Andy Rae is a furniture designer, craftsman, teacher, and author of two videos and countless articles for various publications, including American Woodworker and Fine Woodworking magazines. From the President… The Design In Wood show is over and was another great success. Thanks to all of you who volunteered. It

takes a great deal of time and effort to put on this event and everyone’s hard work contribute to make it the premier show of fine woodworking in the country. The reputation of our show continues to grow. The magazine editors and publishers who visit and sponsor our special awards are spreading the news. They all tell me that it is the finest event of its kind in the country. I have received several inquiries from other woodworking groups asking how we manage to do it. My answer is always the same. We have a dedicated group of volunteers who take pride in their work and are proud of the results. For those of you who did not volunteer this year, we really need your help. Besides missing out on some quality time enjoying the work on display, you are missing an opportunity to be part of the fun. Spending some time walking the floor and looking at the fine work on display not only helps but is also inspiring and provides motivation for that next project. Thanks also to those who volunteer for the demonstrations on turning, model making, carving, scrollsawing and the 19th Century Chair shop. We may have the most fun, as there is always a crowd, and a chance to interact with many fine people who visit the show. We have even developed some “groupies” over the years. They return each year and tell us that the Design In Wood show is the highlight of their visit. The show is the best forum we have for meeting our association’s stated objectives of the education, promotion, and public appreciation of the principles and practices of fine woodworking. The board is already at work on next year’s show and is considering some ideas to make your volunteering efforts even more enjoyable next year.

With DIW behind us, our next big event is the fall seminar. This year we have well known woodworker, teacher and author, Andy Rae, giving a demonstration and lecture on cabinetmaking, which will follow his book, Furniture and Cabinet Construction. See the announcement in this issue and be prepared to reserve your place at this month’s meeting.

We also plan to have our Palomar scholarship winners at this month’s meeting to show their winning pieces and tell us about their work.

Also, don’t forget to pick up a chair to finish for the children. We received a lot of requests for those chairs again this year.

Finally our own Del Cover will lead a presentation on some of his work over the years with famous artist and designer, Niki de St. Phalle.

This should be a fun filled evening so don’t miss it. See you at the meeting. Ed Gladney, President

July Raffle

Seven Really Great Prizes this Meeting I am often asked by members if I know where to buy something like finishing supplies or tools or locate a service like sharpening or packing and shipping. Sometimes it’s someone who has been a member for many years. I’m always surprised at the question because invariably that product or service is available from one or more of our Association resources, listed in every newsletter. I urge you to read the entire list from time to time, and to use these businesses every time you can. Our Association has a lot of purchasing power and clout, but we need to use it to keep and attract worthwhile sponsors. Helping this month were some companies we can always count on: Tool Depot, Bill Kohr’s Craftsman Studios and the Rockler Woodworkers Store. 1. 18 Piece Router Bit Set The most useful ones, in a handy wooden case 2. Makita 9.6V Drill and Flashlight Two great tools in the same box 3. Lie-Nielsen Blockplane One of Lie-Nielsen’s most popular items 4. Porter Cable 693 Plunge and Standard Router Chosen quickly at every raffle 5. Dremel Professional Rotary Tool with loaded accessory kit Fun and Useful 6. Delta 16” Scrollsaw Fun for you and/or your spouse and kids or grandkids 7. A Bucket of Good stuff… Tools, wood, and who knows what-all? Tickets go on sale at 6:30. Buy a few extra tickets and get a great surprise bonus!

SDFWA Mailing List We currently have 145 members subscribed to our mailing list and the numbers are growing. In case you haven’t heard, this is the email mailing list where we provide last minute information and reminders. We try to plan events well in advance and notify everyone via the newsletter and web site. Unfortunately sometimes Murphy intervenes and it is necessary to make a last minute change to a location, time or date. Subscribing to the list will ensure you have the greatest possible notice about these changes. This is not a chat room or anything like that and we don’t give out your email address to anyone else. Occasionally we send an email when we have something important to share with the membership. You can join from our website at this address: http://www.sdfwa.org/memberapp.htm just enter your email address in the box and click the “join” button. See you on the list. Design in Wood Exhibition

Our 22nd annual Design in Wood Exhibition is back in the box. It was one of the most successful and extremely interesting exhibits we have had. Entries came from all over the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Visitors came from all over the United States and Europe to see our exhibit. The total number of visitors to the Fair was 1.2 million in 21 days and from the great crowds we had in the exhibit, most were able to appreciate Design in Wood. Many people in fact tell us year after year that they come to the Fair just to see Design in Wood. Undoubtedly the best wood working display anywhere. A great big thank you to all who helped make this years exhibition so successful- all the volunteers who helped with setup and takedown, floor walkers, shop workers, and especially the staff who worked so hard to keep everything running smoothly. Finally I want to thank the spouses of the staff for their support. Without all this help, Design in Wood would not happen. Bob Stevenson, Chairman, Shows & Exhibits _____________________________________________________________________________________

The following is excerpted from the San Diego Public Library Newsletter

In February, Ed Gladney, President of the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association presented San Diego Public Library with the organization’s 11th consecutive contribution of $1000. This gift is matched 100% by the City of San Diego with 50% of the matching funds used to purchase materials for branches and 50% added to the original gift for Central Library. This has enabled Central Library to purchase $1,500 worth of woodworking texts, videos and reference materials each year for 11 years, building an impressive collection of 20 reference books, 966 circulating books and 67 videocassettes, 10 of which are Spanish language videos. Each book has a bookplate inside the front cover which recognizes the organization. This is an excellent example of the kind of partnership between the Library and the community which helps to grow unique collections matching the interests of the public with materials they want and need. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________
