There are many reasons San Diego is consistently rated one of the top vacation destinations in North America, but probably none are more significant than our optimistic spirit. With 70 miles of breath-taking beaches and friendly locals, San Diego’s laid-back, positive outlook is contagious.

Far from being just a beach town, San Diego offers a range of opportunities that appeal to all ages, interests and budgets. A host of major events include PGA tours, restaurant and craft beer weeks, Broadway-bound hits, thoroughbred racing and more. Our vibrant neighborhoods like uptown’s North Park and downtown’s walkable Gaslamp Quarter feature lively dining, music and nightlife scenes.

California’s fascinating history is brought to life in Old Town San Diego’s shops, restaurants and historic sites, and at Cabrillo National Monument, where California was first discovered in 1542. San Diego boasts a collection of world-class attractions, including SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and San Di-ego Zoo Safari Park, LEGOLAND Resort California and the USS Midway Museum, to name a few. Balboa Park, the nation’s largest urban cultural park, is home to 17 museums and The Old Globe theater. Mission Bay Aquatic Park, with 27 miles of sandy beach shorelines, beckons water sports enthusiasts of every kind with kayaking on the bay to surfing the crashing waves. You can also take a short drive to San Diego’s East County to enjoy casino gaming and beautiful mountain and desert landscapes.

Whether you are looking for a place to relax, energize, be entertained or reconnect with family and friends, San Diego offers the perfect setting.

We hope you will visit us soon!

Transportation in San Diego

FROM THE AIRPORT

GETTING AROUND TOWN

TOURS

AMTRAK

The San Diego International Airport is a 10-minute ride from

downtown. Take a cab for about $15 or hop on the San Diego Municipal Transit System’s “Airport Flyer” (Route 992) for $2.25 (children ages fi ve and under ride free).

The San Diego Trolley light rail system has routes to various points of inter-

est around San Diego County, including Fashion Valley Mall, Qualcomm Stadium, downtown and the U.S./Mexico border. It operates seven days a week from 5 a.m. to midnight and runs every 15 minutes.

MTS (San Diego Metropolitan Transit System) buses are a quick way to navi-

gate the metro area. The fare is $2.25 each way, but for $5/$7, you can buy a day pass and get unlimited bus and trolley rides.

Pedicabs are available daily along most downtown streets, particularly

in the Gaslamp Quarter and along the Embarcadero.

San Diego recently welcomed DecoBike, the bike-sharing program with approximately 180 stations around town.

Riders can pick up or drop off a bike 24/7.

Go to sdmts.com to see the full schedule of the San Diego Trolley.

The 15-minute ferry to Coronado departs from two locations: Broadway

Pier and behind the Convention Center. Tickets are $4.25 each way.

Car2Go operates a fleet of blue-and-white Smart Cars that you can rent by the

minute, the hour or the day. A one-time membership fee of $35 is required; after that, the cost is just 38 cents plus tax per minute. (Plus, street parking is free, even at a city meter.)

Old Town Trolley Tours offers a guided tour with on-and-off privileges through Balboa

Park, downtown and Coronado. The entertaining trolley drivers are brimming with historical facts and trivia. Group reservations are also available.

GoCar Tours, San Diego’s fl eet of three-wheeled mini-cars, is based in Little Italy. Enjoy a

GPS-guided audio tour highlighting 100 San Diego sites.

Balboa Park has a free tram that provides access to the park’s museums and attractions. Park in the Inspiration Point lot

and board at Tram Central.

Another Side of San Diego Tours and Wheel Fun Rentals offer Segway tours. You’ll see major landmarks and

points of interest while having way more fun than you ever would on foot.

Head up to Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad or Oceanside on the Coaster from downtown, or travel

east to west in North County on the Sprinter.

Amtrak’s Pacifi c Surfl iner makes it easy to arrange a two-destination vacation. The train runs down the

California coast, serving key locations like Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Anaheim, and makes two stops in San Diego.

Wheel Fun Rentals

Need a private car or limousine? Men in Black Transportation will

deliver you to your destination in style, whether it’s a trip to the airport or wine tasting in Temecula.

ROB MACHADO

SURF San Diego has a very unique vibe about it, especially North County. I grew up surf-ing a wave called Swami’s, named for the Self-Realization Fellowship on the cliff there. Swami’s is one of the best waves in San Diego, which draws all of the best surfers in the area when it’s good. I also love surfi ng in what I refer to as the bub-ble around my house—Swami’s, Cardiff, Seaside, Pipes, etc. The majority of the waves are reef breaks, and are really good in the winter time.

Rob Machado is a SDTA Ambassador and your Guide to the Good Stuff.

IDEAL SAN DIEGO DAYWake up with the sun, take my dog down to the beach for a walk and a surf check. Paddle out and ride some waves. Head to the Sambazon Acai Cafe for some grub, then back home for some work (boring). I’ll work on some surfboards depending on where I might be heading off to on my next trip, then it’s back to the beach for an afternoon surf, followed by dinner at Rimel’s with my girl and maybe live music at the Belly Up in Solana Beach or Spreckels Theatre downtown.

At low tide, explore tide pools in front of the Hotel del Coronado, and be sure to wander into the quaint village to check out shops and grab a bite to eat.

DOG BEACH, DEL MARAcross the street from the famous Del Mar racetrack, where the San Dieguito River greets the sea, or as they say, the “turf meets the surf,” this broad wedge of beach has lots of room for volleyball games, and a giant gathering place for furry friends to romp and swim.

TORREY PINES STATE BEACHLocated at the bottom of the 300-foot cliffs of white and golden stone, this picturesque beach is a prime location for relaxing by the sea or an invigorating morning hike in Torrey Pines State Reserve. MISSION BEACHThis stretch of beach represents the vibrant SoCal scene. Golf For good reason, Golf Digest named San Diego one of the top 50 golf destinations in the world. We’ve got 93 beautiful public and private courses, endless blue sky and more than 300 sunny days each year. Our emerald fairways are surrounded by rolling hills, ocean views, desert landscapes, blooming fl ora and sweeping mountain vistas, making San Diego a golfer’s paradise.

FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN: FEBRUARY 5-8, 2015Each winter since 1952, top golfers have headed to San Diego to kick off the PGA Tour at an event known as the “West Coast Swing.” Since 1968, the tournament has been set at the spectacular Torrey Pines Golf Course, named for the rare gnarled tree found on the cliffs of La Jolla’s rugged coast. This high-stakes golf event, now deemed the Farmers Insurance Open, comes with major bragging rights and a cash prize of more than $1 million for the fi rst-place winner. The tournament takes place on both of Torrey Pines’ 18-hole, championship golf courses, which are known for their stunning ocean and canyon views, and coastal bluff setting.

CULINARY SCENE

Top Chefs in San DiegoMeet 12 of San Diego’s top culinary talents, from fine dining chefs to those who

specialize in highly approachable comfort cuisine.

AMANDA BAUMGARTENThis Top Chef Season 7 alum is the architect of the menu at Waypoint Public in North Park, a neighbor-hood eatery with a surf ’n’ turf menu featuring every-thing from charred Span-ish octopus to oyster tacos. Each dish has a suggested beer pairing poured from one of 30 taps.

RICHARD BLAISTop Chef All-Stars Season 8 winner Chef Richard Blais has made his mark in Little Italy with Juniper & Ivy. A trifecta of strik-ing design, spirited scene and inventive cuisine have made this one of the city’s most popular eateries and bar scenes.

WILLIAM BRADLEYThis three-time James Beard Award-nominated chef heads Addison, the signature restaurant at The Grand Del Mar, Southern California’s only Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond restaurant, where artisanal cuisine is comple-mented by a world-class wine program.

TREY FOSHEE Trey Foshee presides over three concepts housed in the same location: George’s California Mod-ern, George’s Ocean Ter-race and George’s Bar, all of which serve up excep-tional California seasonal fare alongside stellar views of the La Jolla Cove. Try his TBL3, a nine-to-12-course feast for the ulti-mate foodie experience.

MATT GORDONElegantly presented comfort food like wood-roasted bone marrow, skillet corn bread and “duckaroni” reign supreme at Matt Gordon’s three San Diego restaurants, Urban Solace (North Park), Sea & Smoke (Del Mar) and Solace & the Moon-light Lounge (Encinitas).

KARRIE HILLSThis California Culinary Academy grad honed her craft in California’s wine country before making the move to San Diego. Hills oversees two restau-rants that share the same kitchen: The Red Door, a farm-to-table spot, and The Wellington, a sultry steak and martini lounge, both in Mission Hills.

WHERE THE CHEFS EAT

Amanda Baumgarten Carnitas Snack Shack is my go-to for good food fast that takes advantage of local farms and seasonal produce. Also Nine-Ten—Chef Jason Knibb is a genius, simple as that.

William Bradley I love the atmosphere and ocean view at Shimbashi Izakaya, a Japanese tapas and sake bar in Del Mar. I also recommend Café Chloe, a terrific European-style café with a great downtown ener-getic buzz for casual fare.

Trey Foshee Solace & the Moonlight Lounge is my neighborhood spot. I also really enjoy Cucina Enoteca for mezcal and a burger.

Matt Gordon For a casual meal, I go to Tony’s Jacal. I love the fact that they have fresh roasted turkey in a Mexican restau-rant. When I splurge, it’s George’s California Modern.

Martin Woesle Sushi Ota, a small Japanese restaurant hidden in a strip mall in Pacific Beach. Mr. Ota creates the most delicious small bites of the most unusual seafood.

FOODIE ALERT

JEFF JACKSONAt A.R. Valentien, the signature restaurant at the Lodge at Torrey Pines, Jeff Jackson showcases innova-tive California seasonal cuisine starring local produce. The menu changes daily, according to what is at the peak of freshness.

KATHERINE HUMPHUSA graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Katherine Humphus worked at The French Laundry in Yount-ville, Calif., before joining the Cohn Restaurant Group and opening BO-beau Kitch-en + Bar, a French bistro in the heart of Ocean Beach that has since expanded to La Mesa and Long Beach. Her crispy Brussels sprouts have become a local comfort food staple.

RACHEL KING Diners with a discerning sweet tooth will appreciate King’s elegant and well-balanced desserts at Nine-Ten, which are crafted with seasonal produce sourced from local farmers, and topped with inventive house-churned sorbet and ice cream.

JASON KNIBBThe Montego Bay-born and Southern California-raised chef has been craft-ing fresh, seasonal cuisine for more than a decade at Nine-Ten, the much-lauded restaurant in La Jolla’s Grande Colonial Hotel. Knibb’s five-course “Mercy of the Chef” tasting menu is one of the city’s best fine dining values at $80 ($120 with wine pairings).

JEFFREY STRAUSS After nearly two decades of cooking for VIPs (including five U.S. presidents) in New York City, Jeffrey Strauss moved to San Diego to open Pamplemousse Grille, a comfortable yet inspired European restaurant in Solana Beach. The meat-heavy menu is influenced by his experiences in some of Europe’s finest Michelin-rated restaurants.

MARTIN WOESLESince 1985, this acclaimed chef has been the force behind the farm-fresh fare at Mille Fleurs, a casual fine dining spot located a mile from Chino Farms in Rancho Santa Fe. The signature dish, breaded Strauss Farm Veal “Wiener Schnitzel,” pays tribute to his German heritage.

ITALIAN: MONELLO Specializing in inventive plays on Milanese street food, this Italian eatery is a local favorite. The crowd-pleasing menu is filled with Italian specialties incorporating imported cheeses, artisanal charcuterie and a 27-ingredient, house-made sweet vermouth.

1655 India St., Little ItalyTip: Head in between 4 and 7 p.m. for “Milanese Aperitivo,” when each drink comes with a trio of complimentary small bites from the chef.

INDIAN: ASHOKA THE GREAT Regulars at this Miramar mainstay make the drive out for award-winning curries, specialty dishes cooked in a tandoor (a cylindrical clay oven) and in-novative desserts like homemade cheese medallions in honey rose water. An affordable lunch and dinner buffet offers variety for diners who don’t care to be limited by menu selections.

9474 Black Mountain Road, Suite G, MiramarTip: All dishes can be ordered mild, medium or hot. Err on the side of caution.

BRITISH: CHURCHILL’S PUB & GRILLETake a break from touring San Diego’s famed brewery corridor at this authentic British pub. Don’t be deterred by the reputa-tion of British dishes; the food is sure to please hungry visitors, regardless of their beer intake.

887 W. San Marcos Blvd., San MarcosTip: They always offer two cask-conditioned beers, so make sure to check out what’s on tap.

CHINESE: WANG’S NORTH PARK The menu at this cavernous Asian fusion restaurant is separated into flavors: sweet, spicy and savory. Selections trend toward Chinese favorites, but items like panko-crusted sweet and sour perch with Thai peanut sauce delve into more experimental realms.

3029 University Ave., North ParkTip: They have separate vegetarian and gluten-free menus.

THAI: LOTUS THAI With two locations in San Diego, this modern Thai joint is a popular noontime destination because their lunch special includes an entrée, soup, salad, crispy vegetable roll and steamed rice, all for one low price.

906 Market St., East Village and 3761 Sixth Ave., HillcrestTip: Try the Tom Kha (sweet and sour coconut soup). It’s the best in town.

KOREAN: MANNA KOREAN BBQ This all-you-can-cook-and-eat Korean BBQ joint has grills at the table to cook the meats. Their basic buffet includes 11 cuts of meat, while the premium menu includes seafood and prime rib—both options come with unlimited sides.

MARCELA VILLADOLIDMEET

Local Farm: I’m a huge fan of Lucila de Alejandro and her amazing Suzie’s Farm. She’s so inspiring when she gives a tour and talk; it’s as if she personally knows each and every single veggie on her fi eld.

Farmers Market: My favorite is the Little Italy Mercato on Saturdays.

Kid-Friendly Fun: My son Fausto and I love to cruise Balboa Park for the museums and parks. The La Jolla Cove is another magical place. And who doesn’t love Belmont Park?

Beach: Coronado Beach, right in front of the Hotel del Coronado, even in the winter.

Eatery: We are a Puesto taco-loving family.

Internationally acclaimed photographer Aaron Chang traveled the world and shot for Surfing magazine for 25 years. Presently, he has two stellar Aaron Chang Ocean Art Galleries (789 W. Harbor Drive and 415 S. Cedros Ave.) and a new book entitled San Diego (aaronchang.com), which explores local culture and beauty from the beaches of Torrey Pines to the pulsing modern life of the city. We asked him to describe his perfect day in San Diego.

AARON CHANG

MORNING I’d start the day with a sunrise surf at Cardiff Reef, followed by a ginger spice muffin and organic coffee at Ki’s. From there, it’s fun to explore the new art galleries and surf shops in Encinitas and Solana Beach, and have lunch at Lockwood Table in Solana Beach.

AFTERNOON The evening glass off Black’s Beach in the winter is my favorite place to go for a swim to shoot surfing photos from the water. The walk is great exercise, and Black’s is arguably the best surf spot in San Diego.

EVENING I love cruising through the museums in Balboa Park or exploring the new galleries in Little Italy, fol-lowed by dinner at The Headquarters. My cur-rent favorite eateries are Puesto for great tacos and margaritas, and Seasons 52 for unmatched freshness and quality food, not to mention Eddie V’s for the seafood. I’d finish the night with a cocktail at Top of the Hyatt with my lovely wife.Aaron Chang is a SDTA Ambassador and your Guide to the Good Stuff.

Traveling with PetsFrom pup-friendly patios and pooch-pampering hotels to dog beaches and plenty of green-grass parks to play in, San Diego is downright dog-friendly.

PARK YOUR PAWSPet-friendly hotels have popped up all over town offering doggie delights and posh pads for pups. Hotel Indigo (509 Ninth Ave.) welcomes tail-waggers with doggie treat “cookies” and a comfy dog bed, and there’s no restriction on the weight, breed, size or number of pets. Certain packages even include doggie day care while you are out and about. For urban overnights, the Hilton Gaslamp (401 K St.) allows two pets—each under 75 pounds—and a convenient dog park sits right in front of the hotel. The Handlery (50 Hotel Circle North) allows dogs under 35 pounds to enjoy vacation with their pet par-ents, and Luv San Diego Surf (4439 Lamont St.) wins the blue ribbon for being a pet-friendly boutique vacation rental company with charming, home-away-from-home digs in the heart of Mission Beach. At Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina (1380 Harbor Island Drive) take the 3-mile path that wraps around Harbor Island, great for dog walking along the bay and sunset strolls. Two paws up for Ocean Villa Inn (5142 W. Point Loma Blvd.), located just a Frisbee toss from Dog Beach. The seaside gem is stocked with amenities your pup will love, includ-ing a dog wash, communal dog run, dog patios and complimentary dog treats.

PLAY WITH YOUR PUPGo for a romp around the dog parks within Balboa Park. Grape

Street Dog Park (2800 Grape St.) is the largest option, and shaded by eucalyptus trees. For a game of catch, head to

Morley Field Dog Park (2221 Morley Field Drive) or Nate’s Point (2500 Balboa Drive), which is completely fenced off. San Diego’s beaches aren’t just for humans to enjoy. Play fetch or doggy-paddle at one of San Diego’s many dog beaches, like Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, North Dog Beach Run in Coronado, Del Mar Dog

Beach or Dog Beach in Ocean Beach—all dog nirvanas. After all that sandy fun, head to Dog Beach Dog Wash (4933

Voltaire St.) in Ocean Beach for a do-it-yourself rinse and wash.

Both Morley Field Dog Park and Nate’s Point are open 24/7.
