How to Write a Diamante Poem WHAT IS A DIAMANTE?
A diamante – pronounced dee-uh-MAHN-tay – is an unrhymed seven-line poem. The beginning and ending lines are the shortest, while the lines in the middle are longer, giving diamante poems a diamond shape. “Diamante” is the Italian word for diamond, so this poetic form is named for this diamond shape. Believe it or not, the diamante was invented just 40 years ago. It was created by an American poet named Iris McClellan Tiedt in 1969, and has become very popular in schools. Also known as a “diamond poem” because of it’s shape, there are two different types of diamantes; synonym diamantes and antonym diamantes. THE RULES OF A DIAMANTE
There are just a few rules to writing a diamante: 1. Diamantes are seven lines long. 2. The first and last lines have just one word.
The second and sixth lines have two words. The third and fifth lines have three words. And the fourth line has four words.
3. Lines 1, 4, and 7 have nouns. Lines 2 and 6 have adjectives. Lines 3 and 5 have verbs.

In a synonym diamante, the nouns at the beginning and end are two words that mean basically the same thing. In an antonym diamante, the two nouns are opposites. Here are a couple of examples:

GETTING STARTED
To start writing a diamante, you first need to decide what thing you want to write about. The reason you want to pick a thing is that your first and last lines need to be nouns. In other words, your diamante will be about a noun, such as a “pencil” or a “pizza,” rather than about a verb, such as “jump” or an adjective like “smelly.” An easy thing to write about is something you like or something you see around you. Next, you’ll want to decide whether you want to write a synonym diamante or an antonym diamante. If you want to write a synonym diamante, you’ll want to select another word that means the same thing as your subject. If you are going to write an antonym diamante, choose a word that is its opposite. For this example, I will show you how to write an antonym diamante about the “sun,” and my second noun is “moon,” since the sun and the moon can be considered opposites.
Once you’ve chosen your two nouns, take a piece of paper and brainstorm as many words as you can that have to do with each of

them. For example, make one column for each word and write down everything you can think of. You’ll want adjectives (descriptive words), verbs (action words), and even more nouns. Your lists should look something like this:

It’s better to have too many words to choose from than not enough. Finally, you’ll want to arrange your diamante, putting the synonyms or antonyms at the top and bottom, the adjectives next, on lines 2 and 6, the verbs after that on lines 3 and 5, and lastly your additional nouns on the middle line. In the top half of the poem – lines 2 and 3 – your adjectives and verbs should be ones from your first brainstorming column – words that have to do with line 1, like this:

In the bottom half of the poem – lines 5 and 6 – your adjectives and verbs should be related to the noun on line 7, like this:

Don’t Wake Up the Bear

A big, soft, warm bear is hibernating for the winter when he is spied by a group of cold animals wishing to share his warmth. One by one the animals cozy up to the sleeping bear. Despite the hare’s warning, “Don’t wake the bear,” a mouse’s sneeze wakes the bear. The animals all scramble because the bear is hungry. All is safe and well as the bear finds berries to eat.

How to Build a Snowman
The next seven pages are illustrations depicting the building of a snowman by a group of people. Run off the pages and shuffle them. Have your learner put them in sequential order and then write about what’s going on in each picture. When they’re done, they will have a book that they can be proud of. Bind it together with the cover on front. There’s a word bank to use in choosing the right word and spelling as they write. Cut it out separately. Have your child read their story to the family. Celebrate their hard work.

Im a penguin. I live in the Antartic where it is very cold. Im a bird but I do not fly. I swim in the oceon to find my food. I use my flipers like wings to help me move undr the water. I also have long, shrp claws to grip the ice and snow. I am an Emperor penguin. We live together in a big groop called a colony.
My mthr and father spend most of the yr apart at sea. In Aprl, when it is time to mate, they come ontoo land. They recognize each othr by their crys. Emperor penguins have very loud vooces. This is important, since they recognize each othr by their vooces, not by sight.
Penguins retorn to the same colony every yr. There are only about 40 coloneys of Emperor penguins in the world, and aboot 400,000 adolts.
When my mthr lays an egg, she give it to my father. He tucks it undr his pouch. Now its time for Mom to go off in surch of food while Dad keeps the egg safe and worm. Fathr penguins don’t eat while the mthrs are away. The egg sits safelie undr its Dads fluffy feathers. Fathr penguins have to move slowly and carfully so they don’t drop the eggs.
Female penguins scoot off to the sea by slidding on their tummies, since this is quiker than walking. They spind the winter feeding in the sea, then return in the spring jest before their egg hashes.
Dad keeps the egg worm for two moonths. Then Mom returns and he give her the egg. The new penguin will be boorn in Moms pooch, while Dad gos to eat.

The new penguin chick uses a hard spot on its beek, called an egg tooth, to pech its way slowly out of the egg. It can take three dais to hatch out.
The chicks downy fathers are soft and worm, but they are not waterproof. Mom helps keep them cleen and fluffy. Moms big toes lift the chick off the frozen ground to keep it worm.
Aftr the chick is boorn, Mom and Dad take turns feding it a keeping it safe and worm. How wood you like spit-up for dinner? The penguin parrents store food in their stomaches and than spit it up for the chick. While the parrents gathr food, the chicks hoodle together in groups called crèches. The chicks only eat about 16 meels in the five months it takes them to grew up. Hoodling togethr keeps the chicks worm. Parents recognise their chick by its cry.
Aftr five moonths, the chick is starting to grew its adolt, waterprof feathrs. This meens itll be able to swim and find its own food. A penguin can be as big as its fathr, but it cant feed itselve yet.
It take the penguin a few weeks to loose its baby feathers and grew adolt feathrs. This is called fledging. Adolt penguins also grew new feathrs each yr as the old one ware out. Once the new penguins have their watrprof feathrs they are reedy to start swimming and hoonting for their own fish diner.
Penguins eat many kind of food, like fish and shellfish, but their favorit foods are squid and small shrimp called krill. The young penguins dive deep by watching othr penguins do the same. When they catch a fish they swollow it hold. Emperor penguins can spind up to 20 minoutes underwater on one breathe.
Here are some fax you may not knew. Penguins can drink booth saltwatr and freshwatr. They have bristles on their tongues that keep slippary seefood from getting aweigh. They also live only in the Soutern hemisphere.

Alliteration
Definition: Alliteration occurs when the poet uses a sequence of words that begin with the same letter or consonant sound. Example: The slithery snake sneaked sideways. Definition: Repetition is when the poet repeats words or phrases to create a rhythm or mood.
Example: The water dripped, dripped, dripped from the leaky faucet.

Onomatopoeia
Definition: Onomatopoeia occurs when the poet chooses words whose sounds make you think of the meanings.

Same Vowel Sounds
Spice up this activity by using the green board or the whiteboard with children for laying down cards. This activity has four sets of words and pictures with the same vowel sound. Provide different directions to work with these.
Match the word cards that have the “i” sound as in chick to the picture cards.
Match the word cards that have the “u” sound as in bus to the picture cards.
Match the word cards that have the “a” sound as in bat to the picture cards.
Match the word cards that have the “e” sound as in hen to the picture cards.
Lay down the bat and can picture cards. Have your child name them. Lay down the duck, pig, hen, and ant picture cards. Ask your child which one has the same “a” sound as in bat and can.
Do the same with other combinations of cards.
Lay down the word cards bus and truck. Have your child read the words. Then lay down the word cards chick, fence, cat, and duck. Have them read the words and match the words with the “u” sound as in bus and truck.
Do the same with other combinations of cards.
Lay down the word cards fence and fish. Point out that although the vowel sounds are the same, the vowel is different. Do the same with hen and chick. Finally do the same with pencil and pig.
After your child is familiar with all of the words and picture cards, shuffle the cards and lay them out in rows. Have them play a game of Concentration. They can either match a word card to a picture card that shares the same vowel sound or they can match the correct word card with the exact picture card. You might want to narrow the selection to make the game easier. For instance, you could use all of the “i” vowel sound cards and all of the “u” vowel sound cards. Gradually increase the number of cards involved.
Use the green board or white board when feasible to add interest to the activity.

Writing Prompts
The following pages are to be used to prompt your learner into writing short paragraphs or stories. They are for all ages and for that reason we have not formatted lines for them. Have your child cut them out and glue them at the top of the paper they normally use. Some of the pictures are to be put in sequential order. The following word bank has been created for their use. Have them cut it out in order for it to be accessible. In order to make the most of each prompt ask your child questions. What is happening in the illustration? What will happen next? What happened before the illustration occurred? What’s a great title? Name your characters. Describe the setting. Describe the weather.
