St. Brigid of Kildare feast is being celebrated next weekend. We have the privilege of observing it as a First Class Feast! Visit her icon in church and join us next Sunday for refreshments in our social hall.

Brigid lived in Ireland from 450 to 525 A.D., born soon after Ireland had been blessed with the light of faith. She received her religious veil from St. Mel, nephew and disciple of St. Patrick. Brigid built a cell under a large oak, thence called Killdara (cell of the oak.)

She was joined by several other women who formed themselves into a religious community. It branched out into several other convents throughout Ireland, all of which revered her as their founder. Brigid was especially known for her charity. She made crosses from straw. The straw cross is our parish logo.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

We begin the celebration of Catholic Schools Week at the end of January. This is one of the ways the church affirms its commitment to children. The Catholic schools exist to assist the parents in their duty of passing on their faith to their children. The schools provide an atmosphere in which the same ethics and morals are taught as are taught and modeled in the home. The schools assist and support the parents in their vocation as parents. The parents are the primary teachers of their children and their actions are the prime examples the children witness.

Congratulations to Todd Sommers who will receive the Rite of Admission to Lec-tor on Saturday, February 8th at 11:00 AM at St. Mark Center, 429 E. Grandview Blvd., Erie.

3rd Sunday of the Year

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The prayers surrounding baptism often speak of being “clothed in Christ,” and clothes are an important consideration. In ancient times, adults were proba-bly baptized without any clothes at all, and old texts survive asking people to leave fancy garb and jewelry behind as they enter the font. Baptism was typical-ly in a private place, the community waited elsewhere, and the casting off of clothing was hardly a public moment, nor was it embarrassing in ancient cul-tures where privacy was largely unknown. Nonetheless, what was left behind on one side of the font was replaced on the other as a white robe was wrapped around the newly baptized. It was a robe of honor, a dazzling sign of a new beginning for a society that valued clothing as a sign of personal identity. For the newly baptized, a whole week in white garments was the rule, through the second Sunday of Easter, called “Sunday in Albis,” because of all the folks wearing their baptismal robes.

Presentation of the Lord February 1-2, 2014

This feast of Our Lord on February second used to be the feast of the Purification of Mary. It is also called “Candlemas Day,” because part of the ritual for this day is the blessing of candles. People can be invited to bring candles from their homes to be blessed. Some parishes hand out blessed candles at the end of the day's liturgies. Blessed candles from today’s feast are used for the blessing of throats on the next day, the Feast of St. Blaise. The above insert has been prepared by pastoral liturgist and ministry consultant Caroline Thomas for Ministry Resource Update.

To learn more about ND Vision visit their web site at NDVision.com. There are 3 different weeks to pick from. An informational meeting will be held soon.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK How do you need to “step outside” your-self to fulfill your baptismal mission? To whom in your world do you need to bring Christ’s peaceable, liberating love?
