Financial Support for the San Diego Art Institute (OSP 2008) is provided in part by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, QUALCOMM, and the Chris and Lorraine Wolfe Fund.

Dear Members,

During this past year we have experi-enced the bad state of the economy, seen the quality and diversity of art increase, lost some fellow artists, pa-trons, family and friends, and, converse-ly, gained some fellow artists, patrons, family and friends.

This cycle brings to mind what we are achieving and leaving behind for the next group of artists and patrons. This is what our strategy for the future is and our vision beyond tomorrow.

We have grown and struggled but for the most part we have played out the growth strategies as laid out since 1997.

We have been true to course and have excelled in our youth program. We have reestablished educational classes as well as the quality & diversity of artists and artworks, not to mention promoting the understanding of the value of art be-yond the aesthetics. We have, however, not done as well as we had hoped in getting our Friends of the Institute and MOLA into a larger and more defined group.

So, as we pass over the old year and ven-ture into 2009, we mourn our losses, we celebrate our victories and milestones

In response to the letter from Tim Field, President & CEO/SDAI

What it means to me to be a member of the San Diego Art Institute, this is a place where I have met so many artists, so many collectors and friends, dedicated people, I hold dear memories of this organization where art is shared. I learned a little history of San Diego when climbing the old stairs to the attic of the SDAI, there I found the effort that many past members gave to the Institute. I worked hard to find myself in my work to compete and express myself truly. I found and lost dear friends artists, I learned to work with others to keep the Institute in the park, the home of many artists. I am proud and glad to be part of the SDAI. Couldn’t think of Balboa Park without the San Diego Art Institute and I couldn’t think of San Diego without SDAI. I want to thank Tim, Kerstin and Marc and all the visible and invisible supporters. I love all of you and give you a ten to save me from quitting.Ciao!Anna Z. Jenkins

and we must reaffirm a focus on do-nor development and membership development. These two areas grow or we run the very distinct possi-bility of succumbing to the current economic woes.

Please look to yourself and those around you to see if there is an op-portunity for you to support this organization that 365 days a year promotes you, the artist, educates to the value of the arts, and exposes the public to the visual arts within the context of the living artist.

We are one of, if not the only, orga-nization poised to make significant progress in establishing an artist community and an increase in sup-port to the local artist community.

We have had many milestones this year, including our 50th Interna-tional awards Exhibition, our 10th Ginger Award and our 65th year as a non-profit arts organization.

Congratulations to all for reestab-lishing SDAI in the community. There is much to be proud of, yet this year is the pivotal one. Please be involved and help us to secure our future.

I lost my father this year. He was the source of my tenacity when presented with “ can’t be done scenario.” This is what I brought in 1996 when I became involved with SDAI. I would like to finish this promise and dedicate this year to my father, a son of an immigrant who followed and achieved the American dream along with siring 8 children. It is my hope that SDAI will acquire real property in addi-tion to the Balboa Park site and take charge of our destiny to be a major organization for the arts at personal and community levels.
