    This User Manual covers models SMX-F0, SMX-F,SMX-F4, SMX-F00, SMX-F01 and SMX-F0.

    The SMX-F50, SMX-F500, SMX-F501 and SMX-F530 do not

    have built-in lash memory and uses memory cards. Althoughsome eatures o the SMX-F50, SMX-F53, SMX-F54, SMX-F500,SMX-F501 and SMX-F530 models are dierent, they operate inthe same way.

    Illustrations o model SMX-F50 are used in this user manual.

    The displays in this user manual may not be exactly the sameas those you see on the LCD screen.

    Beore using this camcorder

    This camcorder records video in H.264 (MPEG4 part10/AVC)format and in Standard Definition Video (SD-VIDEO).

    You can play back and edit the video recorded by thecamcorder on a personal computer using the internalsoftware of this camcorder.

    Please note that this camcorder is not compatible with otherdigital video formats.

    Before recording important video, make a trial recording.Play back your trial recording to make sure the video and audiohave been recorded properly.

    Recorded contents may be lost due to a mistake when handlingthis camcorder or memory card, etc. Samsung will not providecompensation or damages due to the loss o recorded contents.

    Make a backup of important recorded data.Protect your important recorded data by copying the iles toa PC. We also recommend you copy it rom your PC to otherrecording media or storage. Reer to the sotware installation andUSB connection guide.

    STEP 1: Get ready

    Recording videos

    Your camcorder uses advanced H.264 compression technology to

    give you the clearest video quality.

    1. Open the LCD screen and press the Power ( ) button to turnon the camcorder.

    Set the lens cover open/close switch to open ( ).page 11

    2. Press the Recording start/stop button.To stop recording, press the Recording start/stop button.

    Recording photos

    Your camcorder can record high quality photos with a 4:3 or 16:9

    aspect ratio.

    1. Open the LCD screen and press the Power ( ) button to turnon the camcorder.

    2. Fully press the PHOTO button when the subject is in ocus.

    You can record videos in SD (standard deinition) quality. The deault setting is TV Fine 20x6(0i). page 47You cannot take photos while you are recording videos.

    STEP 3: Play back videos or photos

    Viewing videos or photos on the LCD screenYou can ind recordings quickly by using the thumbnail index view.

    1 Press the MODE button to select the Play mode.The thumbnail index view appears. The thumbnail o the latest created or played ile ishighlighted.

    2. Select the Video or Photo thumbnail index view screen.You can easily switch between video and photo thumbnail view using the zoom lever.

    3. Use the Control (Up/Down/Left/Right) button to select a desired video or photo, and then pressthe Control(OK) button.

    Importing and viewing videos/photos from the camcorder to your PC

    1. Launch the Intelli-studio programme by connecting the camcorder to your PC witha USB cable.

    A new ile saving screen appears with the Intelli-studio main window. ClickYes, and the uploading procedure starts.

    2. The new iles are saved to your PC and registered to Contents Manageron the Intelli-studio programme.

    You can arrange the iles by dierent options such as Face, Date, Location, etc.

    3. Double-click on the ile you would like to playback.

    Sharing the videos/photos onto YouTube/Flickr/FacebookShare your contents with the world by uploading photos and videos directly to aweb site with a single click.Click the Share Upload tab on the browser. page 100

    Intelli-studio runs automatically when you connect the camcorder to aWindows computer (i you have set PC Software: On). page 89

    STEP 5: Delete videos or photos

    I the camcorders storage media is ull, you cannot record new videos or photos. Delete videos or photos you have saved to yourcomputer rom the camcorders storage media. Then you can record new videos or photos on newly reed up space.

    ATTACHING THE STRAP

    Adjust the length o Strap so that the camcorder is stable when youpress the Recording start/stop button with your thumb.

    Please note: I the hand strap is adjusted too tightly and youuse excessive orce to insert your hand, the hand strap hooko the camcorder may be damaged.

    ADJUSTING THE LCD SCREEN

    The wide LCD screen on your camcorder oers high quality imageviewing.

    1. Open the LCD screen with your inger.The screen opens up to 90.

    2. Rotate the LCD screen towards the lens.You can rotate it up to 180 towards the lens and up to90 backwards. To view recordings more conveniently, rotatethe screen by 180 towards the lens, then old it back to thebody.

    Excessive rotation may damage the connective hingebetween the screen and the camcorder.

    When the LCD screen is rotated by 180, the let and right sideso the subject are shown in reverse, which produces a horizontallylipped image.Remove ingerprints or dust on the screen with a sot cloth.To adjust the LCD brightness and colour, reer to the page 85.Samsungs super ine LCD technology activates about 99.99%pixels on the LCD screen. Although one or two black dots or brightdots (red, blue, white) could appear on the screen, this is not amalunction and does not aect the recorded image.

    USING THE BATTERY

    We recommend you purchase one or more additional batteries to

    allow continuous use o your camcorder.Be sure to charge the battery beore you start using yourcamcorder.The battery may be charged a little at the time o purchase.

    Battery insertion/ejection

    To insert the battery

    1. Insert the battery into the battery slot until it sotly clicks.Make sure that the SAMSUNG logo on the battery is acingyou when the camcorder is placed as shown in the igure.

    To eject the battery

    1. Gently push the Battery release switch in the direction shown in

    the diagram to eject the battery.

    2. Push down, and then lit the battery out in the direction shown inthe diagram.

    Use only Samsung-approved batteries. Do not usebatteries rom other manuacturers. Otherwise, there is a

    danger o overheating, ire or explosion.Samsung is not responsible or problems caused byunapproved batteries.Remove the battery rom the camcorder when thecamcorder is not in use.

    Using theUSB cable

    Connect the USB cable to the camcorder properly, and thenconnect the other end to a USB port o a PC.

    Charging the battery at low temperature may take longer or thebattery may not charge ully (green indicator will not turn on).Please make sure that there are no oreign substances on the plugor in the socket when you connect the AC power supply to thecamcorder.When using the AC power supply, place it close to the wall outlet. Iyou experience a malunction while using the camcorder, separate

    the AC power supply immediately rom the wall outlet.Do not use the AC power supply in a tight space, such as betweenurnishings.

    When recording indoors with a wall outlet available, it is convenient to usethe AC power supply instead o the battery.We recommend you charge the battery in a place with an ambienttemperature between 50F and 86F ( 10C ~ 30C).When charging, i both the USB cable and AC power adaptor areconnected, the AC power adaptor will override the USB.I the camcorder is turned on, the battery will still charge, but morecharging time will be needed. We recommend you keep the camcorder

    turned o while it charges.

    About the battery

    Battery PropertiesA lithium-ion battery is small-sized and has a high capacity. Low

    ambient temperature (below 50F(10C)) may shorten its usagetime and aect its unction. Beore recording in low temperatures,put the battery into your pocket to warm it, then install it in thecamcorder.Make sure to store the battery separately after use.- A small amount o battery power is consumed when the

    battery is stored in the camcorder even i the camcorderpower is o.

    - The battery may be completely discharged, i it has beeninstalled and let in the camcorder or a long period o time.I this occurs, the battery may not ully operate even i youcharge it.

    - I the battery is not used or a long time, ully charge thebattery and then, using your camcorder, drain the chargecompletely. Do this once every 3 months to keep the batteryunctioning properly. To store the battery, remove it rom yourcamcorder and put it in a cool, dry place.

    Charge an extra battery before using the camcorderoutdoors in cold temperatures.- The cold temperature may shorten the length o time you can

    use the battery beore needing to recharge it.

    - Carry the supplied AC power adaptor to charge the batterywhile travelling.

    Check whether the battery terminal is damaged if the batteryfalls or is dropped.- I you install a battery with the damaged terminal into the

    camcorder, you can damage the camcorder.Remove the battery and the memory card from thecamcorder and disconnect the AC power adaptor after use.- Store the battery in a stable, cool and dry place.

    (Recommended temperature : 59F ~ 77F (15C ~ 25C),recommended humidity: 40%~ 60%)

    - Temperatures that are too high or too low shorten the batterylietime.

    - The battery terminals can become rusty or malunction i thebattery is stored in a smoky or dusty location.

    Recycle or dispose of your dead batteries properly.The battery lifetime is limited.- Battery capacity decreases over time and through repeated

    use. I decreased usage time between charges becomessigniicant, it is probably time to replace the battery with a newone.

    - Each batterys lie is aected by storage, and operating andenvironmental conditions.

    Make sure to turn o the camcorder beore disconnecting the AC

    power adaptor. Otherwise, you can damage the storage media ordata.Use a nearby wall outlet when using the AC power adaptor.Disconnect the AC power adaptor rom the wall outlet immediately iany malunction occurs while using your camcorder.Do not place the AC Adaptor in a conined space when you use it,such as between a wall and a piece o urniture.

    Be sure to use the included AC power adaptor to power thecamcorder. Using other AC power adaptors could cause electricshock or result in ire.You can use the AC power adaptor around the world. An AC plug

    adaptor is required in some oreign countries. I you need one,purchase it rom your distributor.The charging time will vary depending on the charge remaining in thebattery.The battery is charged over 95% ater about 2 hours, and theindicator colour changes to green. It takes about 2 hours and 40minutes or the battery to charge 100%.

    TURNING YOUR CAMCORDER ON/OFF

    1. Open the LCD screen and press the Power ( ) button to turn

    on the camcorder.Set the lens cover open/close switch to open ( ).

    2. To turn o the camcorder, press the Power ( ) button.

    The camcorder operates the sel-diagnosis unction when poweredon. I a warning message appears, reer to warning indicators andmessages (pages 103~105) and take corrective action.

    SWITCHING TO THE POWER SAVING MODE

    I you need to use camcorder or the extended time, the ollowingunctions enable you to prevent unnecessary energy consumption.

    The power saving mode does not work in the ollowing situations:- When the camcorder has a cable connection. (USB or AV)- While recording, playing back, or the slideshow is being operated.The camcorder consumes less battery power in the power savingmode (about 50% less power than in the standby mode). However,i you plan to use the camcorder or the maximum length o time, werecommend you turn o the camcorder by pressing the Power ( )

    button when not using it.

    USING THE BACK LIGHT BUTTON

    When a subject is lit rom behind, this unction compensates orlighting so that the subject is not too dark.

    Press the Back Light ( )buttonto displaythe ( ) icon on thescreen. To cancel, press the Back Light ( )button again.

    Back lighting influences recording when the subject is darkerthan the background:

    The subject is in ront o a window.The subject is against a snowy background.The subject is outdoors and the background is overcast.The light sources are too bright.The person to be recorded is wearing white or shiny clothes andis placed against a bright background:The persons ace is too dark to distinguish his/her eatures.

    USING THE CONTINUOUS RECORDINGFUNCTION

    Using the Continuous Recording unction when recording video, youcan combine desired scenes into one video ile, and avoid recordiingunwanted scenes.

    1. Press the Recording start/stop button.The recording () indicator appears, and recording starts.

    2. Press Continuous REC button. The recording pauses and the( ) indicator appears.

    To continue the recording, press Continuous REC button.

    Your camcorder can record and save iles no larger than 1.8GB.

    I you are using Continuous Record and you resume recording, andthe recorded ile exceeds 1.8GB, the camcorder will automaticallyrecord to a new ile.I you connect your camcorder to a PC using a USB cable whenrecording is paused, the camcorder will connect to the PC ater itsaves the video it has recorded up to the pause.I you remove the memory card when the camcorder is in Pausemode, it will stop recording and will not save any o the video it hasrecorded.

    SETTING THE TIME ZONE AND DATE/TIMEFOR THE FIRST TIME

    Set the date and time o your local areawhen you turn on this camcorder or theirst time.

    1. Open the LCD screen and press thePower ( ) button to turn on thecamcorder.

    The Time Zone (Home) screenappears centered on London,Lisbon (Greenwich Mean Time).You can also set the Time

    Zone: Home rom the Settings( ) menu. page 82

    2. Select your geographical area withControl (Left/Right) button, thenpress the OK button.

    The Date/Time Set screenappears.

    3. Select the date and time inormation,and change the setting values by using the Control (Up/Down/

    Left/Right) button.To set the daylight saving, press the Control (Left/Right)button to select the ( ) icon, and then press the Control(Up/Down) button to set Daylight Saving on/o.- Activating Daylight Saving orwards the time by 1 hour.

    4. Make sure the clock is correctly set, and then press the OKbutton.

    The year can be set up to 2037.Set Date/Time Display to On. page 84Ater setting, the date and time are automatically recorded on a

    special data area o the storage media.

    Built-in rechargeable battery

    Your camcorder includes a built-in rechargeable battery that retains thedate and time settings even ater the power is turned o.

    Once this battery is depleted, the current date/time values are all resetto deaults, and you need to recharge the built-in rechargeable battery.The date/time must be set again.

    Charging the built-in rechargeable battery

    The built-in battery is always recharged while your camcorder isconnected to the AC power or while the battery is attached. I you donot connect the camcorder to AC power or do not attach the batteryor about two months, the built-in battery ully discharges. I this occurs,charge the built-in battery by connecting to the supplied AC adaptor or24 hours.

    Turning the date and time display on/off

    To switch the date and time display on or o, access the menu andchange the Date/Time Display mode. page 84

    Simple setting of the clock by time difference

    You can easily set the clock to the local time by setting a time dierencewhen using your camcorder abroad. Select "Time Zone" on the menu,then set the time dierence. page 82

    SELECTING THE LANGUAGES

    You can select the language that appears on the LCD screen. Thelanguage setting is retained when the camcorder is powered o.

    1. Press the MENU button Control(Left/Right) button Settings.

    You can record on the built-in memory or a memory card, soyou need to select the desired storage media beore startingrecording or playback.You can use SD and SDHC cards on your camcorder.     To avoid data loss, turn o the camcorder by pressing the Power ( ) button or one second beore inserting or ejecting the memory card.Be careul not to push the memory card too hard. The memory card may suddenly pop out.

    Compatible memory cards

    You can use SD (Secure Digital) and SDHC (Secure Digital HighCapacity) cards with this camcorder. We recommend you usean SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card. This camcordersupports SD cards up to 2GB. We cannot guarantee normaloperation with SD cards bigger than 2GB.

    MMC (Multi Media Card) and MMC Plus are not supported.

    Compatible memory card capacity:SD: 1GB ~ 2GBSDHC: 4GB ~ 32GB

    Use compatible memory card brands. Others are not guaranteedto work. A list o compatible brands is below:- SDHC/SD cards: Panasonic, SanDisk, Toshiba

    For video recording, use a memory card that supports aster writespeeds (above SDHC Class 6 card).

    SD/SDHC memory cards have a mechanical write-protectionswitch. Setting the switch prevents accidental erasure o ilesrecorded on the card. To enable writing, move the switch up in

    the direction o the terminals. To set write protection, move theswitch down.

    SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cardsAn SDHC card is a higher version (Ver. 2.00) o the SD card andsupports capacities above 2GB.SDHC cards cannot be used with current SD enabled hostdevices.

    Handling a memory card

    We recommend that you power o beore inserting or removingthe memory card to avoid data loss.

    We cannot guarantee that you can use memory cards ormattedby other devices. When you ormat a card, be sure to ormat thememory card using this camcorder.You must ormat newly-purchased memory cards, memory cardswith data that your camcorder cannot recognise, and cards withdata saved by other devices. Note that ormatting erases all dataon the memory card.I you cannot use a memory card that has been used with anotherdevice, ormat it with your camcorder. Note that ormattingerases all inormation on the memory card.A memory card has a certain lie span. I you cannot record new

    Use the zoom unction or close-up or wide-anglerecording. This camcorder allows you to recordusing 52x optical power zoom, 65x Intelli-zoomand 2200x digital zoom.

    ZOOMING

    To zoom in

    Slide the Zoom lever towards T (telephoto).(Or press the Control (Up) button on the LCD panel.) The distant subject is gradually magniied.

    The highest optical zoom magniication ratio is 52x.

    To zoom out

    Slide the Zoom lever towards W (wide-angle).(Or press the Control (Down) button on the LCD panel.) The subject gets smaller and urther away.

    The smallest optical zoom ratio is the subjectsoriginal size when zoomed-out.

    Zoom magniication over 65x is done through digital image processing, and is thereore called digital zoom. Digital zooming is possible up to 2200x. Set

    You can view recorded videos and photos in thumbnail index view and play them in various ways. In the thumbnail index view, you candirectly select and display a desired image without using ast orwarding and rewinding.

    This camcorder provides one combined video and photo record mode. You can easily record videos or photos in the same modewithout having to change it.

    CHANGING THE PLAYBACK MODE

    Pressing the MODE button changes the operation mode to Record ( / ) and Play ( ) mode in turn.The recorded videos or photos are displayed in thumbnail index view. Depending on the record mode, recordings are stored in videos orphotos thumbnail index view, respectively. When switching to Play mode ater recording a video, the videos thumbnail index view appears.When switching to Play mode ater recording a photo, the photos thumbnail index view appears.
