From the desk of the Grand Knight: Over the past three months, I have had the honor of chairing our monthly meetings. Each month I am amazed at the efforts of our brother knights and how much they do for our community. But I also realize that there is so much more talent within our council that we rarely see. Many work below the radar, and we don't see or recognize their efforts as we should. Then there are those who joined the Knights for their own reasons and have not found their niche within the council. The Catholic church has recognized that there are Catholics who for whatever reason have drifted away from practicing their faith. Efforts are underway to welcome these parishioners back to their faith. I am encouraging all brother knights within our council to reconsider their participation in the activities of our council. We see some of our newest 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree knights attending the monthly council meetings and for this sacrifice, I say "Thank you." For other council members who read this newsletter, please consider spending a couple of hours a month and attend our monthly council meeting. When you see 35 council members at the meeting and there are over 200 members in the council, we as a council may not be meeting our member's needs. Please consider attending our next meeting on June 13th. We are having our annual elections for positions within the council leadership. If you are interested in making a difference, please attend and self- nominate from the floor if you would like to be considered. Council Meeting Notes from April 11 UNOFFICIAL (from the editor's unreadable notepad. -ed)

One rap of the gavel started the show, on time at 7:30PM. Don Simmons, DGK/GK-in-training conducted the meeting. Previous minutes were reviewed by Jim Broadhurst.

CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE: Fr. John reported on the convocation of NH Priests he attended this week. Paraphrasing one presentation he attended: “We are all baptized; we are all 'ministers' in our church. (Besides 'ministers' or Eucharist, or music, or lectors, the “laity” in the pews are also 'ministers.') The Mass has always been intended to be a worship service of more than one; while the priest is the most obvious 'minister,' the language of the Roman Missal includes all in the church taking part in the liturgy. And here is an example. When the priest prepares to read one of the prayers at Mass, he will say, “Let us pray” and then he pauses a bit. This pause is not just the time for the alter server to bring over the book to the priest, to flip the pages and look for the right page. It is also in that paused time that we offer up our own individual prayers for family, for health, or job. We make our own individual prayer, as a 'minister,' and make this Mass for our intentions also.

So while the priest might at times be “talk show host, orchestra leader, politician, magician” he is the one who calls people together in prayer to enter into the ministry of Christ.

MONEY REPORTS:Bob Fournier, Treasurer, and Charlie Walsh, Financial Secretary (officially and now in actual fact), gave their reports. As of May 1, we have 251 members. Vinnie, quite relaxed sitting in the members' area, approved the report.

Bills and Communications:DGK Don reported on incoming mail, including a “Thank You” from the family of Brother Ron Kater for our support at his wake and funeral, April 19 & 20.

Don presented a $1,000 check to Fr. John for Catholic Charities.

Bingo:Paul Simard reported that Bingo is well ahead of budget. Wednesday had 213 players; Friday had 263. The bus was full for Wednesday!

Texas Hold-em:Larry reported that the Texas Hold-em games are on budget for the year. He also relayed that Ed Callahan, Rockingham Park, predicts that when Massachusetts gets its casinos in operation, in about two years, we should expect a 60% drop in revenues. Now, 80% of the players at the track are from Mass, including the “bigger rollers.” When the Mass casinos are running, many of those players will not come up to NH. We will monitor the situation.

Troop Support:The mission continues. We sent more Tootsie Rolls to troops in Afghanistan. As of the meeting, this year's total is 8 boxes at 122 pounds. We are within our troop budget. There was no correspondence to report. - P.St.Amand.

DISTRICT DEPUTY REPORT:

Don Gagne reported on the 3rd Degree Exemplification held Friday, May 4, in our own council hall. See the Membership section below for details. (I have sprinkled some of Don's information into other parts of this newsletter. -ed.)

The film, “For Greater Glory” will be coming to theaters. This film, with “A-List” actors, tells of the 1920's Mexican government's violent persecution of the Catholic Church. The current issue of Columbia has a full article on this film describing the role the Knights of Columbus, many martyred by shooting or hanging, had in this fight for religious freedom.

Gen. Enrique Gorostieta Velarde (Andy Garcia) leads the Cristeros into battle in the new film For Greater Glory, which opens June 1 and tells the true story of the Cristero War in Mexico in the 1920s.

(Speaking of assault on religious freedom, don't forget our own government's attack in the form of the Health and Human Services mandate for abortion, sterilization, and contraception. This battle is on-going. -ed)

Bishop Peter has declared that he has “no limit” on how many Knights can attend an event in regalia, where an honor guard has been requested. And he likes swords! (Note: no one is to just “show up” in regalia as an honor guard unless it has been requested and then organized by a local color corp commander.)

Camp Fatima will have a workday to prepare the camp for the summer, on May 19, 8:00AM to 4:00PM.

Fr. Smalley will be conducting a Men's Summer Retreat on the weekend of August 24-26.

The State Newsletter has a full report on the recent Convention, as well as details of many other events, including Camp Fatima workday.

4th Degree

The 4th Degree Assembly meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month in the council hall.

The next 4th degree exemplification will occur on Saturday, June 16, in Nashua, NH. See the State website for Information for the 4 th Degree . Any 3rd degree Brother wishing to make his 4th degree should contact a member of our assembly/council.

There is a Deacon's Ordination on May 26; an honor guard may be requested.

MEMBERSHIP: Bill Richards, Admissions Chairman reporting.Third Degree Exemplification

On Friday evening, May 4, 2012 a Third Degree Exemplification was held at the Salem Council 4442 hall under the co-ordination of our District Deputy Don Gagne. We had twenty-eight candidates attend the ceremony of which four were from our council, Rev. Thomas Frink, Alan Dillingham, Edmund Powers, and James Robertson. The ceremony was well attended, with approximately fifty spectators

from around the southern part of the state, and at least ten of those were from our council. Everyone came away from the ceremony impressed, and I would like to express my appreciation to all from our council who filled in with the degree team to provide an extremely moving presentation. Please be sure to offer your congratulations to each of the new council members when you see them at forth coming council meetings.

This degree was held in honor of our deceased brother Stanley T. Gorgol; a certificate was prepared and signed by all the new 3rd degree brothers, and it will be given to Stan's wife Pauline.

(Don Gagne did a great many tasks to pull this 3rd degree exemplification off, from recruiting our council members to fill in to play small parts in the degree, to himself playing the part of “Host District Deputy” who welcomes the conferring degree team, to making the soup and sandwiches for the after exemplification mini-meal. His work went to guarantee that the State Degree team was impressed by our council's facility and fraternity. -ed.)

At our council meeting on May 9, Bill Richards, the Admissions Chairman, presented the 3rd Degree certificates to Ed and James, and then to Alan. (Alan was almost overlooked, sitting in the back row of the members; hence the separate picture. -ed)

(Please keep Al Hamel and his family in your prayers. Al lost a second brother, Fr. Joseph L. Hamel, M.M., on March 28, just a few weeks after his brother, Richard W. Hamel passed on February 11. Here is a note from Al... -ed)

Father Joseph Hamel, MM-Maryknoll Missioner

My twin brother, Father Joseph Hamel, passed away last month. Father Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Lawrence, MA.

He graduated from St Anne's Grammar School and Central Catholic High School in Lawrence. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Empire State College in New York and Masters' Degree from Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining, New York.

Father Joe first served as a Maryknoll Brother for 26 years. He began his duties with parish youth and pastoral work including CYO retreats, volleyball, and drama coach in Los Angeles.

After one year of Spanish language studies in Cochabamba, Bolivia, he was assigned to Peru to teach English to high school students in Lima. He then returned to the language study school to learn Aymara in order to minister to the residents of the Altiplano of Peru. He was assigned to pastoral work there, heading the Coordinating Committee of Formation, and started a mobile team for training of local lay leaders. After celebrating his years as a Maryknoll Brother, Father Joe Hamel was ordained a priest in 1985, and continued with his second 26 years of service, now as a Maryknoll priest. He returned to his work in Peru among the Aymara people serving as pastor of Huancane Parish. In 1997, Father Joe was assigned to Japan to work with Latin American immigrants. After two years of Japanese language study he worked in the Tsu diocese of Kyoto with the Japanese Christian community. He was later appointed to First Regional Superior Assistant of Maryknoll's Japanese region. Father Joe spoke six languages. Joe remained close to his siblings and their families no matter how far away he traveled, and each one was very special to him. He treated his parish people as he would his family. Those blessed enough to know him could not help loving him. It has often been said that his mix of diligence and kindness made an impact in their lives and will never be forgotten. In his honor, his beloved families and mission communities have serviced memorial celebrations in Maryknoll, NY, NH, California, and Japan. Father Joe was one of a kind. I had a special bond with him as his twin. Father Joe is in heaven now, but we all miss him very much. Al Hamel

From Gene Bryant – more “Good of the Order”:

“We had a visitor this weekend, during our Tootsie Roll activity. A gentleman from Tennessee, in town looking into the affairs of some property he owns out on Stiles Road, stopped by when he saw all the cars in our parking lot.

John Naum, a Fourth Degree member from Philip Paul Breen Council #8576 in Chattanooga, TN, (and Assembly 1084), was given a comprehensive tour and history of our Council by Ken Akerley, (and may have gotten a little Bunker Hill history as well!). John also left with a couple of our newsletters to take back with him. John lives in the suburb of Hixon, TN, and travels up to Salem a couple of times a year, and will now make a point of trying to be up here on a 4442 meeting night. For those interested, the Chattanooga Council website is www.KofC8576.org.” “

(Gene didn't say in his mail to me, but I am assuming that the visitor was suitable impressed with our Council. As a reminder, as members of KofC, our valid degree card will give us access to any council around the world. Several members from 4442 have visited other councils in other states, and were always warmly received. - ed)

TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE April 27-29, 2012

Brothers,

A huge "Thank You" to all the members, family and friends who worked so hard this weekend to bring home another very successful Tootsie Roll Drive effort. The weekend started out under cold windy weather, and it looked like that might depress our fundraising, but a tremendous performance on Sunday by our dedicated army of volunteers brought in record receipts for a Sunday -- Big Comeback!!

We collected an unofficial $11,605, down only a couple of hundred dollars from 2011. (The council “rounded up” this figure to an even $12,000.)

Once again, our friends from Play Among the Stars turned out to fill many shifts over the three day weekend, and once again, our hero Bill Silvestri worked multiple shifts on each day, bringing in over $1000 single-handed. Many members and their families also worked two or three shifts over the weekend out in that cold wind and we are very grateful. I also want to thank our green eyeshade counting crew, who gave up an entire spring weekend to make this event work -- Alan and Janet Phair, Ken and Peg Akerley, Ralph and Rita Miele, and Joan Bryant. For good measure, the always restless Alan and Ralph gave our kitchen a thorough cleaning in their spare moments!

If you have not joined us in this most rewarding annual event, you miss out on meeting some of the remarkable people that live in our community, and you miss the tremendous satisfaction that comes from helping our dear friends in the intellectually challenged community.

Thank you all again, and save the dates of April 26 - 27 - 28, 2013, Tootsie Roll time will be here again before you know it.

Fraternally,Gene Bryant, PGKTootsie Roll Co-Chairman

Editorial Page

I have ended up with some blank space to fill. Rather that add jokes, I would like to state an opinion on some of the topics in this newsletter and from the pages of the latest Columbia magazine. Let me know what you think... Send me an email to: [email protected].

I was reminded again at the 3rd degree about the dangers of “Partisan Politics” and how we should never bring partisan politics into the council hall. But a recent statement by the Catholic Bishops of April 12, “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty” (and reprinted in Columbia) speaks out against the Obama administration's HHS mandate that would assault Catholic conscience. And Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight, asks us to defend religious freedom today. In the words of Cardinal Dolan: “We did not ask for this fight, but we will not run from it.” Isn't that taking sides? Isn't that partisan politics? So I looked up the definition of “partisan politics.” :

1.a person who takes the part of or strongly supports one side, party, or person; often, specif., an unreasoning, emotional adherent

I think this is the key: partisan politics would be to support a “side” or “party” or “person”, without regard to the actual issue at hand. To have blind loyalty to a party, no matter what the moral or social question that is being discussed, is to leave our own reasoning powers and moral decision making behind.

We are “of this world” and have obligations while we live our lives. We seek God's kingdom, “on earth as it is in heaven.” It is our right and duty to speak out on the issues of the day. We do not leave our faith on the altar as we leave church on Sunday. So, be ACTIVE in the political discussion, fight for the right, speak out boldly as a Knight and as a Catholic. But remember, there is always good in everyone, even that guy on the other side of the aisle!

US Bishops Call for “Fortnight for Freedom” - June 21 – July 4.

The US Bishops are calling for 14 days of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action to emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. (This call is included in the April 12 statement cited above.) “Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power.... Dioceses and parishes around the country could choose a date in that period for special events that would constitute a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty.”

More on the movie: “For Greater Glory”

From our Columbia magazine, here are some facts:

“During the conflict, more than 200,000 people were killed or martyred.

During 1926 to 1929, the Mexican government seized Catholic schools and seminaries, expropriated Church property, and outlawed religious education. It closed Catholic hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the elderly. Priests and nuns were barred from wearing religious garments, from voting, and from criticizing the government or commenting on public affairs either in writing or in speech.”

(I find it intriguing that this film, several years in the making, should appear at this specific time in our own country's debate about religious liberty. “Although the film is about specific historical events, the filmmakers believe that its message about religious freedom is universal.” -ed)
