Hello families,
Safety at the Pedestrian Crossing – There have been a number of recent incidents where students have crossed the road on Mayer Street away from the pedestrian crossing. This is unsafe! We have cross-ing supervisors on duty each morning and each after-noon. When you drop your children off, please tell
them to use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road. Whilst most people are careful and follow the speed limit in school zones, not all do!! Thank you for helping us keep the students safe!
As the Government has stated, it is safe for all the students to be back at school. Safety of all students. Staff, parents and community members is my number one priority. As such, I am limiting the number of adults allowed on school premises for the rest of this school term and will review this for the start of term 3. The following social distancing, movement of adults and hygiene measures continue to apply at Cairns West State School:
All teachers, school staff, parents and students must stay at home if they are sick! If your child becomes sick during the day, please collect them straight away upon receiving a call.
Teachers and school staff must access the school for their work. They must maintain social distancing with all other adults at the school.
Parents are strongly encouraged to drop off their children at the gate and collect their children at the gate
Parents of young children are permitted to take their children to their class, or designated waiting area in the morning, then leave the school grounds straight away.
Parents are not permitted to congregate in the school grounds before school, or in the after-noon waiting for the bell to go.
All classrooms and learning spaces have been equipped with hand sanitiser, soap and paper towel. Staff and students must practice safe personal hygiene at all times. Teachers will be helping students learn this.
Additional cleaning is conducted by cleaners during school hours. This includes high frequency surfaces like door knobs, hand rails and drink taps.
I thank you for your understanding and cooperation are we recommence school for all students. I understand that as parents you are very anxious to ensure that your child is safe whilst in our care. When we work together and follow the above new conditions, everyone will be and feel safe.
Attendance Matters! Coming to school each day is very important for all students. I acknowledge that students may be absent is sick and for sorry business from time to time. A day away from school = a day of learning missed!
The school rules at Cairns West State School are very clearly displayed around the school. At Cairns West we expect all students to:
*Be Safe *Be Respectful *Be a Learner Please speak with your children and explain to them your expectations and to follow these rules. When we work together as parents & teachers we are always successful in this area! Thank you for your partnership!
Until next time, Mike. STUDENT ABSENCE

SAMOAN INDEPENDENCE DAY
On 1 June, Cairns West State School recognised Samoan
Independence Day. With a number of students at Cairns
West identifying with this significant public holiday held
annually in Samoa, a display was constructed in
recognition in the school library.
Samoan Independence Day is celebrated on 1 June every
year as this was the date in 1962 when Samoa achieved
independence from its then governing nation, New Zea-
land. School Leader, Elishama Suavai (pictured), of
Samoan heritage is pictured with the display in the
school’s library recognising Samoan Independence Day.
Our next newsletter will include the school’s recognition
of Tongan Independence Day.
WONGAI TREE
This tree represents the Wongai Tree.
According to Torres Strait Island legend, anyone who eats (kai-kai) the fruit of the Wongai Tree will return to the Torres Strait.
CWSS commemorates Mabo Day—3 June 2020
This day marks the anniversary of the historic Mabo decision. Eddie Mabo of Mer Island spent a decade seeking official recog-nition of his people’s ownership of Mer on 3 June 1992. The High Court of Australia agreed, rejecting the doctrine that Australia was terra nullius (and belonging to no-one) at the time of European settlement.
EDDIE MABO
“His legacy is that through strength of culture and commitment you can achieve anything. People who are fighting for their own native title have to believe in themselves and their culture because that is what will help them succeed.” (Gail Mabo—Eddie Mabo’s daughter)

Anxiety about Going to School
Teach your child to calm them-selves first by concentrating on breathing, counting slowly or using a stress ball
Remind your child to ask the teacher if they need help
Encourage your child to write down or tell you things that they might find challenging during the school day. For each item, you can help them problem-solve how they will manage it
Try to get your child to think positively. For example, get them to consider the following things:
1. What do you like about school?
2. What do you like about yourself?
3. You are brave enough to get through this
4. It is normal to feel this way sometimes but we can’t let it beat us
Praise your child for going to class and remind them of small things they did that helped them cope
Reward your child on successful completion of the school day. The reward can be something small – an ice-cream, getting to watch a favourite TV show, time spent with family, computer time etc Joanne Ambrose—GO
