can turn down such a gracious invitation! Jesus’ parable points out that our reasons for not r responding to God’s grace are simply excuses: we don’t recognize how valuable the banquet we are called to really is, with how much care and love it has been prepared, and how much it would satisfy and fill us with abounding joy. Even when we do respond we need to truly value the fact that we have been so freely invited and recognize the ultimate value of the gift, which has been given to us with such generous love. Like the one who did respond but arrived improperly clothed, because he did not think much of the grandeur of what he was called t o, every person who responds to God’s grace must do so with true gratitude of heart and valuing the gift received. Like Isaiah we are called to hope for and rejoice in what God will accomplish; like the psalmist we are to confidently trust in the abundant care and generosity of God the Shepherd; like Paul we are to depend on God’s providence in the most difficult situations; and like the guests of Jesus’ parable we are to respond wholeheartedly to God’s banquet of grace that comes to us in person…Jesus. No reason or excuse should deter us from responding with daring faith, hope and love.

En aquel tiempo, de nuevo tomó Jesús la palabra y habló en parábolas a los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos del pueblo: “El reino de los cielos se parece a un rey que celebraba la boda de su hijo. Mandó criados para que avisaran a los convida-dos a la boda, p ero no quisieron ir. Volvió a mandar criados, encargándoles que les dijeran: “Tengo preparado el

banquete, he matado terneros y reses cebadas, y todo está a punto. Venid a la boda. “Los convidados no hicieron caso; uno se marchó a sus tierras, otro a sus negocios; los demás les echaron mano a los criados y los maltrataron hasta matarlos. El rey montó en cólera, envió sus tropas, que acabaron con aquellos asesinos y prendieron fuego a la ciudad. Luego dijo a sus criados: “La boda está preparada, pero los convidados no se la merecían. Id ahora a los cruces de los caminos, y a todos los

que encontréis, convidadlos a la boda.” Los criados salieron a los caminos y reunieron a todos los que encontraron, malos y buenos. La sala del banquete se llenó de comensales. Cuando el rey entró a saludar a los c omensales, reparó en uno que no llevaba traje de fiesta y le dijo: “Amigo, ¿cómo has entrado aquí sin vestirte de fiesta?” El otro no abrió la boca. Entonces el rey dijo a los camareros:“Atadlo de pies y manos y arrojadlo fuera, a las tinieblas. Allí será el llanto y el rechinar de dientes.” Porque muchos son los llamados y pocos los escojidos. La lectura de hoy nos presenta dos ideas importantes: • Solamente Dios trae la plenitud de la sanación a las naciones y trae a fruición la salvación de toda creación. En Jesús, la salvación de que viene de Dios es realizada. • Todos somos invitados al reino, pero no todos respondemos. Pero hemos de responder por las razones correctas y hemos de hacerlo con gran gratitud por lo que Dios ha obrado en nuestras vidas.

Evangelio de la Semana Mateo 22:1-14

La parábola del banquete, tomada del evangelio de Mateo, es la acompañante de la parábola de la vid que escuchamos el domingo pasado. Ambas son dirigidas ‘los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos del pueblo’ con quien Jesús no esta de acuerdo y que, como lid eres, cargaban gran responsabilidad en reconocer las iniciativas de Dios y de su gracia entre ellos. En ambas parábolas hay una inhabilidad de los personajes de responder a lo que Dios estaba obrando ellos. En ambas parábolas hay advertencias de que si n o responden a la invitación de Dios aceptando la nueva obra de Dios, otros responderán – mientras que ellos mismos se quedaran sin participar en el plan de divino que se desarrolla. Las imagines son vividas: en el texto increíble bello de Isaías, Dios prometa ‘destruir la muerte para siempre…secar las lagrimas de toda cara’ de los pueblos de toda nación. Es una visión universal de sanación y de la restauración del paraíso, vívidamente simbolizada por la ‘gran fiesta en el monte del Señor’. El salmo 23 evoca la imagen del pastor que generosamente prepara un rico banquete para su rebaño. Y Pablo sabe por su propia experiencia de que Dios es capaz de “proveer a todas vuestras necesidades con magnificencia, conforme a su espléndida riqueza en Cristo Jesús.” ¡Quien puede rechazar tan generosa invitación! La parábola de Jesús indica de que nuestras razones por no responder a la gracia de Dios son mayormente escusas: no reconocemos el valor del banquete al que som os llamados, que con tanto afán y amor se nos prepara, y de que tal manera nos satisfará y colmara de gozo abundante. Y aun cuando respondemos necesitamos de verdaderamente valorar el hecho de que hemos sido tan libremente invitados, y reconocer el gran va lor del don que se nos ha dado con tan generoso amor. Como el que respondió pero llego vestido inapropiadamente, porque no pensó mucho de la grandeza a la cual fue llamado, cada persona que responde a la gracia de Dios debe de hacerlo con sincera gratitud de cora zón y valorando el don recibido. Como Isaías somos llamados a poner nuestra esperanza y a regocijarnos por lo que Dios cumplirá; como el salmista hemos de poner confiadamente nuestra confianza en el cuidado abundante y generoso de Dios el Pastor; como Pablo hemo s de depender en la providencia divina en las situaciones mas difíciles; y como los invitados de la parábola de Jesús hemos de responder de corazón al banquete de gracia divina que nos viene en persona…en Jesús. Ninguna razón o escusa debe impedirnos a responder con audaz fe, esperanza y amor.
