FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In the first reading God calls Jeremiah to prophecy before the nation of Israel. The Lord tells Jeremiah to be brave in the face of opposition. Even though the leaders of Israel will fight against him, they will not prevail because the Lord himself will tell him what to say and will be his shield in times of trouble. The second reading is perhaps the best known from all of St. Paul’s letters. He tells the Corinthians that “Love is patient, love is kind ... it bears all things, ... hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” St. Paul is secure in the knowledge that God knows and loves him. In Luke’s gospel we read the continuation of last week’s story of Jesus teaching in the temple. He proclaims that the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in their hearing, that he is the Messiah. All are amazed. But the people ultimately do not believe him because, after all, isn’t he merely the son of Joseph the carpenter? Jesus tells them that a prophet is never believed in his native place. The people are furious with him and cast him out of town. Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:8 Luke 4:21-30
PARISH TRANSFORMATION
I would like to take a moment to thank the thirty parishioners (listed below) who participated with me in the Parish Transformation Process. Each of these people dedicated their time and creativity to a process that entailed 12 weekly meetings plus follow up work. Even though some of the participants were not able to make all of the meetings, their participation was still critical to the vision and direction that the Parish Transformation Process took.
I am especially grateful to the steering committee members and the recording secretary (marked with an *) for their ad-ditional time commitments and leadership: John Callaghan, Maria Delgado, Tony Delgado, Cathy Desmond, Trina Ei-fert*, Sr. Ann Fanella, Phillip Forshall, Bill Frere, Daniel Gandor*, Pastora Gandor, Pat Harrison, Howie Hartman, Jane Hearrin, Susie Jablonski*, Linda Krok*, Geri LaPlume, Bea Nowak Meyering, Leon Mika, Mary Mika, Enzo Mi-on, Del Norwood, Christine Nowacki, James Ouper, Dolores Purtell, Tina Puralewski*, Lee Puttrich, Ana Rodriguez, Sr. Mary Lou Stoffel, Chris Zaker, and Chrissy Zaker*. We will present our plan to Bishop Manz on February 7th. Once it has been approved, we plan to present it to the parish and to begin working on its implementation.
Again thank you to all the participants for your dedication and commitment. You are truly a blessing to the St. Robert Bellarmine Community. Fr. Neil
MATCHING DONOR PROGRAM
Many companies have matching donor programs for charitable contributions. Matching gifts are a great way to often double - possibly even triple - gifts to St. Rob-ert Bellarmine.
Please contact our Business Manager, Kathy Goetz at 773-777-2666 to see if your employer is on the list!

From the Pastor’s Desk
Today’s scriptures call us to truly listen to the Word of God. Since salvation depends on faith in Christ, we must lis-ten to, and believe his words. God calls us by name to enter into a covenant relationship of love and fidelity. This covenant relationship is fully realized in the mutual and total self-giving love expressed in the inner life of God. God makes it possible for us to enter into that relationship through the salvific death and resurrection of his Son. Through faith we are invited to enter into that covenant relationship. God already knows our innermost being. He invites us to get to know him (listening to his Word) and enter into this covenant relationship (believing his Word and allowing that Word to transform us in to the image of his Son).
The call of Jeremiah to prophecy was God’s reminder to the Israelites that they had abandoned that Covenant. God promises to give Jeremiah the words to say, the strength to stand up to opposition, and his promise that he will be pro-tected. God keeps his promise. Significantly, the Lord tells Jeremiah that the people will not listen to him. As a re-sult of their hard-heartedness and dependence on their own strength, the nation is overcome, the Temple is destroyed, and the people are exiled to captivity in Babylon. This is a good reminder for us that there are pretty harsh conse-quences for failure to listen and believe the Word of God.
The people of Jesus’ time in his home town were no different. As we read last week, Jesus is in the synagogue and has proclaimed that the prophecy of Isaiah has been fulfilled in their hearing. This prophecy is nothing less than God’s promise to deliver his people and fulfill his covenant. At first the people are amazed. But when they realize that Jesus is declaring himself to be the Messiah, they become incensed. They cannot believe that a mere mortal, es-pecially someone they are familiar with, could be the Chosen One of God. Jesus reminds them of the miracles he has performed as signs of God’s power and fidelity. He says that a prophet is never received in his native place. After Jesus compares himself to Elijah and Elisha, the greatest of the prophets, the people were so angry that they tried to drive him out of town and tried to kill him. It seems to be fallen human nature that we don’t want to believe anything beyond our own wisdom and preconceived ideas. God calls us to a greater vision, to trust in what we do not under-stand because God himself has spoken.
St. Paul gives us the key to trusting in God’s Word. Because he is known and loved by God, he turns his whole life over to acting on God’s Word. St. Paul knows that he is known by God because of his experience of Christ. We expe-rience Christ first by hearing his Word; by making it the vision for our life, we are drawn into the personal knowledge that God knows and loves us, too.
Last Sunday the school held an Open House in the gym, showcasing the work of our students and all the wonderful programs that make our school such a wonderful place for Catholic education and formation. Catholic Schools Week had a variety of fun events, including a sing-a-long, spelling bee and talent show. Thank you to all our faculty, staff, school board, parent ambassadors and volunteers who contributed their time and effort.
This coming weekend the Parents Association will host Casino Nights on Friday and Saturday. This is an important fundraiser for our school as well as a fun time. Please see page eight for details.
Today we will hear the Cardinal’s homily on the Annual Catholic Appeal at all masses. The Annual Catholic Ap-peal supports the public ministries of the archdiocese that no individual parish could do alone. The Appeal is the larg-est source of grants and scholarships for our parish schools as well as for capital grants for disadvantaged parishes. None of the funds collected for the appeal will be used for expenses related to the misconduct scandals. Every parish has a goal of 6% of ordinary income. Our goal this year is $31,300. Every dollar above that amount is returned to the parish. For the next two weekends we will be conducting a pledge drive during the masses. This is not simply a sec-ond collection. We will not have a second collection for the Appeal. It is an annual pledge that may be paid over the next twelve months. Please read the Cardinal’s letter, as well as the brochure in today’s bulletin, and prayerfully con-sider a sacrificial commitment.
Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Last month, the United States marked 40 years of legalized abortion in all fifty states at any time for any reason throughout pregnancy on January 22nd, the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision.
Since that time, there have been 55,772,015 abortions that have destroyed the lives of unborn children.
PRAYER FOR THE UNBORN - Heavenly Father, You created us in Your own image, and You desire that not even the least among us should perish. In Your love for us, You entrusted Your only Son to the Holy Virgin Mary. Now in Your love, protect against the wickedness of the devil, those little ones to whom You have given the gift of life.
