Newsletter for December

“When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’ So, they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.”—Luke 2:15-18

Every year for Christmas Eve, I try to find something new to preach about in my sermon. Sometime in the past month during my preparation time for my Bible study series on the Holy Spirit, I came across something that I had not seen in the Scripture listed above. Verses 17 and 18 (underlined above) show that the shepherds could not keep what they had seen and experienced to themselves. The angels had told them where they would find the Christ child, and after finding the babe and his parents the shepherds told anyone who would listen what had happened to them that night. From the angels praising God to finding Jesus later in the manger, the shepherds shared what they had received from God that very night.

Question for you - when was the last time you shared with someone what you have received from God lately? Whether or not we know it or want to admit it, God works in our lives daily. The stronger our walk is with God, the more we will be able to see and recognize God at work in our lives. It is those stories where we see God at work, we need to be willing to share with others. The shepherds were the first ones to share their encounter with Jesus with anyone who would listen. Why not us?

In our world today, there are less people who know about the Savior of the world. Quoting Scripture verses and “thumping” people over the heads with our Bibles does not work any longer. What is working, is sharing the stories of what God has done in our lives, not only to help with the good things in our lives but also how God has gotten us through the not-so-good things. And the stories that are having the greatest impacts are those where we as individuals and as a church are loving and serving our neighbors inside and outside of our community. The younger generations of today and those who are not in a church community are looking for ways to build and to be a part of a community. We have the opportunity to do that by sharing our stories and by inviting others to be a part of Salem. When we are faithful in doing this, we have the opportunity to experience what the shepherds did, “… and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.”
