The early part of the day began well but came to an abrupt pause when Durban-based Lance Cranmer and Durban pilot now Cape Town based, Neil Allen had a mid-air, losing their gliders to the big branchy obis below. aerobatics, it was certainly entertaining watching their pilots putting them through their paces. The final class to fly in the first round was Expert class consisting of six pilots, with the competitors at the top of the class pushing for seamless manoeuvres with Louis Genade and Christo Le Roux neck-and-neck. A total of two rounds were flown on the first day, followed by the most welcome “tea time” after a long day baking in the sun.

With the Cape weather being so unpredictable, we were only too happy to welcome the brisk wind out of the south east upon our arrival at the slope on Sunday morning, and guess what? It was set to be that way for the rest of the day. If I am not mistaken, this is only the second year in the history of the competition that a full weekend event was able to be held, and what an event it was! Another round of flying took place in the morning to seal the scores and positions of our weekend toils. Prize giving was held just after lunch at Dixies Restaurant. With all the scores tallied up and all checks having been done, it was time to unveil the results.

A big thank you goes out to the judges of the event, Bob, Stuart, and Andrew, it would not have happened without you! Thanks!

Another goes out to our sponsors for the donations of money, prizes, trophies, and bags; you guys certainly filled the goodie bags and your generosity is certainly appreciated by the Two Oceans Slope Soarers.

Well done to all who took part, we hope to see you back next year. For more info about the event, visit www.toss.co.za

organisation in a positive and constructive matter. This is the official forum for interaction, and all objective contributions are highly appreciated. I would like to remind all that on the evening, no items will be added to the agenda, so all items of importance must be forwarded to the SAMAA office no later than Wednesday 23 March 2016.

The next very important event will be our Combined Power Nationals that is possibly the biggest event of the year for SAMAA. It will be hosted at the PC Pelser Aerodrome in Klerksdorp from 23 to 26 April 2016. I hope that the event will enjoy the support of our members and build on the huge success of last year. All details and entry forms are published in this newsletter. Thank you to Dean Grobbelaar and Aerial Concepts for being the key sponsor.

The newly-nominated SAMAA Management Committee had their inaugural meeting on 26 January 2016 and I can report that all the members are enthusiastic and keen to take the SAMAA forward in the interests of all aeromodellers. The SMC has shifted their focus a lot more towards interaction with clubs, and our new club representative, Boet Denysschen, has already visited five clubs since the beginning of the year. Our General Manager, Bob Skinner, has also been out and about attending events and visiting clubs, and so has our outgoing development officer, Ludwig Steyn.

Thank you to all of them for their sacrifice of personal time to represent the SAMAA. The new committee will be ratified at the 2016 AGM.

Some members of the SAMAA management are currently interviewing possible candidates for the position of assistant to the General Manager. I hope that this process will be concluded before the AGM so that we can introduce the successful applicant.

I also would like to thank Herman Weber who served as SIG Chair over the last two years. Herman has resigned as he has shifted his focus to other interests. The position of SIG Chair is currently vacant, and any queries can be channelled to either the General Manager or me.

Recently, RAASA communicated with the SAMAA management that they received an anonymous complaint that certain clubs operate without the presence of a safety officer. I personally find it very difficult to respond to such allegations when there are no details, and the complainant insists to remain anonymous. Unfortunately, we are obliged to respond to such communication, and I would like to remind every member, flying at every club, that no flying should take place without a safety officer present at a club.

Practically, this does not work very well. Therefore, all club chairmen should communicate with their members that all club members are assistant safety officers. The first member arriving at the club becomes the designated safety officer until a committee member or the duly elected safety officer relieves him/her of their duty.

Safety at a club is not negotiable, and most clubs underwrite our safety code, but there are some that could improve on this count. I would like to ask all members to always put safety first as we cannot afford to be branded as careless and negligent of the safety of others.

Apropos a recent incident, I would also like to remind all our members that in the event of an accident or incident involving a full-size aircraft and a model aircraft, the incident must be reported immediately to the SAMAA office. Failing to do so actually constitutes a criminal offence. It does not matter how negligible the incident or accident is; it must be reported.

Please remember that if you plan to host a “Fly-in” or a Special Air Event, to contact the SAMAA office well in advance, as in some cases special permission has to be obtained, NOTAM's published, and in some cases Height Alleviation applied for and obtained. It can involve up to four different institutions to obtain such permission, and a lead time in excess of 150 days could be applicable in cases where there is a change to airspace.

The work on our new website has been completed and the website was launched recently. Please visit the website and give us some feedback. This is just the start and we plan to add many more useful features. The most important factor is that it is managed from the SAMAA office and all information can be updated instantly. I would like to thank John Godwin for all

Dear members

The year started off at an incredibly fast pace with many competitive and social events having already taken place in the first quarter.

Two of the biggest events will take place in the next few weeks. The first of which is our AGM, on 31 March 2016. This date has extensively been advertised previously. I would like to invite all members to attend and contribute to our fantastic

the years that he maintained and supported the previous site. John, your dedication to the SAMAA is highly appreciated.

I believe it would be appropriate to congratulate Mr Johan Ehlers on his nomination as Chairman of the CIAM F4 Scale Sub-committee. He is already representing South Africa at the annual plenary meetings as the South African delegate, and will now also attend the CIAM Bureau meetings in Lausanne, Switzerland. Mr Ehlers was also appointed as the Chief Static Judge at this year's F4 Scale World Championships in Romania. Well done, Johan!

As this is the first newsletter of the year, I would like to wish all of you a prosperous and successful year and I hope that you will have many happy hours next to the flying fields. Always make safety a priority.

Best regards, Marthinus

From the officeA wise friend of mine maintained that there are two things in one’s life that may be considered traumatic: divorce, and house moving or house alterations. I suppose there could be many more cases, but my family and I spent the last few months living with dust, noise, grit, building material, rubble, inspectors, and a building crew that arrived early each morning. Thankfully, it was all worth the effort, but now comes the final finishing, hanging doors, and doing the touch-up work the way I want it done. In time, we will tackle the landscaping of the garden again and re-plant

or re-pot many of the plants we removed. The lawn will re-grow, I suppose! In a way, the project was not unlike model building: planning, buying materials, crafting, and enjoying the final product.

Proficiency tests (more accurately, qualifications)Members must please bear with me; the proficiencies have been captured on the membership programme, and the certificates, badges, and new membership cards will be posted soon. What’s that word, “posted”? It means putting a bunch of envelopes, with stamps, with last-known addresses, into the ubiquitous red pillar post box. Where previously there was some expectation that someone will receive an envelope with excitement, there is only the knowledge that there has been a complete breakdown of trust.

The red pillar box has become a bottomless pit, with millions of postal articles clogging the sapo hubs and distribution centres, where striking workers and morally corrupt individuals of this once-proud establishment, have effectively killed off a going concern. Strong words, you may say, but I cannot begin to describe the frustration I’m experiencing, with many members complaining that they have not received their membership cards. Adding to my already heavy workload, I now print a replacement card, scan it, and e-mail it to the affected member. Ironically, the replacement gets “posted”...that foreign concept again!

Lately, I’ve had a few proficiency tests where the member being tested has lapsed his SAMAA membership. It is a condition of being tested, that you are at least a member of the Association. Then I’ve also had cases where the examiner has not been a member of the SAMAA.

Ironically, a member with lapsed membership, flying at a registered SAMAA club, being tested by senior members of the club, poses a significant risk, not in flying skill, but the fact that the member is not covered by insurance. Club managements have a duty to ensure that their members conduct their activities in safety, and that they are paid-up SAMAA members, who will be covered by insurance should there be an accident or incident. It is dead-easy for club administrators to check on the SAMAA-status of the members flying at their club; get in touch with me at the office, and I will assign administrator rights to you, and you’ll be able to accurately check on the details of the members that have indicated they belong to your club.

ID numbers, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!I’ve had a torrid time in the last few months, with trying to renew membership where a member has not supplied an ID number. These cases are marked on the statement, and we have to return at a later stage, and telephone or e-mail the member to obtain this information. Sometimes we’ve had to use social media to contact a member, where there has been no response to telephone messages. Members may of course use their log-in and passwords to visit the membership site, and maintain their own details. Visit www.samaa.co.za, and log in. If you are unsure whether you have a log-in name and password, scroll down to this section on the front page, and type in your e-mail address. You will receive an automated e-mail message with log-in and password.

Special Air EventsQuite often, clubs will arrange for events that are not simple fly-ins or social events. Usually this is planned to take place at a registered or licenced full-size aerodrome, and permission is required, firstly from the landowner or airport operator, and secondly from SAMAA and the authorities (RAASA/CAA/ATNS), for the airspace that is going to be used or shared with other users of the air.

We recently experienced a problem with an application for an event at a full-size aerodrome that by-passed the system, and Pierre Laubscher, Operations Manager at RAASA, provided this information:

Where there is a change of airspace and an application for a Special Air Event, the application needs to reach RAASA no less than 150 days before the event, since it has to be passed through the AIRAC-cycle for approval. In the case where there is no change to airspace for a Special Air Event, and only a NOTAM is required, an application may be submitted to RAASA no less than 30 days prior to the scheduled event.

Obviously the request is lodged with the SAMAA firstly, with information on the details, scope, and activities of the planned event, and all the supporting documentation, like sketches or maps of the layout of the site, the runway, pit area, flight lines, parking, spectators, no-fly zones, and an area where the emergency services are located. Also a basic safety plan: what happens if there is a fire? What happens if a full-size aircraft has an emergency and has to land? How is this communicated to the modellers on the ground? Is there an adequate safety margin, and an assembly point?

Please note that the RAASA lead times as stated above will have to be longer since the application has to be considered first by the SAMAA compliance sub-committee (Johan Groenewald) before being lodged with RAASA.

If the event is a simple fly-in for SAMAA members only, with no displays, and no spectators, (i.e. not a public event), RAASA assists with a NOTAM, provided the application is received by RAASA more than 30 days before the event. This requires an application form with all the relevant supporting documentation and plans, including landowners permission, a local authorities letter of approval (depending on who the airfield belongs to). If there are full-size operations, RAASA will require a letter of consent, in that other airfield users have been consulted, and have no objections to the event taking place.

2016 SAMAA Annual General Meeting

The 2016 AGM of the SAMAA has been advertised extensively, since 2015 already, and there ought to be no excuse for any member to say he did not know of the AGM. The date is Thursday 31st March 2016, at 18:00, at the SAMAA office in Bonaero Park. Denel Tea Room, Denel Technical Academy, Building R4, 131 Atlas Road. The agenda, and the agenda appears elswehere in this issue. Please get in touch with Bob Skinner if you need a map with directions to the meeting. The GPS coordinates are S26 08 41 and E028 16 01.

This is the opportunity where every member can air his views, and also to meet the new management committee members in person. Please make every effort to attend. If a member wishes to place a matter on the agenda, the notice of this has to reach the chairman seven days before the meeting.

2016 Aerial Concepts Combined SAMAA Power NationalsDean Grobbelaar and Aerial Concepts have sponsored this highlight of our competitive year, and we express our gratitude for the sponsorship. This year there are nine disciplines competing, and the Aerial Concepts sponsorship has allowed the organisers to keep the entry fee at a realistic level.

Please enter for this great event, not just in your primary discipline, but also in other disciplines and classes. Venue: PC Pelser Aerodrome, Klerksdorp. Dates: 23 to 26 April 2016. If you need more information, Bulletin 1 is published in this newsletter, and is available in MS Word. Contact Bob Skinner, and request this, and the entry form (live, fillable MS Word form).

New SAMAA WebsiteThe new SAMAA website is now live, and my personal thanks to Marthinus Potgieter and Helena Immelman for spending their valuable time in getting this project to fruition. Marthinus has already thanked John Godwin for his tireless efforts in maintaining our old website, and I too add my thanks to John for his efforts.

Boet Denysschen and I have been assigned administrators rights, and we will keep the site updated with regular news, photos, events, etc. Visit www.samaa.org.za.

25 Years of Fun Fly Masters

In 2015 the top 17 pilots in the Fun Fly National Series made the annual pilgrimage to the Free State to be part of two days of hard-fought competition to decide the winners in the three classes, Masters, Sportsman, and Veteran.

Fun Fly has evolved over the years in many ways. In the early days competitors would fly with a variety of Stik-type models and there was only one class. Naturally, special planes including the Shotgun were developed and these ultra light, highly-manoeuvrable aircraft could take-off, perform (for example) three loops, three rolls, and three “touch-and-go's” in under 20 seconds! This led to a Sportsman Class being introduced, to enable more pilots to feel their feet and use more conventional planes. During 25 years some of the regular pilots obviously became older and found it not so easy to compete with the “top guns” and a third, “Veteran” Class was formed in 2014.

Christopher Harris made a welcome return to competition flying at the end of th2015 when he competed in the 25 Fun Fly Masters, which was held at

Welkom Model Aircraft Club. After a break of three years, Christopher won his th9 title with an excellent display of flying in the thirteen different events, which

the Fun Fly Series is famous for.

At the 2015 Masters of which twenty two have been held in Welkom, there were seven Masters Class pilots, eight Sportsman Class pilots and two Veteran's Class pilots.,

Like the planes, the events have also evolved over the years, even to the point that many are performed “dead stick”. For example “perform one loop, four vertical rolls, one bunt, one loop and land on the runway” (all after only an eight second climb!) The top pilots do this in an incredible 30 seconds! Another event is “take off, climb for two seconds, prop hang for four seconds, climb for six seconds, cut motor, do one loop, one bunt and then glide (without motor) for as long as possible”. The winning time was 156 seconds.

Every year there is always the “Limbo”, upright or inverted and of course “touch and go's”. In 2015 the “touch and go's” were “before the line”. It takes an immense amount of flying skill to do eleven “touch and go's” in the allocated time of sixty seconds, which the winner of the event did.

Most other events are combinations of looping and rolling manoeuvres, always against the clock, some with motor running and some with motor cut and of course the pilots have to land on the runway which is not always as easy as it sounds, especially with no motor and in 25 kilometre/hour winds.

In the Masters class, Christopher Harris took the lead on Event 2 with 192 points, second was Riaan Van Wyk on 190, and third was Christopher Johnson on 170 points. Christopher “H” continued to extend his lead throughout the competition to finish on 1190 points out of a maximum 1300 points. Second, third, fourth, and fifth however swapped places many times after nine events had been run. By using his experience, Christopher Johnson managed to edge into second after ten events and then it was up to Matthew Hirst and Roston Dugmore to battle it out for the third spot on the

podium. Roston tried too hard on the limbo and that gave third place to Nationals regular since the 1990's, Matthew.

In Sportsman Class, Daniel Finch took the early lead after Event 1, with Marius Botha, and Jumbo Berry close behind. However Kevin Hirst won Event 2, which put him into the lead of the Sportsman Class, a lead that he was to keep until the end. Second and third places chopped and changed between Daniel and Jumbo with Daniel in the end securing the second spot.

In the Veteran Class there were two regular pilots and Anton Van Wyk took the win ahead of Ernst van der Toorn. The Veteran's Class fly the same events as the Masters Class, and in fact Anton flew so well that he would have finished sixth had he been in the Masters Class.

All in all another brilliantly organised Fun Fly Masters by Anton Van Wyk and his team at WMAC and a big thanks go to all those that helped organise and run the event as well as all the sponsors.

I have once again been asked to become Gauteng delegate, so if there is anyone or any club interested in participating in the Fun Fly Series please contact me on 011-849-6267/076-494-1184/ , or [email protected] contact Anton Van Wyk on 057-352-9012/082-554-2390/ [email protected] .

and some time will be spent with the chairman and the members. If time permits, I will have a flight or two and even a braai after each club visit, and a report will follow in SAMAA News, giving readers some news about the club and its facilities.

If a club would like a SAMAA committee member to visit their club for a special event or fly-in, please forward a request in writing to the SAMAA office. Photos of all visited clubs will be up-loaded under Gallery on the new SAMAA website, as well as an article with a brief overview of the clubs activities will be published in the next available SAMAA news. Please visit the new SAMAA web page where you can view photos as well as reports of clubs visited recently (under News and Gallery). If a club which has not been visited wants to have some photos of their facilities uploaded on the website you can forward this to me. [email protected]

The main aim with this is to give all clubs a bit of exposure and to give the members throughout the country a bit of insight of what other clubs have got to offer and how active they are, and what they do.

Club visitsCors-Air, Pretoria EastOn the weekend of the 30 and 31st January, I visited Cors-Air for a camp and fly weekend. Cors-Air is on the eastern side of Pretoria on the Bapsfontein road. They have excellent facilities, both camping and flying, providing opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a day or weekend outing. All types of aircraft can successfully be flown at Cors-Air. The field is open on most sides except for a few invader black Wattle trees encroaching on the southern side. Corrie is in the process of taking care of this.

The safety at the club is like many clubs I have been to, in that it can do with a bit of taking care of, especially in start up procedure as well as taxiing in and out of the pit area.

Cors-Air was established in 2011 by Corrie Coetzee owner of the farm. He built this field on his farm because there is no proper place with decent facilities where he could take his family. We have proper tar runways 300m long and 15m wide, with mowed grass surrounding the field. The pit area is concreted and under shade net, equipped with electricity points and concrete assembly tables. Flying normally takes place on weekends but we do have various groups flying during the week. Various SAMAA SIGs have made use of our facilities for hosting monthly competitions.

There are camping facilities around our dam which we use for float flying, boating, or fishing. Our restroom facilities for men and women are very neat with showers in each, with hot and cold running water and lighting. We had a couple of successful camping weekends but would like to make it bigger and get more of our RC friends to visit us. A small fee is charged for camping. There is a very big lapa where the planes can be stored during the evening. In front of the lapa are concrete tables and chairs as well as a large braai area . This area is mainly used for the families to sit and relax in the shade.

Cors-Air is a privately owned club with no committee or politics. We are a SAMAA-registered club and adhere strictly to SAMAA safety rules like any other club. Club membership is open for applicants to apply. Day visitors are also welcome and a landing fee will be charged. At Cors-Air we want you to come and enjoy safe flying and make good friends. It looks like an air show on busy weekends at Cors -Air because the variety of planes that normally fly here you will see at big air shows and fly-ins. Cors-Air is situated on the R51 Bapsfontein road where it meets the Lynwood Road, on the eastern side of Pretoria. S25°56' 04" E028°29'30" Website: www.cors-air.co.za

Bloemfontein club visitsOn the weekend of the 6/7th February I travelled to Bloemfontein to visit four of the five active clubs in Bloemfontein. The clubs are relatively close to each other and all are situated on the western and southern side of Bloem. None of the clubs have a very big membership, with Central Radio Flyers having the most members, possibly more than all the other clubs put together.

Flyzone Central is situated 20km out of town, due south on the Reddersburg road. This club is mainly used for jet flying as it has two 180m tar runways.

Central Radio Flyers has two excellent tar runways, recently resurfaced by the local municipality. The club has no shade over the pit area but has built a clubhouse with ablutions out of shipping containers. They are seriously plagued by theft and vandalism and always have to introduce new measures to stay ahead of the vandals.

Langenhoven Park Flyers is situated on the western side of the N1, adjacent to the suburb Langenhoven Park. There are Eskom power lines between the field and the N1 so this stops the pilots from flying to the far eastern side. On the northern side is a road next to the suburb which is a no- fly zone. They have the bare minimum facilities but they are there to have fun and they surely do.

Bloemfontein Model Aircraft Club is situated on the south-western side of Bloemfontein, a lot further away from the N1. The club has very nice facilities, two tar runways, shaded pit area, a large entertainment area, toilets, irrigation, but very few members. What a nice bunch of happy modellers.

Kelly’s View Aeromodellers is on the western side a few km from the N1. They have a very large flat piece of ground with two cross runways. The runway and the outfield is in a sad state due to the serious drought but in spite of this, still suitable to fly on. The members are out flying mostly on Sundays and traditionally in the late afternoons, it is time for a braai.

I have made myself available for election to the SAMAA management committee, and until the AGM on 31 March, I have been co-opted onto the committee to serve the SAMAA membership for the next two years as the club representative.

I will be making arrangements with the chairpersons of various clubs throughout South Africa in the months to come. Clubs will be visited

Flyzone Central, Bloemfontein southFlyzone central, founded about six years ago, is situated on farm land which is leased by the club. All facilities on the field were paid for by the club. Current chairman is Steven Baartman, and vice-chairman is Theo Potgieter, and for both of them, it is their first year in these positions.

At the moment, the club has 14 paid up members and all are very active. The club is situated 20km on the southern side of Bloem on the Reddersburg road. In the past, the club has hosted various annual fly-ins which were very popular with pilots from various areas of the country. The committee is planning on hosting another one of these fly-ins in due course. Watch the press for details. The club boasts two 180m tar runways, toilets with showers, braai facilities, so all friends and families are welcome to come and enjoy a day with them. All types of RC planes are flown regularly at the field.

Langenhoven Park Flyers operates from a public open entertainment area adjacent to the suburb of Langenhoven Park. It is suited for all types of aircraft and is not a “park flyer club”. The club has 18 members, of which ten are regularly active. There is no chairman or committee but the caretaker and contact person is Piet Groenewald, cell no 082-646-0818 or email [email protected].

Currently the premises has no toilets, running water, or shade, and the pit area consists of large cable drums which serve as working tables. The club is situated on the western side of the N1, and south of Langenhoven Park –

o oS29 06' 46" E26 09' 30"

Runway consists of two gravel runways, main runway 230m and at 90 degrees, a secondary runway of 130m.

The club is not active in any form of organised events and due to the manpower and location of the club, it will stay the way it is. All types of aircraft and helicopters are flown at the club during the week and weekends. Day visitors are welcome and the club is open to all SAMAA members at all times.

Central Radio FlyersCurrent Chairman is Hansie Peens who is in this position for the last three months as he has taken over from Wynand Swart who has served on this committee for many years. Vice chairman is Johan Els.

Central Radio Flyers CRF co-ordinates is 29 11' 25.65”S and 26 11' 47.62”E. The club is situated on the eastern side of the N1 between Curie Avenue and the M30 turn-off near Sydenham.

The club has 40 paid-up members of which 20 are active. The club has a clubhouse made from shipping containers joined together, which consists of a large open area, a storage area, as well as male and female toilets. It has running water as well as temporary lights which are operated from a battery and inverter unit. Our clubhouse is not the best but our runways are the best in Bloemfontein. Two high quality tar runways 162m x 8m at 90-degrees to each other with a 35 x 35m square in the middle. The club layout can be viewed on Google Earth.

We have in the past organised pylon competitions, Free State Aerobatic champs, ops Winter Eagle, Fun fly's, as well as Large scale competitions. Bloemfontein is located very central to all other parts of the country so we want to organise more events in the coming year to attract modellers from all over the country. We fly all types of aircraft ranging from .4cc up to 150cc planes, pattern planes, gliders, jets, turbine helicopters, aerobatic ,large scale, Warbirds, as well as old-timers.

We are a competition-orientated club; many of our members have attended various SAMAA-organised competitions throughout the country with some achieving very high placings. We do have a full range of instructors as well as judges, and perform proficiency ratings on a monthly basis. Day visitors are allowed and welcome. Hansie Peens may be contacted on 082-448-4800.

Kelly’s View AeromodellersThe chairman is Andries du Plooy, contact no: 084-580-1497, and hehas been in the chair for five years, since2010. Andre Geyer has served the sameperiod as vice-chairman. His contact is 082-773-9287.

The club is 20 members strong with 12 members flying actively each Sunday. Our clubhouse facilities boast municipal water, toilets, a solar panel with an inverter for 220v lights and a sound system, a 12v fridge, and gas stove. The pit area consists of five 2.5m x 2.5m tables with integrated 3m x 3m zinc roof, an elevated under-roof spectator and entertainment area on top the clubhouse, four starting and repair tables, and the pit area, clubhouse and entertainment area is protected by wrap-around wooden fence. There are ten 1.5m x 1.5m cement ground slabs interlaced in the pit area.

The club is situated in the Bloemfontein Kelly’s View municipal area just off the N8 going to Kimberley. The route to the club is as follows: Take the Walter Sisulu road turn-off from the N1. Drive 5.1km's on the N8 towards Kimberley and turn left at the Kelly’s View board. Turn right immediately and follow the road for 1.7km's until the railway crossing, cross the railway intersection, turn left and follow the Kelly’s View Aeromodellers signs.

Our runways are grass, and the main runway is in the east west direction and120m x 5m. The secondary runway on the right hand side of the club is in the south-westerly direction and 100m x 5m. Chopper and glider runway on the left side of the club 80m x 20m.

Events that were organised at Kelly’s View Aeromodellers in the past, were pylon racing competitions as well as interclub fun fly competitions. This club is still a relatively young club that has grown quite a lot in the past few years. A lot was established in the past five years since Andries has been in the chair and you will find that the club has grown quite a bit in terms of what was achieved with the upgrading of club facilities, pit area, and runways. This was all done with the help of club members who are very dedicated and passionate modellers. Two years back the club took the trophy for the club with the best “gees” at one of the local fly-in events showing the character of our club members.

All of our club money is ploughed back into the club to upgrade the facilities so that we can give our club members the best flying experience. Another idea behind this is to get the club to a high standard so that it will be able host major events like glider, FPV racing, helicopter, pylon racing, pattern, large scale aerobatics or fun fly events. This club has excellent potential to have such events because we are close to the N1 highway, local businesses, and overnight facilities. The club has an excellent wide open flat field area, making it great for any type of RC flying. It is also an excellent area for those for those glider-guiders. You will find awesome thermal activities during the warm summer days at the field, and therefore most of the club members will always have an electric glider in the boot of their cars for these type of days. Pattern or aerobatic pilots will also enjoy our unbroken horizon line to practice their flying skills to prepare them for competitions.

We regularly fly the following aircraft at the club: electric, gliders (electric, non-electric and DLG), scale, IC all types, combat, pylon racers, drones, large scale aerobatic aircraft, and slope soarers (at Botshabelo).

At this stage our club members are not active competitive pilots as we are still a young club, but this will hopefully change in the nearby future. All visitors and SAMAA-registered pilots are welcome to come and fly or visit with us at any time. Just remember to bring your own meat, for that late-afternoon braai, and socialising with a great group of guys and ladies at our club.

Covered pit areas at Kelly’s View Aeromodellers are a real asset to the club.

The future of Kelly’s View Aeromodellers is looking bright, and with the help of SAMAA and our club members, we will strive to become one of the best model flying clubs in South Africa.

Bloemfontein Model Aircraft ClubOur chairman is Herman Groenewald, contact076-600-2589 (all hours), and 084-584-0110(after hours). E-mail is [email protected]

Herman has served as chairman of BMAC the past three years. Our vice-chairman is Ben Vermeulen. We have 10 active members, ranging from 12 years old up to pensioners.

We have a clubhouse, equipped with wash facilities and two toilets and running water. In the front of the club house we have a big under-roof area that we use for braai and socializing. We have big tables for our planes that are covered with shade ports. Our club is situated on the Jagersfontein road, 12 kilometers from the traffic light at the Windmill Casino on the left-hand side. We have two cross runways, 200m long each and 5m wide.

In the past we staged a cross-country event that consisted of taking-off from Jagersfontein, and flying back to BMAC over a distance of 80km. We also organised weekend events where we start flying on the Saturdays, and then stay overnight by camping, and then do some night flying. Early on Sunday morning we start flying, and then have a nice breakfast together. For lunch time we have a family braai.

We would like to attract more members to our club, and would like to get more interaction with the other clubs and get-togethers. All kinds of aircraft are flown at our club, from small electric, to large scale gas planes. We are not competition orientated, mostly a social flying club. Day visitors are very welcome and there are no access fees.

Large Scale Aerobatics 2016 so far

So far LSA in Gauteng has been relatively active in 2016.

Introductory event, Irene Radio FlyersWe started off the year with an introduction day at Irene Radio Flyers on the 24th of January. The purpose of this event was to get new guys into LSA and show them the basics, and help them get started. The turnout was great with a total of 20 guys coming to see what it's all about, some traveling from as far as Krugersdorp and even Polokwane to join us. The event started at 8am with a long discussion about the basics of LSA, but by about 10am the guys looked eager to get their planes in the air and give it a go, so we had Roland (who is a regular LSA competitor) to fly a quick demo of the Basic and Sportsman sequences, so that everyone present had an idea of what the sequences looked like.

Finally it was their turn. We had some of the more experienced LSA competitors help out and give the newcomers some tips. We also helped out with some trimming and set-up issues that some guys were having. Towards to end of the day we were watching some impressive flying, so we lit the braai fires to end off a successful day. Many thanks to Irene Radio Flyers and Johnny Foonk for letting us use the club and to the regular LSA members who helped out.

Competition no 1. Barnstormers 7 February 2016The introduction event was not all that happened in 2016 so far. On the 7th of February LSA had it's first monthly competition of the year hosted at the Barnstormers Kempton Park. It was the LSA AGM as well. The turn-out was again good with nine pilots flying, of which four were new to LSA. There were also several other members who came to watch and attend the AGM. The day started off early with some pilots arriving to set up their planes as early as 06:30. The pilot briefing started just before 08:00 and shortly thereafter the flying got underway. Unfortunately the flying did not get off to a great start with two competitors having accidents within the first hour. However this did not let our spirits down and we continued flying with no more incidents for the rest of

the day. At about 12:00 we were done flying, so the scoring was done and we got started with the Annual General Meeting. The main purpose of the AGM was to select a new committee for the LSA. The new committee plans to carry LSA forward and take LSA to higher levels.

Thanks to Roland Suhrmuller and Barnstormers for letting us use the field. Thanks Brett Black and Gavin Walton for judging; to Jacques Alberts for calling for the judges and to Owen Vuyk for doing the scoring.

It is not often that one finds, while visiting a club, a 100% turnout of members to meet and greet you, but that’s exactly what I found Saturday 31 January at the Beaufort West RC club. The club is situated about 4 kilo's north of the (very hot and very dry) Karoo town of Beaufort West. The current chairman, Wouter Vorster is also the safety officer and sole member of the club.

Wouter met us at the guesthouse we stayed in. We had a chat about local conditions and I followed him to their club facilities. It is on the rifle range just outside of town and consists of a large open piece of ground that is absolutely flat (then again, the whole surrounding area is absolutely flat). In the centre of the runway is a small square slab of concrete... the heli runway! Actually the runway is not a runway, it is a circular piece of flat ground, so take-off and landings can happen in any direction (but NEVER over the rifle range, which is behind the pit area, for obvious reasons...the rifle club love to practice on moving targets).

During our discussions it became clear that there is a large interest in modelling in the Beaufort West area but the perception is that it is a very expensive hobby. One possible reason could be that Wouter flies a large petrol engine plane and his heli is also quite big (thus expensive). Wouter suggested that we, (SAMAA) help with arrangements to have a fly-in and get various clubs to participate and also have some inexpensive models and trainers to fly. A certain crowd-puller will be if we can arrange for a number of turbine jets to 'light up the sky'. I mentioned to Wouter that jets will not work on the dusty and fairly loose sandy surface of their club and asked if there is not a full-size flying field nearby.

Well, actually, there is and it is not only a full-size field, it is also one of the

most active training fields in SA. They are in the process to finish yet another hangar and have a 1700 metre runway that is beautifully tarred and lovely smooth.

I took leave of Wouter with the undertaking that I will see what can be worked out regarding a fly-in. I drove over to the Beaufort West flying field and was happy to meet Ronnie Jonsson FIFA Club and Field Manager. We discussed the RC club problem and I asked if it would be possible to have a fly-in at their field. To my delight, Ronnie immediately agreed and came with a counter offer. Could we participate in their fly-in and fly our models and jets on the weekend of their grand opening of the new hangar. They are inviting pilots from all over SA to attend and we are most welcome to participate.

There is a guesthouse on the field and several camping sites in close proximity to the field. The town, about 10 kilo's away, has an abundance of guest houses and would gladly offer their hospitality to us. The date of the fly-in is not yet determined as they are awaiting confirmation of exactly when the hangar will be ready to hand over to the club but it should be in the second part of March or the beginning of April 2016. That is a few weeks from now! On my return to the Strand I contacted Michael Basson and discussed the possibility of his help in organising the event and getting pilots from other clubs to attend. I have his undertaking and he will start the ball rolling as soon as we have the go ahead from the SAMAA SMC.

I feel that it would be a perfect opportunity for the SAMAA Club Rep, Boet Denysschen to attend and lend his expertise in the organisation and participation of the northern clubs. Between Michael and myself, we will see what we can come up with from the Western Cape. (Oudtshoorn is a mere hour's drive from Beaufort West).

I feel that Daniel Ralefeta could be of invaluable help by promoting some form of Transformation workshop in the local community and bring some of the youngsters in touch with the wonderful world of aeromodelling.

Besides the help in the logistics of such an event, we will need finance from SAMAA. I am not talking of thousands of Rands, but we are going to need some sort of incentive for the participating clubs and their members. I was thinking of a SAMAA windsock to the clubs and some sort of certificate to the pilots. Bob Skinner is the name that comes to mind in this instance. Boet's traveling expenses and accommodation, as well as mine, needs to be addressed. In conclusion, I need to get the okay from the SMC before I can do anything else. If the SMC agrees, I can start in earnest and I will then contact Boet and we can work things out.

2015 Highveld Thermal League reviewReport by Jan Sime. Photos by Helena Olwage, Eloff Maré, and Derek Marusich.

The last contest of the current Thermal League competitions was held on 29 November 2015. As every year, this was held at Heidelberg on a grassy field overlooking the N3 and the railroad to KZN. As is all too common these days, entries were limited, and only eight pilots arrived on a warm but blustery day. To allay the moans and groans about old, out-dated aeroplanes Mark Shepherd arrived with a Hobie Hawk and was eventually only side-lined by a recalcitrant control linkage.

Flying commenced shortly after 09:00 and six rounds were flown. As is traditional for this last competition of the year, the scoring system employs a saw-tooth approach. If you land on or close to an even minute, you get a much higher score than landing close to an uneven minute. So, deciding to land at eight, or even six minutes is better than landing close to nine minutes if you cannot get to the ideal time of ten minutes. Also for every metre you land from the ideal designated spot, you lose landing points. From this it is clear that it is very difficult to attain the perfect score of 1000 points per round. (800 for flight time and 200 landing points).

After six rounds, worst round being discarded, the scores were as follows: Ian Sime - Supra - 4929 points. Paul Carnall - Maxa - 4398 points Gordon Browne - Xplorer - 4309 Alan Smith - Supra - 4253 points

SAMAA

The 2016

Bulletin 1: 4 March 2016

HistoryBefore 2003, the Power Nationals used to be combined of several disciplines, but there was no SAMAA prescription as to which events were staged together. After the establishment of the SIGs, each discipline decided, rightly or wrongly, to have their own National Championships. Currently, with activities at a lower level than previously, the entry numbers are small, and there was a popular call in 2014, and a decision from the SAMAA management, to return to a combined national championship, where competitors may enter other classes, share information with competitors from other classes, socialise, and economise by being allowed to pool resources.

The main motivation of a combined Nationals, is to create an opportunity where we may grow the competitive aspect of the SIGs, at an affordable level. The 2015 Aerial Concepts Combined Nats was an unqualified success, with six disciplines being contested. This year we are joined with Fun Fly, Aerobatic Helicopters, and FPV Racing.

Important informationPlease read this Bulletin carefully, since it contains important information. If you have any general questions, please get in touch with the SAMAA GM, Bob Skinner, or the Event Director, Johan Groenewald. For SIG-specific questions, please contact your SIG chairperson.

InvitationEvery paid up member in good standing with the South African Model Aircraft Association, is invited to participate in the 2016 Aerial Concepts SAMAA Combined Power Nationals. Specific membership to each of the Special Interest Groups is waived, but only for this event. The spirit of the event is one of inclusivity. However, members are required to have specific SIG membership for those SIGs that are in a team selection process.

OrganisersThe South African Model Aircraft Association, and the nine Special Interest Groups: CLASA (Control Line), MAASA (RC Aerobatics), SAMPRA (Pylon Racing), SAMJA (Jets), NASA (Scale), LSA (Large Scale Aerobatics), NFFSA (Fun Fly), Helicopters, and FLY-FPV-SA (FPV Racing). The organising committee is Johan Groenewald, Bob Skinner, Marietjie Skinner, Boet Denysschen, and Pieter Frylinck, with support from the Klerksdorp Pilot's Association, Western Transvaal Flying School, the Klerksdorp Radio Flyers club, and the City of Matlosana.

Each SIG will provide its own infrastructure (judges, equipment, scoring, etc) and there has been general agreement to share equipment where possible.

Title SponsorWe are extremely grateful to Dean Grobbelaar and Aerial Concepts for a sponsorship towards the costs of the Nationals, for the second year running. This is welcome relief in these tough economic times, and it has enabled the organisers to keep the entry fee at a reasonable level. Many thanks, Dean. I encourage all participants to support Aerial Concepts…they are supporting us!

OfficialsIn the next few weeks, more information will follow on the judges and jury appointments for the 2016 Aerial Concepts SAMAA Combined Nationals. Accommodation will be arranged for the judges at an affordable B+B. It must be stressed that cost-saving is an absolute necessity, and judges will be asked to share rooms, with separate beds of course. Reasonable reimbursement for transportation is possible, but we ask that judges from the same location endeavour to travel together.

VenueThe competition will be conducted at the PC Pelser airfield, travelling east on the Stilfontein Road (Buffelsfontein road) from Klerksdorp. GPS Location is S26 52 04 E026 42 53. The entrance to Klerksdorp Radio Flyers is exactly 2.1kms from the exit of the PC Pelser airfield, on the road west back to Klerksdorp.

DatesFriday 22 April 2016 (arrival, non-competition day), to Tuesday 26 April 2016 (Wed 27 April 2016 is a public holiday).

Eight SIGs have committed to participation. Closer to the time, the SIG chairmen and the organisers will work out a programme that maximises time, site, and personnel use. If you have any questions regarding rules and procedures of the disciplines that you wish to participate in, please contact the SIG chairpersons. At this point, it is known that RC Aerobatics will be flown on Saturday and Sunday; Large Scale aerobatics on Monday and Tuesday; Jets and Scale on Saturday and Sunday; Helicopters on Saturday only; Pylon Racing on Saturday and Sunday; FPV Racing on all four days; Control line probably on all four days, and Fun Fly to be decided.

Food and beverageThe organisers are in contact with Cliff Lotter and his crew, who did the daily catering in 2015. The food was superb, and the pub provided welcome relief for those who were thirsty or hungry. The steaks at the clubhouse are legendary! There are obviously many options for food in Klerksdorp.A braai is scheduled for Sunday afternoon/evening, details of which will be communicated in a next bulletin. The KPA will arrange this function, and the costs will be advised in a future bulletin.

Practice facilityThe committee of the Klerksdorp Radio Flyers have made their facility available for those who wish to practice at the site. It is fully serviced, with a clubhouse, shelter, toilets, showers, running water, electricity and charging facilities, etc. Camping is possible at the KRF field at R100 per person per night, all proceeds going to KRF.

Validity of competitionAt a meeting of the SIGs in February, it was accepted that three entries in a class constitute a competition. At least three competitors must show intent to compete, by at least turning up with their equipment, ready-to-fly, on the day of competition in that class, with realistic intent of competing. Where there are less than three entries, the participants will be allowed to compete but no trophies (organiser or floating) will be awarded. However, certificates of participation will be awarded.

Those disciplines/classes that are in a team selection process, will receive priority in case of weather delays, or force majeure. At this point it is known that MAASA (class F3A only) is having its first team selection event.

PrizegivingsThe on-field prizegiving ceremony for the Aerobatic Helicopter classes will take place on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday there will be prizegiving for Aerobatics, Scale, Jets, and Pylon Racing. Prizegiving for FPV Racing, Large Scale, Fun Fly, and Control Line will be on Tuesday afternoon. Please note that these are tentative arrangements, pending the final programme of events.

Weather conditionsSunrise on 22 April 2016 is at 06:33, and sunset on 25 April 2016 is at 17:46, making for days with 11:13 hours of daylight, on average. Here are a few other statistics that may help you in your planning, especially the type of clothing and protection that you may need. Statistically, rainfall in April is minimal.

SAMA A News Issue 1 of 2016 - Page 25

Hello Bob/editor,

Thank you for the fine edition of SAMAA News (Issue4 of 2015). I was most impressed by the wisdom expressedin the article: On being a chairman of an RC model aircraft flying club; by Claude Mackrill.

The sentiments expressed by Claude can serve to guide not only the esteemed chairmen of the numerous SAMAA clubs, but also everyone serving on the SIG committees and the SMC itself.

I was saddened by the Chairman's report relating to the attacks on office bearers of the SAMAA which, apparently, again came from the same disgruntled and bitter member and his lone lame supporter, who has attempted exactly the same thing in the past, during my term as chairman of the SAMAA. Each time the SAMAA chairman is victimised, tarnished, painted behind his back, and blamed for issues, which once investigated by third parties, are proven to be untrue, libellous, and with no substance. The inability of this two-man partnership from the dark side – to learn from their past mistakes and false rumour-spreading – has its own significance.

It reminds me of the story; there are only two types of people in the world, those who work and make honey like the bees, and those whose sole mission is to destroy, by making poison like the spiders. Keep on with the good work and a big thank you to Marthinus and his committee and our General Manager for the unstinting work everyone of you are doing for our Association. Joe Coetzer; SAMAA member No. 5
