Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time B: July 25, 2021

Two Fish and Five Loaves

What a great lesson of faith we are experiencing in the readings this weekend on the Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time. Elisha was a prophet in the Northern Kingdom between 850 and 800 BC. His story reads like a novel. It is found for the most part in the Second Book of Kings; Elisha is the successor of the great prophet Elijah; he is his spiritual son and, moreover, the biblical authors attribute the powers to him similar to those of the great prophet.

This is how, much later, around 200 BC, the book of Sirach sums up his life: “When Elijah was hidden in the whirlpool, Elisha was filled with the Spirit. During his days, he was not shaken by any leader, and no one could intimidate him. Nothing was too difficult for him. During his life he performed wonders, and even after his death, his works were wonderful. (Si 48:12-14). Elisha did not leave any writings. However, his miracles and his fiery words visibly marked the memory of Israel; he did not mince his words. Appar-ently, his freedom of speech was total because he was recognized as "a man of God" (2 Kings 3,12).

In the Gospel message, “Jesus went up the mountain, and there he was sitting with his disciples. The word "mountain", in Galilee, near the lake, can only be symbolic (the hills rise to a few hundred meters). No doubt John wants us to understand that the hour of the messianic banquet announced by the prophet Isaiah was near: "The LORD, the almighty, is going to give on this mountain a feast for all peoples, a feast of fatty meats and old wines, succulent fatty meats and decanted old wines ”(Is 25:6). To this crowd hungry for the word of God, Jesus will offer the sign that this long-awaited day is really here because it is he who takes the initiative.

The four Gospels note the disproportion between the five loaves available and the five thousand men to be fed (with Elisha it is a much less marked disproportion in the multiplication of the loaves) but in both situ-ations, scripture is noting the superabundance of messianic gifts.

When he got there, John changed his tone: “Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks, distribut-ed the loaves to them. You can easily recognize the words of the Last Supper there. Nowhere does John relate the institution of the Eucharist (he replaces it with the washing of the feet, Jn:13), but here, obvious-ly, he refers to it. The Christians whom he addressed immediately understand the miracle of the loaves on the little mountain of Galilee. It is a sign of the banquet of the Eucharist which we have celebrated every Sunday since the Resurrection of Christ.

By multiplying the loaves, Jesus reveals to us that God is attentive to the reality of our ordinary and daily human life. Already, in last Sunday’s (the Sixteenth Sunday) Gospel, Saint Mark noted this attention to our feelings and our reactions: “Seeing the crowds as sheep that have no shepherds, he was filled with pity, and he began to instruct them at length.” (Mark 6: 34)

God does not want to replace us. He entrusted us with the task of making our own gifts grow and multi-ply, which thus become the gifts of our charism. We, as Catholic Christians, recognize our human limita-tions as well as the greatness of the “collaboration" of our work with the work of God.

Brothers and Sisters, we need a Saint Vincent de Paul, or a Frédéric Ozanam, Abbé Pierre and Mother Teresa, Catholic Social Services, and Doctors without Borders to continue the multiplication of the loaves in our world. Instead of criticizing God, let us praise him for placing in our lives those who share their time, talents, and treasures with others and with the church as Jesus did during the multiplication of the loaves. May the Lord bless them and multiply them so they can continue to multiply for those in need of bread to satisfy their spiritual hunger as well as their physical hunger. May you become the little boy who shares his two fish and his five loaves with the less fortunate.

LIFE-LONG FAITH FORMATION Growing in Faith At Every Age

0527—STC

I want a laity, … who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold and what they do not, who know their creed so well that they can give an account of it, who know so much of history that they can defend it. I want an intelligent, well-instructed laity — I wish you to enlarge your knowledge, to cultivate your reason, to get an insight into the relation of truth to truth, to learn to view things as they are, to understand how faith and reason stand to each other, what are the bases and principles of Catholicism…Cardinal John Henry Newman

RCIA

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process of welcoming people who want to be full mem-bers of the Catholic faith communi-ty. This includes those who have never been baptized, those baptized in other Christian denominations, and baptized Catholics who have not received the Sacraments of Eu-charist and Confirmation. RCIA is not a “class” but rather a journey of faith. In the company of a group of faith-filled parishioners who serve as the RCIA team and with other people inquiring about the Church, and through experiences of prayer, faith-sharing, instruction, and discussion, you will have the opportunity to grow in your rela-tionship with God as you discover how your faith could be nurtured with the Catholic tradition. If you would like to learn more about RCIA please call Father Yvans.

Catechists Needed for Our Faith Formation Program

If you are looking for a meaningful and fulfilling way to serve the Lord, look no farther than our Faith Formation Program. Catechists, those who help to pass on the faith to our children, are a vital part of our parish’s ministry. We have classes on either Sunday mornings or Tuesday afternoons and have availability for most grade levels. Please take some time to pray and see if God is asking you to be a catechist. And don’t be afraid if it feels out of your comfort zone. God is our help and our strength, no matter what zone we find ourselves inhabit-ing!!

Top Reasons to be a Catechist:

1. You will grow in your own faith, learn the teachings of the Church, and deepen your relationship with Jesus.

2. Your Baptism calls you to share in Jesus’ ministry. 3. Children, teens, and adults in today’s world, more than ev-

er, need to hear the Good News of Jesus. 4. Children, teens, and adults in today’s world, more than ev-

er, need to encounter good role models of faith. 5. You have much to share with those you’ll teach, and you’ll

have opportunities to share faith with other catechists. 6. Today’s catechetical textbooks/resources offer outstanding

support. 7. You’ll be challenged, you’ll have fun, and you’ll make new

friends. 8. You’ll be helping people deepen their relationship with Je-

sus. (You’ll be evangelizing!)

Registration for Faith Formation 2021-22 Registration is now underway. All families have received emails with details and registration forms. If you need a registration form, please contact the parish office. Families can register for the following models:

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 4:42-44 A man came from Baal-shalishah bringing to Elisha, the man of God, twenty barley loaves made from the firs ruits, and fresh grain in the ear. Elisha said, “Give it to the people to eat.” But his servant objected, “How can I set this before a hundred people?” Elisha insisted, “Give it to the people to eat.” “For thus says the LORD, ‘They shall eat and there shall be some le over.’” And when they had eaten, there was some le over, as the LORD had said.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

SECOND READING: Ephesians 4:1-6 Brothers and sisters: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with pa ence, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one bap sm; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

GOSPEL: John 6:1-15

Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. The Jewish feast of Passover was near. When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip an-swered him, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a li le.” One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people recline.” Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments le over, so that nothing will be wasted.” So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.” Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.

CREED: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father, through him all things were made. For us men and for our sal-va on, he came down from heaven.

At the words that follow, up to and including “and became man”, all bow. And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec-

on of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
