filmFollowing the success of our film shorts screened prior to feature films last season, we’re delighted to be dishing up some more mini treats to accompany this season’s films. We caught up with Engagement Manager Simon Morris to find out more:

Where did the idea come from to screen the film shorts? We help many wonderful short films come into existence each year through a wide range of community projects and regular workshop sessions. There are so many great ideas and productions that deserve to be seen – and not just by the friends and families of those who made them. We wanted film audiences to see them too. Who are the film shorts by?We will be showing a range of works by locally based filmmakers whose work we help produce in some way. Some will be talented young people and some more seasoned professionals – it’s the quality of the idea and its execution that catches our eye.

How do you match shorts and features? We look for natural connections between the content, theme and style of the short films and the feature. Sometimes this will simply be a mood that binds the two together and our short can help get the audience warmed up ready for the main film; sometimes one film will create an interesting contrast against the other. It’s a fun process looking at what works well together.

What’s the most exciting thing people might not know about filmmaking at the Arts Centre? The amount of it that takes place! In the last year alone our young filmmakers have produced a huge amount of amazingly creative work – one film was selected for a competition at an international film festival. We had a young film documentary film crew that made a 25 minute film about an archaeological dig by the army on Salisbury Plain. More recently we’ve been producing a dramatic version of the Odyssey set on the Bemerton Heath estate and entirely improvised by young people who live and hang out there. Then there are our Preloader and ShootOut competitions, roving reporters and so much more!

Dir: Francois Ozon. 105 mins plus film short. Cert 15. French with subtitles. Cast: Fabrice Luchini, Kristin Scott Thomas, Emmanuelle Seigner, Ernst Umhauer.

A witty and compelling tale about the seductive, and sometimes dangerous, charms of storytelling.

When disillusioned teacher Germain gets hooked on 16-year-old Claude’s stories, which revolve around a fellow student’s family, he encourages him to write more of his invasive and slightly sinister fiction.

When the stories start to focus on Germain’s wife (Kristin Scott Thomas), however, things take a turn for the weird. A chilling and self-aware thriller that blurs the lines between fiction and reality.

“To watch it is to be simultaneously seduced and interrogated.” New Statesman
