BREAD FOR THE WORLD SUNDAY
We will observe Bread for the World Sunday October 15.
You will have an opportunity to write letters to our legislators encouraging
their support of programs that help the poor and the hungry.
Our charitable work through the food shelf in our local area and through
ELCA World Hunger is very important. But if government programs are cut
churches, synagogues and mosques could not make up the difference. So it
is important that our legislators hear that as Christians we support
government programs that help the poor. A Senator once said that on average every letter written to a
legislator on behalf of the poor saves a life. Bread for the World and many
other groups seek to end hunger by 2030. We have made progress but
there is still a ways to go. Write a letter Sunday, October 15 and save a life.
WOMEN, YOU ARE INVITED
The Women of Salem’s Fall General Meeting
will be on Saturday, October 14 at 9am.
We are privileged to have Bonnie Jepsen of Longville
as our speaker. Bonnie’s daughter, Annie, has committed to two years of missionary service in Houston, TX,
teaching Muslim women English as a second language and being a
witness of the love of Christ. You don’t want to miss hearing her
story through the eyes of her mother. If you have never attended our Fall
Meeting, we encourage you to come and see what the
Women of Salem do. We will have plenty of
coffee and refreshments. Karen Nelson / Katie Daudt

OOOPS! Two granite faceplates for the
Columbarium were stored in the church garage and were inadvertently placed in a box and auctioned off with other
items at the church auction. They are granite and approximately 11”x11”x1/2” thick. If you were the recipient or know of someone who received them, please contact the
church office (363-2011). We appreciate your help in locating these faceplates and are willing to
purchase them back.
HARVEY, IRMA, MARIA, JOSE…
Hurricanes have caused massive damage this fall. The latest count of those who have died as a result of
Hurricane Irma is 75 in Florida. Earlier there was massive flooding in the Houston, Texas area as a result of Harvey. It will take a long time for people to recover and rebuild their
lives. In Puerto Rico some people may be without electricity for up to six
months. I can’t imagine what life would be like.
If you want to help there is no better agency than:
Lutheran Disaster Response. 100% of what you give will be used for
direct help to hurricane victims. As a charity Lutheran Disaster
Response is rated 5 out of 5 stars. You may make your check out to
Salem Lutheran and indicate “Hurricane Response” on the memo line. Lutheran Disaster Response is
very efficient because they work through local Lutheran congregations in
the disaster areas and recruit many volunteers to help with the work of
healing and recovery.

Message from Pastor Trish ELCA to celebrate 500th anniversary of the Reformation
with public event in D.C. (The following if from www.elca.org/News-and-Events/7891)
The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), will host a
commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on Oct. 31 at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, D.C.
Eaton will be joined by the Rev. William O. Gafkjen, bishop of the ELCA Indiana-Kentucky Synod and chair of the ELCA
Conference of Bishops; the Rev. Richard H. Graham, bishop of the ELCA Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Synod; and ELCA Vice President Bill Horne.
The event, which will meet under the theme "Looking Back and Called Forward," will be available online via livestream for
all to watch. All are invited to participate and honor the Reformation anniversary as the ELCA bears public witness to Christ, who frees us to love and serve our neighbor, and as we look to the future to which God is calling us.
Additional details will follow as they become available. For more information, contact Rob Campbell at 773-380-2986 or [email protected].
- - - About the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with more than 3.7 million members in more than 9,300 congregations across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of "God's work. Our
hands," the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA's roots are in the writings of the German church reformer Martin Luther.
About the 500th anniversary of the Reformation
Martin Luther posted the Ninety-Five Theses in Wittenberg, Germany, on Oct. 31, 1517, and the resulting debate about Christian teaching and practice led to changes that have shaped the course of Western Christianity for almost 500 years. The Reformation offers to Christians everywhere a liberating way of listening to and sharing the word of God. It teaches that Christ's life flows through faith into a life of service to the neighbor and offers the promise of God's love that makes
possible a life of "living, daring confidence in God's grace."
ELCA congregations, members, synods and affiliated institutions are observing the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in a variety of events and activities. Many of the local activities reflect the magnitude of work being done on a national and international scale. In all the activities, the ELCA seeks to find in this historic milestone an occasion to give a confident and
joyful witness of the life and freedom in Jesus Christ that is for all.
Salem will be celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation through Worship, Music and Fellowship during the month of October in our Sunday Worship services culminating in a special worship service on Sunday, October 29th with the celebration of the Rite of Confirmation for Bailey Nornberg.
Please join us as we celebrate our past, present and future as the church together. Freed & Renewed in Christ.

Pastor’s Report
The fall season is starting. There are 7 kids in confirmation and Sunday School will start in October. One unusual thing
happened this past month, Pastor resided over two funeral services for Virgil Pofahl. There was one in the Cities and one
here at Salem. The JOY Group (Jesus, Others, and You) is going well. There is a baptism planned for October 1st.
SLC Ministry Work

LUTHER 500 QUARTER COLLECTION How are you doing collecting quarters? Remember that our goal is to collect $500 worth of
quarters by October 29, Reformation Sunday. We have figured out that 2000 quarters weigh about 25 lbs. Therefore we will find a way to show progress towards our goal. You may turn
your quarters in when you fill a pill bottle. If you write a check instead you can indicate “Luther 500” on the memo line. We will turn the amount of the check into quarters
or add the equivalent weight. We can be part of a special initiative to help fund cooperative work in Indonesia focusing on
sustainable agriculture, education, safe water and sanitation. ELCA World Hunger is working with Lutherans in Australia and New Zealand to raise $500,000 for the work in Indonesia. ELCA will raise $250,000 and
Australian Lutheran World Service will raise $250,000. This is an exciting way to work with other Lutherans to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the
Lutheran Reformation. Lets have fun while doing good.
God’s work, Our hands.
TWIN CITIES THEATER GROUP PRESENTS ELECTRA AT SALEM Save the date of October 5 at 7:00 pm.
Salem has been asked to host what will be an unforgettable performance of the Greek tragedy Electra by Euripides performed by a cast from the Twin Cities-based Ten Thousand Things Theater Company. This ancient story of family bonds and the
search for revenge still rings true today as we struggle with questions of how we can be crippled by, grow from, or simply live with the repercussions of our actions and the actions of those we love. Though this is a Greek tragedy it won’t be without humor,
wit and especially heart. The cast for this performance includes some of the leading actors in Twin Cities theater.
Salem has been asked to host this free performance which will also be presented in Emily, Outing and Remer that same week. Ten Thousand Things is a
professional theater company whose mission is to bring great, professional theater to people who may not normally have access to it.
New Business
a. Discuss need for policy concerning use of Narthex - The Council decided to ask each team for their input as to where they
would recommend placing displays. We are looking for ideas.
b. Review Pastors work schedule - The Council believes it is good for Pastor Trish, and for the church for the pastor to have
48 hours in a row off, when possible. The SLC agrees with the recommendation of the EMT to have Pastor Trish take her
days off from Sunday noon through Tuesday noon, when possible. She will continue to be on call as she was in the past.
c. Pastor’s contract - Her contract runs October 1st through September 30th. Motion: Tobiason/Trampe/passed: Refer
pastor’s contract to the Executive Management Team for research and to bring a recommendation to the council.
d. Bingo on July 4th - The Chamber of Commerce asked if Salem would like to run the Bingo games on July 4th.
Motion: Trampe/Daudt/passed: Salem Lutheran Church does not want to run the Bingo games.
Approve and Review
a. Approve minutes - Motion: Tobiason/Trampe/passed: Approve the minutes for August meeting as written.
b. Financials - Motion: Daudt/Trampe/passed: Accept the monthly financial reports as presented.
Adjourn - Motion: Daudt/Tobiason/passed: Adjourn. The meeting adjourned at 7:00pm with the Lord’s prayer.
Note taker for this meeting,
Barbara Anderson
