G O O D N E W S FALL 2016 1
Mr. Charles T. Munger, GSH Chairman, Board of Trustees
Mr. Andrew B. Leeka, GSH President and Chief Executive Offi cer
What an extraordinary year it has been! We give thanks to our generous partners
and members of our Good Samaritan
community for their support throughout
this year.
Our vision for providing
outstanding healthcare in the
future will soon be realized
with the opening of the entire
Medical Pavilion.
The lobby and physician offi ces are
now occupied. Our Radiation Oncology
Department and the Frank R. Seaver
Ambulatory Surgery Center will be
operational in 2017.
Our Mother and Baby Care Campaign is
in full swing and we will soon meet our
goal of raising $3.5 million to offset costs
for the remodel of Labor & Delivery rooms
and for much needed equipment in the
NICU and Maternal Child Department.
These advances to our medical campus
could not have been realized without the
extraordinary support of our physicians,
nurses, staff, benefactors and our
Board of Trustees. We are so grateful
for their continued commitment to
Good Samaritan Hospital.
Of course, we can’t mention our Board
of Trustees without recognizing Susan
Blumenthal. Susan has been a friend
and patron of Good Samaritan for almost
40 years through her contributions as
a member of the Auxiliary, and later as
our Development Chair on the Board
of Trustees. We are grateful for her
dedication, time and contributions to the
Good Samaritan community.
We would also like to thank our team of
physicians, nurses and staff for putting our
patient care fi rst. We recognize one of our
many partners in health, Dr. Rangasamy
Ramanathan. Dr. Ram, as he is fondly
known, is a member of our physician donor
group, Partners In Health. Dr. Ram is one of
over 150 physicians who generously give
back to our hospital community. Thank you
Dr. Ram and all of our members of Partners
In Health for all you do!
The commitment of our Good Samaritan
community is the reason why we can
continue to provide the highest quality
care to all of our patients. We couldn’t do it
without the support and goodness of all of
our members of our Good Samaritan family.
Very truly yours,
Charles T. Munger

n November 2014, the United States Department of
Agriculture, under its Rural Development umbrella, awarded
a $417,560 federal grant to Good Samaritan Hospital. Many
were asking: what is rural about downtown Los Angeles?
Absolutely nothing! However, Good Sam was able to make
the rural case for the island of Guam in a very exciting and
unique partnership.
Located 6,000 miles from Los Angeles, Guam is a U.S.
territory in the Micronesian region of the Western Pacifi c
Ocean. Good Samaritan Hospital has had a strong and lasting
bond with Guam for more than 30 years, providing medical
care to the island and nearby regions. Guam is one of the
most underserved areas where U.S. citizens do not have
access to specialized physicians available on the mainland for
complete medical care. Additionally, almost 30% of islanders
are medically indigent and cannot fi nancially afford to travel off
the island for medical treatment and as a result, Guam’s death
rate is 8.5% higher than the U.S. mainland. It became evident
when an opportunity to provide Telemedicine services for the
residents of Guam that Good Sam could provide a signifi cant
benefi t to the public health community.

specialists in Los Angeles and the
Public Health clinics in Guam.”
Physicians Rachael Cayce, M.D.,
and Soha Dolatabadi, M.D. have
been instrumental as Good Sam’s
fi rst physicians providing medical
services via telemedicine.
Dr. Dolatabadi described the need
for telemedicine perfectly: “One
gentleman from Guam came to
see me last month. His gout had
gone untreated and many of his
bones have been destroyed. He
is not even 40. This could have
been managed. He didn’t have to
suffer this much and then become
disabled. The telemedicine project
will provide a patient with the
opportunity to manage his or her
disease and lead a fuller life.”
Good Sam physicians are currently
providing medical consults with
a Guam Nurse Practitioner out
of the Northern Region Clinic in
Dededo. The Program is expected
to expand telemedicine services
to the Southern Region Clinic in
Inarajan, as well as the smaller,
more remote Public Health sites
in Santa Rita and Tiyan within the
next six months.
Good Samaritan Hospital,
in partnership with Guam’s
Department of Public Health and
Social Services (DPHSS), offi cially
launched the Guam Telemedicine
Program on June 8, 2016. Medical
consultations via telemedic video
workstations have already begun
for dermatology and rheumatology
patients on the island. Leveraged
with the USDA grant, Good Sam
raised an additional $200,000
to purchase and provide high
defi nition cameras, digital
monitors, networking equipment
and electronic diagnostic devices.
Why Public Health? Because nearly
30% of islanders are medically
indigent and the project would
safely and effectively meet the
needs of Guam’s most at-risk
population.
The Program is led by cardiologist
Juan C. Quiros, M.D. and Medical
Director of the Guam Medicine
Referral Program, who has been
traveling to Guam four times a year
himself for nearly two decades
to see patients and work with
on-island health care providers.
Dr. Quiros said during the public
launch: “The telemedicine program

A native of India, his father encouraged him to go to
medical school. Soon after, he trained in a government
hospital where 30,000 babies were born each year. The
hospital lacked the proper medical equipment resulting
in a very high infant mortality rate each year. He recalls,
“Mothers and their babies had to lie on mats on the
fl oor. I really wanted to make a difference.” So Dr. Ram
made the decision to travel to the United States to
study neonatal medicine.

r. Rangasamy Ramanathan (also warmly
known as Dr. Ram), Chief of Neonatology at
Good Samaritan Hospital, knows very well
the true meaning of “generosity of spirit”
and in giving back.
J4783_Magazine Front.indd 9 10/7/16 10:26 AMJ4783_Magazine P.indd 9J4783_Magazine P.indd 9 10/7/16 10:29 AM10/7/16 10:29 AM
In addition to his role as a neonatologist
at Good Samaritan, he is also a Professor
of Pediatrics at the Keck School of
Medicine of USC and, is internationally
renowned in his fi eld. In 1989, he joined
Good Samaritan Hospital and, has hospital
privileges at a half dozen other hospitals
in Southern California. He is the Division
Chief of Neonatology at LAC+USC Medical
Center and directs one of the largest
fellowship programs in neonatology. He
teaches young pediatricians to become the
best neonatologists.
OUR PARTNERS IN HEALTH Dr. Rangasamy Ramanathan
Inspired by his father’s generosity of spirit,
Dr. Ram never fails to give back to the
community. “When I was growing up in
India we had the caste system. We had
untouchables, poor people who would work
on the farm and could not come into the
house. My dad would invite them in and
feed them. He gave me a sense that you
should help.”
Since becoming part of the Good Samaritan
family, Dr. Ram has so generously
supported Good Sam through both
Partners In Health and the Mother and
Baby Care Campaign.
Partners In Health (PIH) is Good Samaritan
Hospital’s physician donor group. Since
its inception, over 150 physicians have
contributed nearly $3.5M to Good Sam
by supporting the hospital’s programs,
services and highly specialized departments
with annual gifts of $1,000 or more. Due to
the commitment of our Partners In Health,
we are able to make a difference in the
lives of our patients and their families at
Good Sam.
Dr. Ram recognizes the importance of
philanthropy and how it positively impacts
our entire Good Samaritan family. “My
wife Prema is very supportive. I am very
comfortable. I have a house, family, two
daughters and two beautiful grandchildren.
God has blessed me. I am here to save and
help babies. I wouldn’t trade this job for
anything.”

who are members of PIH for their continued
dedication to Good Sam! If you would

Susan attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and then returned
to her native Los Angeles. She met her future husband, Jack Blumenthal, on
a blind coffee date in 1963. “It wasn’t a coffee date like today,” she explains,
“he came to the house and picked me up.” She laughs, remembering her fi rst
telephone call from him and telling her mother after hanging up, “He sounds
really nice.” This past September they celebrated 53 years together.
It doesn’t take long after meeting the Blumenthals to realize that they are
both innovative thinkers and true humanitarians. “Her passion has always
been healthcare and mine has always been education,” Jack explains.

Susan continues to choose Good Sam and its physicians
for her own personal care. She is especially fond of her
cardiologist, Dr. David S. Cannom, who has been caring
for her for more than 30 years. Dr. Cannom is the Director
of Cardiology at Good Sam, a world-class cardiologist and
a leader in the treatment of atrial fibrillation or A-Fib.

Jack Blumenthal, like his wife, is a native
Angeleno, and a Bruin through-and-through
receiving his BA, MA and Ph.D. degrees from
UCLA. He was an engineer with aerospace
pioneer and industry giant, TRW for 36 years.
After retiring in 1998, Jack’s deep interest in
education then drew him to teaching. “I thought
I would enjoy teaching high school for a couple
of years.” That was 18 years ago, and he is
still teaching at an all-girls Catholic high school.
“Turned out to be a second career and a good
one…A lot of girls have been brain-washed to
think that they couldn’t do math, which isn’t true
at all. I think they are just as capable in the math
and sciences.” Jack and Susan seem to inspire
each other to constantly look for ways to make a
difference in their community.
Susan’s interest in healthcare coupled with
her determination to make a difference in the
community inspired her to join Good Sam’s
Auxiliary in the late 1970s. In 1984, she was
appointed Auxiliary President. An astute
fundraiser, Susan worked with the other
members of the Auxiliary on the Golden Thimble
project, an annual needlework show raising
hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the
Hospital and its programs. Her passion for Good
Sam and its patients caught the eye of Hospital
leadership, and in 1997, Susan was asked to
join the Board of Trustees. As the Development
Chair of the Board of Trustees, she has been
instrumental in enabling Good Sam to secure
new donations from foundations and motivating
others to support the Hospital.
It was while volunteering with the Auxiliary that
Susan learned about the Hospital’s extraordinary
team of physicians – the source of her more
than 40 years of philanthropic pride and passion
for Good Sam. “I think the doctors on staff in
this Hospital are outstanding. You feel like it is
a family.” She is also moved by the community
Good Sam serves. “From people who live in
Hancock Park to people who live on the street –
they all receive the same outstanding care.”
For these reasons, Susan continues to choose
Good Sam and its physicians for her own personal
care. She is especially fond of her cardiologist,
Dr. David S. Cannom, who has been caring for
her for more than 30 years. Dr. Cannom is the
Director of Cardiology at Good Sam, a world-class
cardiologist and a leader in the treatment of atrial
fi brillation or A-Fib.
It has been almost 40 years since Susan Blumenthal
became a friend of Good Samaritan Hospital. She is
an advocate, visionary and driving force helping to
ensure that the Hospital delivers the highest quality
care to every patient, every time.

LEGACY ernis G. Adams began her career at St. Francis Hospital
in Los Angeles and became chief technologist of the clinical
medical laboratory department. She then joined Clinical
Laboratory Medical Group (CLMG) which provided laboratory
services for hospitals in Los Angeles including Good Sam, and
trained new medical lab technologists (med techs). She became
the Education Coordinator with CLMG and was responsible for the
educational curriculum for lab tech students and the internship program.
Vernis met hundreds of students through the CLMG program, and one of
them was a student by the name of Eileen A. Johnson.
Eileen trained at St. Francis and was hired on as a med tech. Like Vernis,
Eileen loved baseball, dogs and was brilliant in laboratory medicine.
They quickly became very good friends. Eileen spent the last 30 years
of her career at Good Samaritan working in the lab and training med tech
students. She retired shortly before her death at the age of 68 in 2013.
The following year, Vernis passed away at the age of 94.

IMPACT. LEGACY. VISION.
The Heart and Vascular Center at Good Samaritan Hospital has a
longstanding commitment to advancing the science of medicine and
providing outstanding cardiac care. As one of the fi rst hospitals in
America to make groundbreaking therapies available to large numbers
of patients, we have been expanding the boundaries of cardiac care for
decades.
To stay on the cutting edge, our cardiologists need world-class
equipment and facilities to transform heart care and make patient
outcomes that once seemed impossible—routine. Now in the home
stretch, the Campaign for Cardiology is a bold and essential step
forward to substantially increase the capacity and effi ciency of Good
Samaritan Hospital’s already outstanding Heart and Vascular Center for
years to come.
With your help, the Heart and Vascular Center will be home to the best
equipped catheterization and electrophysiology labs in the Los Angeles
area enabling our premier team of cardiologists to deliver unparalleled
levels of care to cardiac patients.
Together we can make the impossible possible for our patients. What will you make possible?
