Representing Business Interests to Government

The Business Council of the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce reviews and makes recommendation on local issues of concern including Legislation, Guidelines & Regulations, which may affect the prosperity of the business community of San Clemente.

In October of 2010, the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce Business Council began reviewing the City business license structure, and reported their findings to the Chamber Board of Directors.

The City’s existing license tax structure puts San Clemente on a competitive disadvantage when compared to neighboring cities. The closest City with a similar license structure is Carlsbad, and there may be no others at a similar distance.

The City Manager, City Treasurer and Chamber have been working on this issue for quite some time and have come up with some excellent ideas regarding a revised fee structure.

On July 22, 2011 the Chamber Board made a recommendation to the City Council to create a more equitable business license tax structure; impose code enforcement and for the City Council to agendize the issue.

On February 10, 2012 the Chamber sent a follow-up letter to the City Council requesting that while the City is in the process of creating a more equitable business license structure by combining Code 1 & 2, that they also consider modifying all aspects of the existing code that are complex, inequitable or create unusually large license fees.

The business license fee was discussed during a recent Council meeting to review a long-term financial plan that the City updates yearly. The Council listened to changes suggested by City staff but rejected them after staff said the changes would cost the city $200,000 out of $900,000 in annual license revenue.

The vote was 3-1, with Councilman Tim Brown absent and Mayor Jim Evert the only one in favor of the proposed changes. “We can make an argument that any tax is unfair,” Councilman Bob Baker said. “I just don’t see a compelling reason to change this.” Chuck Narey, chairman of the Chamber’s Business Council, said: “We’ve been working on this for quite a while. Our main thrust was to try to get rid of some of the inequities.”

He said professionals pay a much higher rate than retail and wholesale businesses and that the chamber hopes to simplify the code. A staff proposal to put professionals in the same category as retail and wholesale would be a good start, Narey said.

Asked about the highest rate any San Clemente business is paying, Kumi Elston, Central Services Officer, said: “It’s a service-based medical company, it’s about $34,000 a year.” A typical clothing store downtown pays $150, while a large franchise store pays $2,200, a restaurant or liquor store $350. An auto-repair shop might pay $600, a dental office $550, a medical office $400 Elston said. License fees in all neighboring cities are less than $100 for all businesses.

The San Clemente Business Council and Chamber Board of Directors appreciate the City staff and Council members analyzing this issue and feel that the end result will be a revised system, which will not only ultimately benefit San Clemente businesses, but will create a business friendly environment and ultimately attract businesses, put people to work and create a strong local economy.

The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce looks forward to serving our members as the #1 business advocacy organization in San Clemente. We will remain steadfast in our efforts to shape a business community in which companies of all sizes will prosper.

Providing Networking Opportunities and Business Contacts(Technology article cont. from page 1)

The Social Media Divide Grows. According to our 2011 Impact of Social Business in Small and Medium Business Study, about 50% of SMBs already use social media, and another 25% plan to do so within the next 12 months. The study shows that about half of SMBs take a strategic and structured approach with social media. These “strategically Social” companies uses social media for more activities, employ more channels, and are more satisfi ed with the business results than the other half of SMBs that are still throwing spaghetti on the Facebook wall. As new social media tools-from crowd-sourced pricing to video commerce-take shape, SMB social media “haves” will gain business ground on the “have-nots” in an exponential manner. Cloud Becomes the New Normal. The results of our 2011 SMB Routes to Market Study reveal that demand for cloud-based solutions is accelerating in almost all solution areas. Areas that show the biggest potential for cloud gains in 2012 are marketing automation, business intelligence/analytics, and desktop virtualization solutions and services. Arguments for cloud computing-reduced capital costs, speed to deploy, and real-time collaboration and Visibility- are compelling. Mobile Application Use Grows. In a custom study we completed last summer, SMBs indicated that they plan to signifi cantly increase spending on mobile devices and services in the next 12 months, with the highest jump in the 5 to 49 employee size band. Some of the strongest categories or SMB current and planned mobile app use are mobile payments (52%), time management (59%), fi eld service (59%), and customer information management (69%).

We are so fortunate. Ours is a beautiful place to live and our days are a continuing series of remarkable moments. Waves wash our shores, sails billow in perfect winds and every sunset outdoes the one the night before as we watch them from the beach, the pier, the harbor or while riding a horse across a high ridge. And that is just the winters! Paul Gavin paints those moments. On the cover are “Reverence”, pelicans skimming the water and waves off Capistrano Beach, “Fog Fishing” a father and son angling in the early morning mist on the San Clemente Pier and “Spirit of San Juan”, a solitary horse and rider bathed in dissipating warm light high above San Juan Capistrano and its lengthening evening shadows with Saddleback in the distance. These pieces overlay “David… West Wind” the painting of a young man sailing out of the Dana Point Harbor in the calm and warm dusk breeze with the Dana Point headlands, the harbor jetty and the masts of boats protected within it all backlit by the brilliant last light before sunset.

Ours is a wonderful life in a beautiful place.

We fi rst opened Asher’s Boutique on March 1, 1988 in the small town of Salado, Texas. We are a women’s contemporary boutique. Very Fashionable, and good quality. We strive to always carry the most fashionable apparel, shoes and accessories. I spent nearly 15 years creating an empire of clothing suitable for women. When I started, I only wanted clothing to display in order to sell my shoes. However, I quickly notices selling clothing would make of good business as well. I immediately proceeded to foucus on what my customers wore to my store and gained insight from there. I fi gured with apparel, you’ve got to keep up with the ages of the customers and the shapes of their bodies. I had a better idea of what was in demand and procceded to crate a unique product mix expandable to all my customers.

Fllowing the time in Salado I moved my store to Houston and spent 14 years there. From there I took my store to San Diego and currently in San Clemente. I moved to San Clemente because being a resident of Orange County for over 11 years I decided to take the initiative and dress my fellow neighbors from head to toe. My passion is selling clothing suitable for all types of women. Being here in San Clemente I want to make it an emphasis that todays fashion can be good quality and affordable.

The following Chamber members participated in this elite contestant: Adele’s at the San Clemente Inn - Adele Lux & Morgan Bunjet, Mixologists; Brick – Andre Svadjian, Mixologist; Café Mimosa – Antoine Price, Mixologist; Duke’s – Lisa Brandriff, Mixologist; OC Tavern – Kirsten Garber, Mixologist; Ole’s Tavern – Yvonne Kimball, Mixologist; Red Fox Lounge – Sally Daniel, Mixologist; St. Roy @ Vine – Vince Bough & Jared Cook, Mixologists; Sundried Tomato an American Bistro – Erin Meek, Mixologist; Sunsets at the Pier – Steph Schaller, Mixologist and Taka-O Japanese Restaurant – Michael Swain, Mixologist.

Master of Ceremonies, Mayor Pro Tem Tim Brown, held the guests captivated as he announced each stage of the contest. They enjoyed witnessing the bartenders as they mixed their specialty drink and then waited with anticipation as the beverages where presented to judges

to be voted on. In the meantime the attendees savored gourmet hors d’oeuvres and enjoyed the sparkling atmosphere.

After an intense judging, the two top contenders were chosen.

The finalists, OC Tavern-Mixologist Kirsten Garber with the fabulous “Gin & Berries” competing with Ole’s Tavern-Mixologist Yvonne Kimball and their flavorsome “Poche Punch.” Each finalist offered their specialty drink to the judges one last time, and a winner was chosen….Wow! – It was a Tie - Congratulations to OC Tavern & Ole’s Tavern for winning the 8th Annual San Clemente Official Drink Contest.

Competition was also fierce with the People’s Choice Category. The drinks were all so wonderful it was a difficult decision. Congratulation goes to Red Fox Lounge and Mixologist Sally Daniel with “Sally Sells Sea Shells by the Sea Shore” for winning the 8th Annual San Clemente Official Drink Contest People’s Choice Awards.

Ole’s Tavern – Yvonne Kimball, Mixologist won the prestigious Best Presentation for her production of “Poche Punch.”

The winner’s specialty drink was quickly adopted by participating restaurants as the official San Clemente drink.

Thank you to all the participating Restaurants, Mixologists and Judges.

Creating a Strong Local Economy

San Clemente Chamber of Commerce Street Festival

The San Clemente Fiesta Street Festival is presented by the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce and participating sponsors. It is a unique family-orientated event, held on the second Sunday in August from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The Fiesta Street Festival Block Party represents a variety of activities that attract numerous families and visitors to the Southern California Coast year after year, approximately 45,000 people will attend this party.

Sponsoring the Fiesta is a tremendous opportunity to develop public awareness of your business and/or service. It also sends a message of your willingness to extend goodwill toward your community. This year’s event is a highly visible advertising tool in local and regional markets. The Fiesta Street Festival includes a variety of family activities.

The Fiesta’s attendance has grown annually with participants and spectators converging on San Clemente for this summer celebration. The uniqueness of San Clemente, the “Spanish Village by the Sea,” is resourcefully showcased during the August event. Sponsorship of the summer Fiesta is designed to provide positive revenue and exposure to businesses and local nonprofit organizations. All the food and game booths for this event are run by the local nonprofit organizations, as a way of helping them raise much-needed funds. Those funds are then distributed throughout the community for very worthwhile causes.

The San Clemente Street Festival is held on picturesque Ave. Del Mar, where the two main blocks of downtown San Clemente are dedicated to an entire day of FUN.

The San Clemente Fiesta Street Festival - This event features activities for the whole family, including: Food and game booths sponsored by local nonprofit organizations, three stages with continuous live music throughout the day, contests for all ages, a Salsa Challenge, arts & crafts show, kiddie rides, a classic car & motorcycle show, exhibits, clowns, jugglers, face painters and much more.

FIESTA STREET FESTIVAL

Non-Profit Food & Games BoothsWe have forty-five local, nonprofit service organizations that use the Fiesta as their yearly fund-raiser. Their contributions to the event include: array of international food booths, refreshments and game booths for all ages. This opportunity for our local service organizations has been a means for local business, through the Chamber of Commerce, to work as a unit for the betterment of our community.

Live EntertainmentThree stages with continuous entertainment throughout the day. Each year thousands of people attend the Fiesta, while musical groups play tunes ranging from rock-n-roll to country to blues. Participants can enjoy music throughout the day and into the evening, whether they dance or just listen. Headlining artists at the Fiesta have included such great names as the Original Coasters, Rita Coolidge, A Tribute to the Drifters, Hotel California “A Tribute to the Eagles” and Wild Child “A Tribute to the Doors.” There are also performances from local nonprofit dance groups, strolling magicians, artists, jugglers and clowns. Whatever your taste is in music and dancing, the Fiesta will have it.

ContestsContests and events, for all ages, are planned, including: Baskin Robbins Brain Freeze Ice Cream Eating Contest, Jump Rope, Pie Eating, Hula Hoop, Tortilla Toss, Easter Egg Hunt, Costco Diaper Derby, Piñata Contest, Pickle Eating and Cassano’s Pizza Eating Contest.

Salsa ChallengeThe “Salsa Challenge” is back and hotter than ever! Lured by the aroma of chili peppers and the beat of Mariachi music, Southern Californians enjoy this flavored-filled contest. Individual and restaurant chefs create recipes which are then judged. This contest continues to expand in popularity.

Teams are encouraged to decorate their areas by wearing sombreros, ponchos and huaraches. They are then awarded prizes and the opportunity to vie for the best salsa North of the border. The public relishes the idea of sampling several varieties of “California Hot Sauces” and quenches their palates with cool refreshments.

Arts & Craft ExhibitThe Fiesta will feature an arts & craft show. This exhibit showcases only handcrafted merchandise from talented individual from Southern California.

Business ExpositionWith an audience of over 25,000 people expected to attend, the Fiesta Business Expo is a great opportunity for businesses to highlight their goods and services. The Expo gives companies direct contact with numerous potential new customers in a single day! Must be a member in good standing to participate.
