“Folk Music at its best” The Guardian

Performed by Yellow Earth, Yeh Shen is the world’s first Cinderella story dating back to 9th Century China. We chatted to the company about the show:

At the start of the creation process, how do you decide which story to tell?Theatre for children and family audiences has always been a great passion of mine and I have had the good fortune to work with many expert practitioners in this field over the years. When I became AD of Yellow Earth - a British East Asian theatre company - I wanted to bring the stories of East Asia to young audiences and create theatre that fuses eastern and western performing traditions to celebrate the meeting of different cultures.

This story tells of the triumph of love and kindness over cruelty and I wanted to bring a piece to young audiences that, although set in a world far from their own, they could still relate to and empathise with.

What can audiences expect from this particular Cinderella story? The writer has taken the first ever recorded

version, written in 9th Century China and given it her own twist. There are clear similarities with the version we are familiar with today; the story of a virtue finally recognised, the ball which is the Chinese New Year or Spring festival when traditionally young women would go to meet potential husbands, the transformation from rags to riches and the loss of a shoe. In this version Yeh Shen has a magical fish as a friend and there is more than one pair of shoes!

What would you like the audience to take away from the performance? There will be lots to delight in with live music, puppetry and dance and I hope audiences will enjoy this special Chinese New Year offering and discover that the story they know of as Cinderella has in fact its origins in another time and place.

How will you be celebrating the Chinese New Year?On the road with the play and the cast and I hope, a good meal!

MET OperaScreened Live in HD via satellite from New York Saturday 14 February 5.30pm ● Book Now>>>

In February’s screening live from The Metropolitan Opera in New York, we welcome two rarely performed one-act operas. What better way to shake up Valentine’s Day than with a contrasting programme of romantic fantasy and intense psychological thriller?

Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Bartok’s Duke Bluebeard’s CastleSaturday 14 February 5.30pmYou can experience a first from the MET Opera Live this Valentine’s Day. Acclaimed Polish film director Mariusz Trelinski makes his highly anticipated debut with a new double bill of two rarely performed one-act operas. Trelinski gives Tchaikovsky’s lyrical fairy tale and Bartók’s intense psychological thriller the same setting, inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Expect vintage costumes, cars and imagery as you enter this mysterious world…

Based on a Danish play, Iolanta is a romantic fantasy about the blind daughter of a king. Ignorant of her affliction, she is kept prisoner by her father, but eventually must face the truth of who she is before

she can experience both sight and love. Bartók’s only opera, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle is loosely based on Charles Perrault’s late-17th century fairy tale. It tells the grotesque story of a rich and powerful man, suspected of having murdered several wives, who brings a new bride to his castle. In Bartók’s version, the two roam the castle as the bride, Judith, cajoles Bluebeard into opening rooms he wishes to keep secret, each of which reveals an aspect of Bluebeard’s life. Bartók’s unique music makes the opera a thrilling journey.

Valery Gergiev conducts the double bill, which is a co-production with Teatr Wielki-Polish National Opera. Anna Netrebko stars as the title character in Iolanta, with Piotr Beczala and Aleksei Markov as Vaudémont and Robert, two rivals for her love. Nadja Michael sings the central role of Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle, with Mikhail Petrenko as her mysterious and menacing new husband.

Screened live from New York in glittering HD, this rare and intriguing double bill is not to be missed.

This month we’ve got two great examples of very different shows for little (and not-so-little) ones:

Beta TestingTuesday 24 February 8pm ● Book now>>>

If you like to enjoy performances from the edge of your seat, then Circus Geeks’ daring juggling, comedy and logical approach to life could be just the ticket. We chatted to performer Arron Sparks to find out more:

You say Beta Testing “began after a late night conversation about juggling, art and pizza”. That’s an intriguing beginning - tell us more!I was chatting to the late Luke Wilson and the topic of the internet came up, as it often does with me. We got excited in our pizza induced state by the observation that few circus artists shared their thoughts and experiences of their work online. So the next day I set up the blog.

What is your background? How did you end up becoming a professional juggler/circus artist?I come from a typical background, none of my family are in circus or any kind of performing. I got into Yo-Yo when there was a massive craze in 1998, I ended up going to a local juggling club to learn more Yo-Yo and inevitably learning to juggle, I loved it. From there I heard about juggling conventions, performing and circus schools.

When I was 19 I went to London to study

at the National Centre of Circus Arts where I graduated with a degree in 2008. Since then I’ve been performing in all sorts of shows all over the place.

What can we expect to see on stage?Juggling, comedy and odd moments. Beta Testing is a strange beast, some of it is formal and serious, other bits are downright ridiculous.

4. What’s the most unusual object you’ve ever juggled with?To find that out you’ll have to come and see the show!

Beta Testing is kindly supported by our Education Sponsor Fletcher & Partners. We chatted to them too:

Tell us a bit about Fletcher &Partners...Fletcher & Partners are an independentfirm of chartered accountants. We havean enviable reputation for providing firstclass accountancy, taxation and businessadvice and are committed to developingclose business relationships with ourclients.

Why did you choose to becomeour Education Sponsor? At Fletcher & Partners we are keen tosponsor events that involve and entertainthe local community. Image: Beta Testing

By the RulesLaunch: Wednesday 25 February 6 - 8pmExhibition: Thursday 26 February - Sunday 29 March

A s The Space Between exhibition comes to a close on Sunday 22 February, we prepare for the launch of our next exhibition By the Rules.

By the Rules is an exhibition of paintings and sculpture sparked by creative rules.

Carole Pearson is drawn to industrial materials which she considers playfully and with a lightness of touch. She approaches her making process with a rigour that led her to instigate the discipline of making a sculpture a day.

Guy Bigland’s Solution Paintings are generated from set criteria which convert the numbers in a Sudoko puzzle into instructions for making paintings.

Join us for the free launch event for a first look at the new exhibition and a chance to meet the curator and artists.

Practice at ICIAWednesday 25 February 7pm ● Book now>>>

Our performance scratch night takes place at ICIA this month. Join us in Bath for an evening of dance and theatre extracts. You’ll discover four fantastic companies testing out new works in development and have the chance to contribute your thoughts.

February Practice features:Julia Thorneycroft Dance: ‘Frustra’Frustra takes an irreverent but warm approach to the ridiculousness that can be contemporary dance, with live music, influences from popular culture, tango and our love of reality TV shows.Julia Thorneycroft Dance creates accessible Dance Theatre exploring social themes and human nature. The company aims to reach out beyond the traditions of theatre spaces and increasingly seeks to present outdoors and at rural venues.

Massive Owl: ‘Castle Rock’It’s 1959. Or is it 1960? It’s Castle Rock and four boys hear something on the radio.

Massive Owl’s newest performance in development is an investigation into the popular culture of adaptation. Massive Owl are attempting their own form of adaptation of a cult classic film and the book that it was originally adapted from. There might be a woman pretending to be a twelve year-old boy, or a man pretending to be a deer...

Online Book ClubLove books? Join the conversationRegistration Deadline: 20 February ● Sign up now>>>

We love books and often wish we could go to a regular book group to chat about literature with others who share our passion. Trouble is when you work irregular hours it’s not always possible to get there. Chatting to audiences we discovered that we’re not the only ones who struggle with a regular setup. So this month we’re launching our first ever online book group, exploring texts featured in our programme.

How will the book group work? We’ve added a forum to our Facebook Page where discussions will take place. Each week we’ll set a different theme and you can comment or catch up on what others have said at any time so you’ll never miss out due to other commitments. We’ll also have specific advertised time slots when we’ll invite guests to join our discussion so there are times when you can guarantee others will be online if you want a more immediate discussion.

How do I join? We’ve set up the registration deadline as an event so you can book into the group as you would do for any of our performances or films. Make sure you select Online Book Group in your email preferences when you register (or edit your preferences if you already have an account) to give us permission to contact you with Book Group information. We’ll then notify you by email about weekly themes and new book announcements.

What will the first book be?The first book will be Ablutions by Patrick DeWitt, which was shortlisted for a Man Booker prize. It’s a grimly funny tale from the sodden depths of the Los Angeles underworld. Fellswoop Theatre will be performing their stage adaptation of it here on Tuesday 31 March and have agreed to join the discussions so it seemed a great book to start with. You can enjoy a taste of it online here>>>

Where can I get my copy of the book?Waterstones in Salisbury has kindly

agreed to support the Online Book Group, offering a 25% discount off RRP price for anyone who purchases the book directly from them (please note they only have limited copies in store so they may need to order it in for you). Paperback and E-book varieties are also available from Waterstones online.Buy the book online here>>>

When will the book group start? We’ve asked people to register by the 20 February so that we have time to communicate themes and discussion slots. The forum will be open for discussion from Thursday 26 February and we’ll be in touch with everyone who has signed up before then to share further details.
