GF Kiwanis goal: Service projects Kiwanis is a global organization of member-volunteers working to change the world one child and one communi- ty at a time. The Kiwanis International motto is “Make a World of Difference.” The local club was founded 94 years ago in 1925. It has approximately 75 members from the greater Glens Falls region. Funds raised at Taste of the North Country are all spent locally. Members have a long history of caring and service. The Club’s goals center around community ser- vice so you’ll find us doing things like assembling tents for a se- nior citizen yard sale, reading to chil- dren at Head Start, “Bowling for Kids’ Sake,” playing Santa and more. In 2020. Club President Mike Du- Bray will be supported by President- Elect Noel Granger, Secretary Patricia Van Buren, Treasurer Tony LaFarr and nine other community leaders who serve on the Board of Directors. We think of Kiwanis as a family that enjoys each other, the comfort of friends, and satisfying work. Our projects and events can take an hour or a few days or even a year — like the “Taste” — to plan and com- plete. It’s fun and we are doing it all to help children and families in Glens Falls and surrounding communities. Kiwanis supports “Key Clubs” in 10 area high schools. where students learn leadership skills and develop the satisfaction of doing for others. The Kiwanis Foundation offers scholarships up to $2,500 per year for 4 years to high school seniors. We invite guests to our lunch pro- grams — they are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at noon at the Queensbury Hotel. Email us at [email protected] for information. Send us a note or even just drop in. We’d love to meet you and introduce you to Kiwanis! The group’s service budget is raised by three major events: The annual Duck Race and Family Festival at Havi- land’s Cove in July, a Golf Tournament in August — and this week’s Taste of the North Country. Thank you for your support! “Taste” typically accounts for half of the club’s fund-raising. That money is distributed to nonprofits, small proj- ects and organizations all year. Also participating! The Kiwanis Club of Glens Falls sup- ports several high school Key Clubs and other affiliated groups, many of which will be participating in this year’s Taste of the North Country • Key Clubs: Supports high school Key Clubs in Fort Ann, Fort Edward, Hartford, Hadley Luzerne, Hudson Falls, Queensbury, Glens Falls, South Glens Falls and Bolton. • Culinary Key Club of the South- ern Adirondack BOCES. • Builder’s Club in Glens Falls and an Aktion Club (for those with disabilities). • Our families! Not only is “Taste” family friendly — it is also an all- hands-on-deck event. We thank the many spouses and family members of Kiwanians who also help to make this year’s event possible. You can join Kiwanis! If you would like to learn more about this dynamic civic organization, please email to [email protected], or at [email protected]. The 27th annual Taste of the North Country food festival returns to City Park in downtown Glens Falls on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Taste has raised about $1,070,000,” in its 26 years to date, says organizer Jerrod Ogden. “It’s really exciting,” Mr. Ogden says. “We have 15 new res- taurants this year, a lot of new things to try.” Mr. Ogden says Taste is about “restau- rants and the commu- nity coming together for a great cause.” For most people, it’s also about sam- pling great food and mingling with neigh- bors. The Kiwanis urge: “Come early for best selection!” The year’s “Taste” showcases food samples from 30 regional restaurants, plus kids’ activities and more by 10 area non-profit and other groups. Neal Orsi- ni’s Anvil Inn has been in it every year. Admission remains at $5 for adults, free for children under age 12, through a sponsorship by Fidelis Care. Food sample coupons cost $1.00 each. Samples are mostly priced from two to five coupons. Discount tix: Purchase a Kiwanis “K- Pack” of 25 sample coupons for just $20, sponsored by the Queensbury Hotel. Purchase food coupons at four ga- zebos, all on Maple Street: At Bay Street by the former Superior Cantina restau- rant, on the sidewalk in the center of Maple, and at Ridge Street (in front of the Queensbury Hotel). The Park: Bay Street is closed between the Civil War Monument and Washington Avenue. Maple Street is closed between Bay and Ridge Streets. Nearly all restau- rants are located on either Bay or Maple Streets, away from City Park. Dining, musical entertainment, chil- dren’s shows and some of the children’s activities and music are all located in the park itself. Taste of the North Country is a complete family festival. Along with the great food, there will be live mu- sic all day by Standing Room Only; chef demos in the Culinary Tent; kid-friendly entertain- ment by Mr. Twisty and Andy the Music Man; a Bouncy Slide and other children’s activities — this year including a travel- ing model railroad setup by Upstate Model Railroaders. Again this year, the Queensbury Hotel offers a Biergarten with local brews out- side on the patio of its Park 26 restaurant (or indoors, if needed). A portion of pro- ceeds benefit the Glens Falls Kiwanis. Also again this year, Taste upgrades its portable bathroom facilities with two high-end trailers from sponsor Stone In- dustries. Each has flushable toilets in pri- vate stalls, and sinks with running water. The festival is on, rain or shine. “Taste” is organized by the Kiwanis Club of Glens Falls. It is supported by 45 generous sponsors (including The Chron- icle, a lead sponsor since Year One). Find all of our sponsors listed on the back of this program.
