TABLE OF CONTENT

Mulhouse has created quite a stir in the Alsatian land-scape. The city is proud of its Alsatian culture, to which it associates its own distinct character. A character that has been forged by textiles printing, mechanics… and the arts!

INDUSTRIAL, YES, BUT SO MUCH MORE...The Golden Age of Mulhouse industry has not only left a legacy of beautiful textiles and the prestigious cars in its museums. There are many testimonies to its industrial saga: some are more obvious, like the worker’s housing estate (the first in France) or the Nouveau Quartier (New District). Others are rather more unexpected: the Hasenrain hospital, the beautiful villas of the Rebberg district and even the zoological and botanical park.

Since the end of its period of industrial glory, Mulhouse has continued to innovate and develop its know-how. For example, an exclusive Christmas fabric is created each year to dress the city’s Christmas market. And it is here that France’s first tram-train has been in operation since 2010.

The creativity of Mulhouse does not stop there: the city that was once called the French Manchester has suc-ceeded in the reconversion of its industrial buildings. It is thus that a part of the University of Haute-Alsace and a comtemporany art center have taken residence in the old foundry.

Like any true Alsatian, Mulhouse loves good food. Food lovers are spoilt for choice: Winstubs, Michelin-starred restaurants, creative establishments… and the Canal Couvert market. As you can easily imagine from all the culinary products from around the world that you will find here, Mulhouse is a cosmopolitan city. With its 136 different nationalities and proximity with Germany and Switzerland, Mulhouse offers a fertile breeding ground for discoveries and the rapprochement of cultures.

Let it be known, Mulhouse is a curiosity that is well worth the trip!

MULHOUSE, CITY OF ART AND HISTORYThe rich history of Mulhouse is revealed in its highly- varied architecture: during a stroll through the city you can admire Renaissance-style buildings, industrial buildings and original buildings like the Annular Building or the Tour de l’Europe, whose triangular shape symbo-lises the Rhine crossroads that links France, Switzerland and Germany.

The quality of its heritage and development was rec-ognised in 2008 by the award of the City of Art and History label and confirmed in May 2016 with the opening of the Heritage House.

Mulhouse certainly is a city of art and you will find all types of artistic expression in its streets: dance, music, street art, painting - even on the walls! The arts are even to be found on former industrial brownfield sites thanks to the La Filature - Scène nationale performing arts cen-tre or the MOTOCO collective. The city is proud of its art-ists: every year it calls on a local talent to create a sculp-ture that will enhance one of the city’s numerous parks. Even the tram stations have an artistic touch here!

TRY MULHOUSE !Over the years, Mulhouse has met many challenges and has constantly reinvented itself. Even today, the former City-State continues to cultivate its singularity by proudly affirming its heritage and originality. Whether you are a lover of mechanics or beautiful fabrics, a culture buff, food lover or passionate about nature, this unique city will surprise you. So, dare to try Mulhouse!

OTTMARSHEIM ABBEY CHURCHLocated on the Romanesque Road of Alsace, the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Ottmarsheim is a fine example of 11th century Romanesque architecture. Built between 1030 and 1040 by Rudolf of Altenburg, one of the founders of the Habsburg family, it was consecrated in 1049 by the Alsatian Pope Leo IX. Its octagonal structure, echoing the palatine chapel of Aix-la-Chapelle, makes it a unique example of Alsace’s religious architecture.

CHRISTMAS FABRIC

Every year, the city of Mulhouse creates a new exclusive fabric pattern by commissioning a local designer to make a new design. Called “Ode boreale” in 2016, it decorated the city hall and the cabins at the Christmas market and was displayed in the streets of the historic city centre. Each year, it is used in artisanal table and kitchen linen (napkins, tablecloths, table sets, aprons), produced locally and given the specific label of “Alsace terre textile”. For six years, the fabric has also been entrusted to local designers who use it as the base for their inspirations. The result is a unique collection of accessories, clothes and festive decorations.

THE CHRISTMAS MARKET OF MULHOUSE

Christmas in Mulhouse is a magical, authentic moment where traditions come alive at the Christmas market in the heart of the city centre. The Christmas market stands out as unique by tipping its hat to the city’s rich textile heritage and honouring its fabrics each year.

THE LAND OF CAROLS AND FABRICS

Mulhouse is also the capital of the Land of Carols and Fabrics, which stretches from the foot of the Ballon des Vosges to the Alsatian Jura. It forms one of the seven Christmas lands which make up Alsace, each with its own specificities. It is based on the textile tradition, deeply rooted in the territory, and on the presence of numerous choirs and musical ensembles. Alsace’s first choir was founded in Mulhouse!

To ensure this tradition is perpetuated, the region’s tourist offices organise various textile workshops including the “Textile Minute”, a short and original workshop, enabling visitors to create a postcard with fabrics, designed by a different local illustrator each year.
