Map 34: The Journeys of Elijah

This map again shows the cities visited by Elisha (underlined in orange), but it primarily focuses on the travels of Elijah. Each location is numbered. The travels of Elijah:

1. From Gilead to Samaria. 2. Samaria, where he prophesied to Ahab about a coming three-year drought. 3. From Samaria, he fled to the brook Cherith north of the Dead Sea where he was

miraculously fed by ravens. 4. By divine command, he traveled from the brook Cherith to the Phoenician city of

Zarephath where he raised the widow’s dead son. 5. From Zarephath, he returned to the kingdom Israel where outside the city of Jezreel he

challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to determine who the true God was. 6. Next, he traveled to Mount Carmel where he won the duel. He then killed the prophets of

Baal by the River Kishon at the foot of Mount Carmel. 7. He then ran from Mount Carmel back to Jezreel, about a 25 mile run. Jezebel sought

revenge against Elijah for ordering the prophets of Baal killed. 8. Fearing for his life, he fled from Jezreel across the whole Land of Israel and to the very

southern end of Judah to Beersheba. There, he left his servant and journeyed through the Negev Desert where he had an encounter with the Angel of Jehovah.

9. He was given two pieces of cake before he continued down to Mount Sinai. There, he had his encounter with God and the Shechinah Glory. But the presence of God was not found in the strong wind or the power of an earthquake or a fire, but in a still small voice. God responded to Elijah’s complaint.

10. God then commanded him to return to the wilderness of Damascus to anoint Hazael king of Syria, Jehu king of Israel, and Elisha of Abel Meholah (Abel-meholah) to be the prophet after him.

11. Next, he went to Samaria or at least just outside of Samaria. 12. From there, he traveled to Gilgal, then to 13. Bethel, 14. Jericho, 15. and finally across the Jordan River, where in the sight of Elisha he was caught up or

raptured into Heaven.
