    Get Your Phone Ready

    Install the Battery

    1.Insert a coin or other at object into the slot atthe top of the battery compartment cover to

    remove the cover.

    2.Align the batterys contacts with those inside thebattery compartment and gently press downuntil the battery is seated.

    3.Replace the back cover.

    Charge the Battery

    1.Insert the USB cable into the charging head.

    2.Insert the small end of the USB cable intothe charger/accessory jack at the bottom ofthe phone.

    3.Plug the charging head into a standard ACpower outlet.

    Activate Your Phone

    Activate Your Phone

    If you purchased your phone at a Sprint Store, it

    is probably activated and ready to use.

    If you received your phone in the mail, and it is anew Sprint account or a new phone number, your

    phone is designed to activate automatically when

    you rst turn it on. You will see a HandsFree

    Activation screen at startup. When its nished,

    tap OK to continue. To conrm your activation,

    make a phone call.

    If you received your phone in the mail and

    it is going to be activated on an existing

    number (youre swapping phones), go to

    sprint.com/activateand follow the instructions.

    When you have nished, make a phonconrm your activation. If your phone activated or you do not have access toInternet, contact Sprint Customer Serv

    Android Basics: Getting Around Your Phone

    Move Around Your Phones Menusand Screens

    Your phones touchscreen lets you control

    everything through various types of touches,or gestures.

    Tap:When you want to type using the onscreenkeyboard, select items such as application andsettings icons, or press onscreen buttons, simplytap them with your nger. A light touch works best.

    Touchandhold: To display the available optionsfor an item simply touch and hold the item.

    Flick:Move your nger in lighter, quicker strokesthan swiping. This nger gesture is always used ina vertical motion, such as when icking throughcontacts or a message list.

    Swipeorslide: Quickly drag your nger verticallyor horizontally across the screen.

    Drag: Press and hold your nger with somepressure before you start to move it. Do notrelease your nger until you have reached thetarget position.

    Rotate: Activate the auto-rotate feature toautomatically change the screen orientationfrom portrait to landscape by turning the

    phone sideways.

    T9Trace: This unique feature allows you to entera word by sliding a nger from letter to letter, liftingonly between words. See page 10 for instructionson using this text input method.

    Your QWERTY Keyboards

    There are two ways to use the QWERTY keyboard

    on your Galaxy S III: traditional one-tap key entry

    (typing) and T9 Trace (default), which uses aunique gliding method to let you enter whole

    words quickly. When you select a eld that requires

    text or numbers, an onscreen keyboard will appear

    so you can enter the information, or type your

    message. (If you dont see the keyboard when, for

    instance, youre entering contact information, just

    touch the eld youre working on to bring it up.)The phones onscreen QWERTY keyboards can be

    used in either portrait or landscape mode.

    Text Entry with T9 Trace

    1.Touch an onscreen character, and then, while

    maintaining your nger onscreen, drag to the

    next character in the desired word.

    Traditional Text Entry (Typing)

    Note: To switch from the T9 Trace (default) to regulartyping, tap on the keyboard, tap the check marknext to T9 Trace to turn it off, and then tap toreturn to the keyboard.

    Entering text using the traditional QWERTYkeyboardis easy: just tap the letters to type the words.

    1.From a screen where you can enter text, tap theinput eld to reveal the onscreen keyboard.

    2.If needed, select one of the following text

    mode options: ABC to use alphabetic characters from the

    onscreen keyboard.

    123Sym to enter numbers or symbols on theonscreen keyboard.

    3.Tap the corresponding onscreen keysbegin typing your word.

    If you make a mistake, tap to erase a

    character. Touch and hold to erase alpreviously entered words.

    Entering Text With the Onscreen Keyboard

    Your Keyboard Settings

    You can customize your onscreen keyboardsettings to suit your needs:

    Tap >Settings> Languageandinput, andtap the Settings icon next to Samsungkeyboard. Select from the following options:

    Portraitkeyboardtypes lets you select from atraditional Qwerty keyboard layout or a 3x4keyboard (multi-tap) when entering text inportrait mode.

    Inputlanguage lets you select an input language.Default is English.

    Predictivetext toggles on or off to let you selectwhether or not you want to see possible wordmatches when youre typing.

    T9Trace Check/Uncheck the T9 Trace entrymethod on or off. If its off, you will enter text bytapping the letters one at a time as with atraditional keyboard.

    Handwriting toggles on or off to let youin certain apps by tracing letters with y

    Voiceinput lets you show or hide the vbutton on the keyboard.

    Autocapitalization automatically capitrst letter of a sentence.

    Auto-punctuate automatically inserts awhen you tap the space bar twice.

    Characterpreview displays a small poallowing you to conrm which characteyouve tapped.

    Key-tapvibration provides vibration fewith each tap.

    Key-tapsound provides auditory feedeach tap.

    Tutorial provides an overview of text enon your Galaxy S III.

    Resetsettings lets you return all keybosettings to factory defaults.

    Make a Phone Call

    1.If the screen is locked, swipe the screen to

    unlock it.

    2.Press and tap Phone.3.Tap the digits of the number you want to call on

    the phone keypad. (The number will appear just

    above the keypad as you enter it. Tap todelete one or more digits.)

    4.Tap .

    Voicemail

    Set Up Your Voicemail

    All unanswered calls are automatically transferred to

    your voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned

    off. You should set up your voicemail and personalgreeting as soon as your phone is activated:

    1.Press > and tap Voicemail.

    2.Follow the voice prompts to create yourpassword and record your name and greeting.

    Sprint strongly recommends setting a voicemail

    password. Without a password, anyone who hasaccess to your phone can access your

    messages.

    Retrieve Your Voicemail

    1.Press > and tap Voicemail.

    2.Tap a message to listen to it.

    From any other phone:

    1.Dial your wireless phone number.

    2.When your voicemail answers, press *3.Enter your password.

    Send a Text Message

    1.Press and tapMessaging .

    2.Tap .

    3.Enter a phone number, email address, or contactname in the Enterrecipient eld. (If the phonerecognizes a contact, youll see a list. Touch thecontact to complete the address.)

    4.TapEntermessage and then type your message.

    5.When you are nished, tap Send.

    Send a Picture or Video Message(Multimedia Messaging)

    1.Follow steps 1 4 for sending a text message.

    2.Tap Attach .

    3.Tap a media type (such as Pictures, Videos,Audio, etc.) and then tap an available album.

    4.Tap a picture or clip to select it. (For Audio, tap OK.)

    5.If you are satised with your message, tap .

    Save a Phone Number1.Press and tap .

    2.Enter a phone number using the onscreen keypad.

    4.Select an account for the contact. Select Googleto save the contact to your Google account,which will update automatically across all your

    Google devices. Select Phone to save thecontact to your phone only.

    5.Tap Name and enter a name for the new entry.

    6.Tap Mobile (default) to select a label such as

    Mobile, Home, Work, WorkFax, HomeFax,

    Pager, Other, Custom, orCallback.

    Edit a Contact Entry

    1.Press and tap Contacts > [contactyou'd like to edit].

    2.Press and tap Edit.

    3.Tap an option:

    [image icon] to assign a picture to the entry.

    Name to edit the current name.

    Phone to add or delete a phone number.

    Email to add or delete an email address.

    Address to enter a physical address for the

    contact. Choose from Home, Work, Other,

    orCustom.

    4.Tap Save to save your updates.

    Note: To add a phone number, email adother field to an existing contact, tapAd

    Email

    Your phones Email applications let you accessand manage multiple email accounts simultaneously

    in one convenient location. Although there is aseparate Gmail application, the main email

    application can manage both Internet-based emailservices (Gmail and Yahoo) and Corporate Work

    Email (Outlook). The phone can also be manuallycongured to connect to other email systems.

    Set Up a Gmail Account

    1.Press and tap > Gmail .

    2.Follow the instructions to set up or sign in to aGmail account.

    Note: Although you need a Gmail account to usecertain features such as Google Play, you do nothave to use Gmail as the default account foryour phone.

    Set Up a POP3/IMAP Email Acco

    1.Press and tap > Email .

    2.If another email account is already set

    9.Identify your new account with a unique name andprovide the outgoing name text then tap Done.

    camera lens at your subject, and tap .View Pictures

    Record a Video

    1.Press and tap > Camera, and thentoggle the control from camera to camcorder.

    2.Choose a video length recording mode by

    2.From the Sprint home page, select categories,navigate to websites, read blogs, downloadcontent, and more.

    Tap a category to open it.

    For more options, press from any page.Options may include Forward, Newwindow,Addbookmark, Addshortcuttohome, Sharepage, Findonpage, Desktopview, Saveforofinereading, Brightnessandcolors,Downloads, Print, and Settings.

    To scroll, slide your nger up or down the page.

    To zoom in or out, pinch the screen.

    Downloading Apps From the Web

    You can download Apps while browsinWeb, but you must rst set permissionssettings to allow applications from unknsources. Applications downloaded fromGoogle Play Store app (see page 23) drequire additional permissions.

    Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

    When youre in range of an available Wi-Finetwork you can use your phones Wi-Fi feature toaccess the Internet and other data services.

    1.Press > and tap Settings .

    2.Tap the icon next to Wi-Fi and slide to the onposition to turn Wi-Fi on.

    3.Tap Scanto display a list of available networks.

    4.Tap a Wi-Fi network to connect. If necessary,

    enter the security key (password) and tapConnect.

    When youre connected to a Wi-Fi network,youll see the Wi-Fi icon ( ) in the status bar.

    Note: To quickly toggle Wi-Fi on or off, pthe Notifications panel from any screentap Wi-Fi. You can also toggle BluetootSilentmode, Screen rotation, Mobile da

    2.The rst time you visit the Google Play Store app,tap Accept to accept the Terms of Service.

    Browse through featured apps and games. Scrollthrough the options or browse by categorieswithin Apps, Games, Music, Books, orMovies.

    Search for an app or game. Tap at the topof the Google Play Store app home screen,enter the name or key word, and then tapin the bottom right corner.
