Nce upoN A tIMe, there was a quaint little neighborhood built into the

hills of a larger city. In an era of commuting and big box shopping, this neighborhood

decided to go back to a simpler time – a time where people knew their neighbors,

where people waved at each other when they passed by, where people kept an eye out

for each other, and rallied together when something important threatened their sense

of community.

It was the kind of place where neighbors called each other to borrow a cup of sugar or a ladder. They

talked to each other over the back fence or while the kids played out in the cul de sac. With wider sidewalks

and a central town square, this neighborhood was designed to bring people together, to make walking to

school or the store a social activity and to bring back the ideal of small town living.

Some people laughed at the little neighborhood. They thought the people were too idealistic. They didn’t

think that this simple life could really exist in a time of high-speed, high-tech living. They didn’t believe that

people would really take the time to meet and care about their neighbors. But, they were wrong.

You see, this little neighborhood was filled with a wide variety of skills and services. When someone

needed to paint their house, they called their neighbors for recommendations. They tried to give the business

to a neighbor first. This kept more of their money right in the community and by working together, they got

to know each other better. Neighbors even traveled and spent holidays together.

When someone needed to buy a gift, they would walk over to the town square and buy a gift certifi-

cate, which helped bring new business to the shop owners. As the shop owners did well, they gave back to

the community schools and programs. The shop owners and people living in the neighborhood were always

looking for ways to support their community. As new people moved in, they were welcomed and quickly

integrated into this local culture.

When people passed through this little neighborhood, they were amazed to see the prosperity. Even dur-

ing tough times, home values were high, the schools were excelling and the shops were always busy. People

walked throughout the community and waved as people passed by. Neighbors met at the local eateries just to

hang out and enjoy life. People seemed happier. And, they were.

The little neighborhood thrived and brought small town living back to life. It wasn’t long before other

communities came to visit and learn how they could bring these small town values back to their own neigh-

borhoods. Before long, this simple way of living became much more common. People began to realize that

neighbors can be like family and that a healthy community means a healthy lifestyle for everyone.

And, everyone lived happily ever after.

If you think Postal Annex is a place

to ship or mail something – you’re

missing out on a lot of the amazing

conveniences you’ll find inside these

four walls. The San Elijo Hills location

is more of a ‘general store’ than a post

office. When you walk in, perhaps the

biggest surprise is the wide selection

of gifts. When you need a last minute

gift, Postal Annex is a great place to

not only pick it up, but ship it out.

Gifts for children or a friend at the

office, a box of See’s Candies - you’ll

be surprised by all of the seasonal gifts

you’ll find. They can even keep your

mailing list there so that the next time

you need to mail something, they’ll

have the address on hand and save you some time. Forgot to send some-

thing to your Aunt Gertrude for her birthday? Call them up and they’ll pull

her address from your Christmas card list and ship her something now!

A Colorful Universe is exactly that –

a universe of color. It’s also a universe

of ideas. You may only think of them

as a place to paint figurines with your

children, but that is only the begin-

ning. What about getting together

‘after-hours’ with some of your own

friends for a little creative expres-

sion? What a fun night out! Bring a

bottle of wine, gather with friends,

and get creative together! Imagine

making your own ceramic or glass

candle stick. You’ll also find a variety

of fun ceramic household items from

spoon rests to coasters, plates and

vases. There really is no limit. Adina

and Haley, sisters and owners of the

shop, are full of ideas. If you don’t consider yourself the ‘creative type’ or are

scared of a paintbrush, then this is the place to watch your fears melt away.

Kady Smith from Cedar Crossing is a Postal Annex customer...When I needed passport photos for my visa application for my school trip to China this spring, it was pretty cool that my mom and I could just stop in Postal Annex on my way home from school, without any kind of appointment, and get my photos taken and printed. (They even let me look at it before we printed it to make sure I liked it.) Mom and I had so much extra time, we stopped at both Hendo’s and Yogurt Utopia before heading home.

You think you’ve seen one dry

cleaner, you’ve seen them all, right?

That’s because you haven’t stopped

into our nieghborhood dry cleaners.

Windmill Cleaners has a long his-

tory in the business of dry cleaning.

They don’t cut corners and you can

count on them for quality. Wind-

mill has its own on-site cleaning

facility at their location on Melrose

just down the road. They use fresh

solvents, unlike many competitors

who re-use solvents over and over.

And, if quality isn’t reason enough,

convenience tops the list. It’s so easy

to walk over to the town square or to stop by on your way home from work.

Did you know they also offer alterations? They can hem up or take in your

pants. Maybe you need a new zipper? Or just some minor sewing? Run

down there and get it done!

Michael huff from Sagewood is a Windmill Cleaners customer...

I’ve been a Windmill Cleaners customer for a quite a while – from their Carlsbad location to the new one on Melrose, and now, right here in San Elijo Hills. I’ve always enjoyed their quality and service, but having the location right here in the neighborhood is so convenient! They are always friendly and accom-modating. One time, when I needed something cleaned quickly, they were happy to accommo-date my request and get that item done early. It’s just nice to have a dry cleaning service that you can rely on so close to home.
