The Immaculate Concep on of the Blessed Virgin Mary On Monday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep on of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a defined dog-ma of the Church that Mary was conceived without original sin as part of God’s plan for our salva on. Mary was filled with grace so that she could be the mother of Jesus, God himself entering our humanity. Conceived without sin, she was able to open herself completely to the will of God in perfect humility. Thus she is our model as well as our Moth-er. What God did for Mary through her Immaculate Concep on, he does for us in bap sm, opening up for us the pos-sibility of salva on. We appropriate this grace when we, like Mary, say yes to God’s will in perfect trust and humility. In the reading from Genesis, God confronts Adam and Eve for having eaten the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge. God banishes them from the Garden of Eden as a consequence of their disobedience. St. Paul tells the Ephesians that God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing from before the founda on of the world. He has des ned us for adop on to himself through Jesus Christ. In Luke’s gospel, we hear the Annuncia on, the Archan-gel Gabriel’s visit to the Virgin Mary, telling her that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, she will be the mother of the Sav-ior. Mary responds that she is the handmaiden of the Lord, may it be done unto her according to God’s Word.

Second Sunday in Advent Isaiah prophesies about the coming of the Messiah and the inaugura on of the reign of God. The Messiah will come with the wisdom, power and spirit of God to bring jus ce and peace to the earth. The Messiah will be a descendant of Jesse, the father of King David. St. Paul exhorts the Romans to live in harmony and to welcome one another as Christ welcomed them, so that all the Gen les will come to faith and glorify God. In the gospel, John the Bap st appears in the desert preaching repentance, announcing the coming of the kingdom of heaven and bap zing the people in the Jordan for the forgiveness of their sins. When the Pharisees and Sadducees come to him, he denounces them as a brood of vipers, challenging them to produce good fruit as evidence of their repentance. He tells them that, when the Messiah comes, he will bap ze with water and the Holy Spirit, separa ng the wheat from the chaff. The wheat he will gather into his barn but the chaff he will burn in unquenchable fire. Isaiah 11:1-10 Romans 15:4-9 Ma hew 3:1-12

Second Sunday in Advent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. Our scriptures today begin to transi on the story of the coming of the Messiah from his return at the end of me to his coming in me into human history. We haven’t go en to the birth of Jesus quite yet. Isaiah foretells the coming of the Messiah to judge the people, bringing jus ce to the poor and the afflicted while striking the ruthless and slaying the wicked. Then all na ons will be at peace on his holy mountain. John the Bap st comes to fulfill the words of Isaiah, crying out in the desert and preparing the way of the Lord. He calls the people to repentance for their sins because the kingdom of heaven is at hand. The One who is coming will bap ze with water and the Holy Spirit. John is announcing Jesus’ public ministry, inaugura ng the kingdom of God. The good news is that the righteous will enter the kingdom (the wheat will be gathered in the barn). The warning is that the unrighteous will be like the chaff that is burned in the unquenchable fire.

John the Bap st gives us the very correct spiritual and theological principle that if there is no evidence of sanc fi-ca on (the work of the Holy Spirit) in our lives we will not enter the kingdom of heaven. He challenges the Phari-sees and Sadducees to produce good fruit (righteous deeds) as evidence of their repentance and warns them that the tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. The season of Advent reminds us to be grateful for God’s mercy and to share his grace by doing good for others.

The Bellarmine Bash yielded a net profit of $19,000, just under our goal of $20,000. All in all, the Bash was a wonderful evening bringing the parish together for a fun social event. Thanks again to Nora Kerr and the entire Bash Committee.

The Church celebrates the Immaculate Concep on of the Blessed Virgin Mary this Monday. Our masses will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. (with the school) and 7:00 p.m. While not a Hoy day of Obliga on this year, eve-ryone is invited to reflect on Mary’s rela onship with God, made possible to us in the Sacrament of Bap sm. Please see page two for details.

Due to the rehearsals for the Christmas Pageant, Adora on and Benedic on has been moved up a week, to this Wednesday, December 11.

First Reconcilia on will be celebrated this Saturday. We have thirty-two candidates preparing to receive this sac-rament. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers.

The Giving Tree is up in the ves bule of the church. The names on this Tree are of children from our sharing par-ish, Ascension-St. Susanna, who are in need of gi s this Christmas. Please help brighten this holy season for these children.

Our next Advent Evening of Reflec on will be held this Tuesday, December 10th at 7 p.m. I will be leading a discus-sion on the Annuncia on on Jesus’ birth to St. Joseph. This story occurs only in St. Ma hew’s gospel.

On Monday, December 16, our Asian American Community will host an evening celebra on of Simbang Gabi, an Advent journey with Jesus and Mary to Bethlehem. Cardinal Cupich will be the presider for the Mass at 7 p.m., followed by a social gathering and dinner in Kernaghan Hall. All are welcome.

The Parish Advent Reconcilia on Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 17th at 7 p.m. Please join us for a quiet evening of Scripture, song and a me for reflec on and repentance as we prepare for Christmas.

There will be a second collec on today for the Re red Religious Fund. Let’s show thanks to the Sisters by our gen-erosity. The Parents’ Associa on is hos ng a Pancake Breakfast with Santa today a er all the masses. Come down for a delicious meal and fellowship.

Have a blessed week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Advent Evening of Reflection: Why Christmas Matters Infancy Narratives in St. Matthew’s Gospel Tuesday December 10 at 7 p.m.

This year the Church journeys through St. Matthew’s Gospel, begin-ning with the story of Jesus’ birth (read on the Fourth Sunday of Ad-vent). Father Neil will lead the discussions on St. Matthew’s version (different from St. Luke’s gospel that we will read on Christmas).

This evening we read the story of the Annunciation as told to St. Joseph, the only time it occurs in the Bible.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesday, December 11 in Church 9am – 5:00pm with

Benediction at 5pm

“I know well the plans I have in mind for you, plans for your welfare, not for vice; plans to give you a future full of hope. When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the Lord.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Eucharistic Adoration gives us an opportunity to spend quiet time listening for God’s word.

ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE’S GIVING TREE IN THE VESTIBULE

Every Advent Season, the Giving Tree reminds us to be mindful of those who are poor. Christ’s humble birth and His message of hope for the poor are important reminders for us as we prepare our hearts for Christ’s Birth. The Giving Tree provides 2 ways for you to help out families in need dur-ing this season of Advent. 1. Take a scroll from the Giving Tree. Buy one item of clothing and one new toy for a child from our Sharing Parish – Ascension-St. Susanna in Harvey. Return the gifts unwrapped in a gift bag to the Rectory by December 15. 2. The Mission of Our Lady of the Angels serves West Humboldt Park by providing a food pantry, senior services, an after-school program and an annual Christmas Party for over 1400 people.

Place NEW, unwrapped, items of warm clothing, warm bedding, toys and blankets under the Giving Tree. NO weapon-like toys (Nerf, water guns, etc.) All gifts must be received by December 8.
