Perseverance

One of the things I like to do with words is to look up the roots of their parts. Often, but not always, I gain a better understanding of the words I am using. Perhaps it comes from the days when I taught Latin at Paul VI, because we were always breaking words into their parts in class. So as we continue our “stay at home” time, I will admit that all novelty has worn off. Some days I don’t even know what day of the week it is without actually having to think about it.

I am grateful to the Lord and to my brother priests, Fathers Kennedy and Bartoloma, and to

our seminarian, Chris Myers, for we have a pretty good house and we get along well and share the household chores. Even with that grace, it can be pretty hard. I am not ready to accept that this sit-uation we are in is the “new normal” and maybe this is making it a bit more challenging for me.

The word that jumps out at me most often in all this is perseverance. Most likely it is from the Lord, reminding and encouraging me to keep moving forward. So I looked up perseverance and learned that it comes from prefix “per” which is an ancient Proto-Indo-European root forming prep-ositions, etc., meaning "forward," and, by extension, "in front of, before, first, chief, toward, near, against," etc. More commonly in Latin also has a meaning of “very” as a prefix. The second part of perseverance is “severus” which in Latin means “serious, grave, strict, austere” and which is proba-bly from the Proto-Indo-European root “segh” meaning “to hold.”

So if we put it all together, perseverance is about “holding” and holding in a “very” kind of way. To persevere is not to just hang on, but hang on tightly, with effort, with steadfastness. Be-cause if we don’t hold on tightly enough, we can lose our grip and be washed away. There are how-ever, many times in our lives, probably more often than we might be willing to admit, and much, much more that we are aware, that our own strength is not enough to hold fast and persevere. So without turning to the Lord who is our true strength, we won’t be able to make it.

There are a lot of reasons that people have given for the presence of the coronavirus in the world, and while I don’t know myself what the “reason” is, I certainly do know the response. To wrap our arms around Christ with all that we have and allow him to be our strength. For it is only through Jesus and his grace that we endure this crisis with perseverance. And even if we should stumble during these challenging days, we should have no fear to reach out to God. For if we trust in our own strength, it will fail us, but if we trust in the strength of Jesus Christ, we cannot be lost; we will definitely be able to “hold very”

God bless you, Father Joseph Byerley

We Need Your Help! In these challenging days of the coronavirus, we are all being affected. Not having Mass is a terrible spiritual burden to endure. Be assured that God’s grace is always available to those who ask. And while we might be missing the fullness of grace we receive at Mass, we still can receive from the Lord his blessings through our prayers when we are unable to participate at Mass. At the same time, the suspension of public Mass also suspends the lion’s share of the income your parish of Saint Rose of Lima needs in order to carry on its mission of proclaiming the Gospel and meeting the spiritual needs of its parishioners. I know we are all facing difficult times, but I ask you to please remember your par-ish as well. I urge you to join many of your fellow parishioners who already participate in electronic giving. Of course, if electronic giving is not convenient for you, I ask you to please continue your regular support of the parish, by dropping off your weekly contribution to the rectory or sending it through the mail. I want to thank those parishioners who generously continue to support the parish. Your sacrifice is greatly appreciated. See the info below on how to sign up for Parish Giving and help to ensure the ability of your parish to contin-ue to serve you, the wonderful people of Saint Rose of Lima. Thank you again!

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,

I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I em-

brace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me

to be separated from You.

Amen.

Trust in God “During a time of crisis or uncertainty, we may find ourselves struggling with fear and anxiety. It is a natural reaction. But St. Paul reminds us in his Letter to the Philippians to “have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplica-tion with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (4:6). - Then, he assures us, “the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (v. 7). With steadfast prayer and thanksgiving, then, we do our best to put our trust in the Lord. Let our actions reflect the trust and peace that can only be found in him. Stay close to Jesus and the Blessed Mother in prayer, asking that those who are suffer-ing from the disease or from any related anxiety may find healing and peace”
