Page 2: Saint Therese Parish · Oswald, mother of Father Norm Oswald. Our parish hosted both the Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial for †Louise on Tuesday, August 9th. Countless friends,

A heartfelt thanks to all who ministered in any way for the Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial for †Louise Oswald, mother of Father Norm Oswald. Our parish hosted both the Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial for †Louise on Tuesday, August 9th. Countless friends, coworkers, and relatives of the Oswald and Burazin families graced our parish with their presence and prayer. Thanks to Archbishop Jerome Listecki for coming to the visitation and to Bishop Emeritus Richard Sklba for presiding at the Rite of Final Commendation.

As with any liturgy, there are ministries to be done to prepare, during, and after such a celebration. Thanks to the church cleaning crew, who took special care to clean the church in preparation for the funeral rites. Thanks to those who assisted with the set-up of Heck Hall for the well-attended reception, and especially to Donna Schmidt, Funeral Lunch Coordinator, and her crew of servers and bakers. Thanks to Denise Dostalek, our Building Services Coordinator, and to Heather Goeden, our Administrative/Pastoral Assistant, for rearranging their schedules and making this liturgy a priority for our parish. Thanks to the liturgical ministers from our parish (ushers, greeters, Eucharistic Ministers, altar servers, sacristans, St. Therese Choir, Canticle Choir. and instrumentalists), and our Staff Musicians, Mary Radspinner, Organist/Accompanist and Coordinator of Music, Paul Corrao, Pastoral Assistant for Liturgy/St Therese Choir Director, and Sterling Biggers, St. Therese Choir Accompanist/Parish Musician. Thanks also to Elterine Jankowski-Biggers for directing the joint choir for the liturgy.

If you have not had the chance to express you sympathy and support to Father Norm, please note that you can send a card to him in care of St. Therese Parish, and we will place it in his sacristy mailbox here at the parish.

One of the main issues our Parish Pastoral Council is dealing with is the reorganization of our Prayer and Worship Committee. The Prayer and Worship Committee is one of the four standing committees of the Parish Pastoral Council. The first steps the Council has taken is assuring that all liturgical ministries have coordinators. Our current liturgical ministry coordinators are Linda Okruhlica–Eucharistic Ministers; Ann Maker–Lectors; Sue Kolesari–Greeters; Kathy Hubrich–Altar Servers. The Usher Ministry is capably coordinated in a joint effort of Shari Egan, Rich Sanger, and Dick Lemke, with Shari Egan assuring full complements of ushers for all our liturgies. Rich and Dick pitch in as needed, especially during the summer months. Our Sacristan Ministry is need of a coordinator.

At our Annual Meeting in May, we were reminded that the word “liturgy” comes from the Greek word which means “the work of the people.” Liturgy is not something that is simply done for us. It is participative. It requires all celebrating together, including the assembly (congregation) and, of course, the presider.

On any given weekend, we need 10 Eucharistic Ministers, 7 Ushers, 6 Greeters, 4 Lectors, 2 Altar Servers, and a priest presider for each liturgy (two priests or one priest to preside at two Eucharistic liturgies).

Next month, our Stewardship Committee will ask us all to pray about how we steward our time, talent, and treasure. As a gift of your talent, would you consider and pray about serving in a liturgical ministry? We need to replenish all our ministries.

All we have comes from our Provident God. One ways of giving thanks is serving as a liturgical minister.

God’s peace and blessings to you and yours!

Registration for the Catechesis Program 2016-2017 is in full swing. If you know of families whose children are not enrolled in our program please have them notify the parish office and we will contact the interested parties.

We are in need of one more aide. If you have an interest in serving in this capacity, please call the Parish Office and Jean Marie Weber will contact you. Our Catechesis Program, Pre-School to Grade 8, begins on Sunday, September 11th, and meets each week after the 9:00AM Mass on Sunday.

Our summer project is to pray since this is an essential part of the Catholic Christian life. Jesus taught us to pray always. Each family has been given a book of Prayers to help pray daily. We are emphasizing praying the Sign of the Cross, the Our Father and the Hail Mary each day.

Two – 36” x 72” rectangular tables that seat six to ten people for $209.95 each

Mission Sunday is This Weekend - August 20th/21st

This weekend, August 20th/21st, our Parish will participate in the Mission Appeal Initiative organized by the Missionary Cooperative Plan of our Archdiocese. This year we are happy to welcome the Comboni Missionary Sisters, an international missionary community founded in 1872 by Saint Daniel Comboni, the first Catholic Bishop of the then immense Vicariate of Central Africa.

The Comboni Missionary Sisters are particularly committed to empower women through formal and informal education, to train community leaders in all spheres of life, and to accompany Church and Societal efforts on advocacy, social justice and dialogue.

Let us share with them the liveliness of our faith, our desire to serve, and the kindness of our solidarity!

Reminder:

No morning Mass on Friday, August 26th.

Dear St. Therese Parish Community:

Thank you for your donation of $734 to Youthaiti. Your donation helps us continue our programs of promoting ecological sanitation, hygiene and sustainable agriculture in rural Haiti. This year we launched a school garden program in five schools where we had build a dry-toilet, a demonstration container garden at our Center for Sustainable Development, and continue to explore ways for locals to create sustainable businesses that march with our mission. Without your help, none of this would be possible. Feel free to contact me if you would like to join us on a trip to Haiti, or if you have ideas or questions about any of our programs. Thanks for your support!

In gratitude,

Gigi Pomerantz – Executive Director, www.Youthaiti.org

Dear St. Therese Parish Community

Thank you so much to everyone at St. Therese Catholic Church for your kind donation of $175 to Greater Tosa Interfaith. As we strive to keep our older adult members connected to a caring community, your continued support is much appreciated.

In 2015 we were able to serve over 280 people. We shopped with or for people 671 times and provided 645 rides. Friendly visits were made to shut-ins more than 218 times. 130 volunteers provided 3,937 hours of service to Greater Tosa Interfaith’s members. Through the actions of our wonderful volunteers we are able to show our frail and isolated older neighbors that they are still valued and cherished members of our community. Thank you for helping us in this mission.

Peace to you,

Amy Dedow – Director - Greater Tosa Interfaith

Doorways to Scripture

Join Sr. Bea Dorsey, SSSF for Doorways to Scripture - Considering Peace this fall. Peace...What is it like? How does it come? Has it ever been? Will it ever be? This series will address these questions from a Christian perspective. We will reflect on what Scripture says about peace, how Christian Mennonites, who place peace at the center of their tradition, appropriate these scriptural roots, enter the dialogue between Mennonites and Catholics, and finally, respond to the legacy of Daniel Berrigan’s extraordinary commitment to peacemaking.

Sessions will be held in Clare Hall 105 on the Alverno College Campus (3335 S. 39th St, Milwaukee) from 9:30AM to 11:30AM on the following Saturday mornings: September 17th, October 25th, October 29th, November 12th, and November 26th. The cost is $20 per session or $100 for the series. Contact Heather Goeden in the Parish Office for a registration form.

Volunteer Communion Ministers Needed

The Spiritual Services Department of Froedtert Hospital is seeking additional volunteer Communion Ministers who would like to be involved in the sacred and meaningful work of bringing Communion to Catholic patients. Being a regular Communion Minister requires approximately one to two hours per week. We are also seeking substitute Communion Ministers who would fill in for those who are away. If you would like to become a part of this fulfilling ministry, please contact Sister Helen Harry at (414) 805-4663.

A Stewardship Moment – August 20th/21st

The Gospel reading today starts with a question: “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” Jesus offers only a simple reply: Strive to enter through the narrow gate. Many will try to enter and will not be able. Good stewards know there is only one, narrow gate. Not everything will fit. This narrow gate has no room for our accomplishments. No room for our money. No room for our possessions. No room for anything else but those who’ve been good stewards of the Gospel. We can’t custom build our own gates either. There is only one, narrow gate that happens to be open for a time, but for how long? What is our plan of action to get through that gate?

The Parish Office will be closed

on Monday, September 5th for

the Labor Day Holiday.

August 21st, 2016 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Saint Therese Parish Families, Our fourth annual Saint Therese Parish Family Camp/Retreat is just around the corner! This year we will be going to Camp Gray Friday, September 30th, staying overnight, and returning Saturday afternoon, October 1st. Even if you have participated in previous years, this year’s retreat promises some exciting experiences.

Here are the important details:

1) Dates: Camp Gray Family Camp dates are: September 30th, staying overnight, and returning Saturday afternoon, October 1st.

2) Cost: $25.00 per family (This fee includes meals, lodging, and the Environmental Stewardship Program). The balance of the cost of this program is being covered by a very generous, anonymous donor.

3) Location: Camp Gray is located near the Dells (E10213 Shady Lane Road Reedsburg, WI 53959) http://campgray.com

4) Transportation: We will meet at St. Therese Parish and use our own vehicles to transport our families.

5) Everyone is welcome—no matter how young or how old!

6) Please notify me ASAP and let me know that you will be joining our Family Camp Retreat at Camp Gray! I must have an accurate head count by September 25th so that our camp hosts can order supplies. Talk with me after Mass, send me an email at [email protected], or call me, Sterling Biggers, (414)303-0943 (cell phone).

Sincerely,

To St. Therese Community of Faith,

Words cannot express how grateful our family is for the support given us at the death of our Mother, Louise Oswald. I thank Dr. Guliano for welcoming us for Mom’s Mass of Christian Burial, and I am so grateful to St. Therese Staff – Heather, Lisa, and Denise.

To those who came and cleaned the Church to prepare it for the Mass. To Elterine and Sterling, Paul, Mary and both of the Choirs, Fr. Hugh, Jim

Balliet, Donna Schmidt and the Bakers, Chip and Mary Bunzel. Thanks to those who helped to set up, serve, and clean up for the time of fellowship after Mass.

Thanks to you all for your support and prayers and words of comfort for our family. Many family members and friends said that if it could be said that a Funeral was beautiful, this was such a time. And it was because of St .Therese Community of Faith. If I have left anyone out, please know that what you did to help is deeply appreciated. A final, very special thanks, to Kathy Hubrich who kept me on course at a time when one isn’t always thinking straight. In this Year of Mercy – the corporal work of mercy is “bury the dead.” Your presence helped us to fulfill this work of mercy.

In Christ – Fr. Norm Oswald, Anita (Oswald) Yeager, Frank J. Oswald
