Father’s Day

Father's Day was inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement the celebration of Mother’s Day to honor and commemorate our fathers and forefathers. As Catholic fathers, we hope to follow the teachings of Jesus who chose to identify God himself as the Heavenly Father. In what might be the world's most popular story of all time Jesus de-scribed the traits of the ideal father in the story generally called "The Prodigal Son." In Luke 15:11-24 it will become clear that Jesus is identifying the father as God and the wayward son as each and every one of us. The traits of the father in the story stand out clearly: A good provider, owning a large farm with hired laborers and an abundance of material possessions with which to care for his family. A generous spirit, giving his son his inheritance before his own death. A deep concern for the welfare of his son, who chose to take his wealth and leave home for places unknown. A forgiv-ing father who accepted his son, now broke and repentant, back into the family circle. A loving father who ran to his son, embraced and kissed him and had a banquet to celebrate his return home.

I am very grateful for the role model my father was in my life. But I am even more grateful that, despite his own human imperfections, he was present to me, to my brothers and to my mother, offering a loving and stable home. Let us all remember and honor our own fathers, living and deceased and show them our love and support.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The prophet Zechariah promises to send a spirit of grace upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem as they mourn the death of the Messiah. Echoing Isaiah, Zechariah calls him the Suffering Servant, “whom they have pierced.” The prophet pro-claims that this spirit from God will evoke a sense of responsibility and repentance among the people. On that day the Lord will open a fountain to purify them from sin. St. Paul tells the Galatians that in baptism they have been clothed in Christ, hence there is no longer any distinction among them. They are now descendants of Abraham, heirs to God’s promise. Jesus first asks the disciples who do the crowds think he is. They answer, John the Baptist, Elijah or one of the ancient prophets. Jesus continues, “but who do you say that I am?” Peter replies, “The Christ of God.” Jesus re-bukes them, saying that the Son of Man must suffer, be rejected by the leaders of the faith, killed and, finally, be raised. He then tells them that if they wish to come after him, they must deny themselves, take up his cross and follow him.

Zechariah 12:10-11, 13:1 Galat ians 3:26-29 Luke 9 :18-24

From the Pastor’s Desk

The scriptures today call us to remember the love of God given to us in the Passion and Cross of Jesus, and to take up that cross the way Jesus did: in love and trust. In baptism we die with Christ and rise with him to new life. This dying is not simply dying to sin. It is dying to the nature of sin. We are given the grace to imitate Christ who turned his will and his life over to God entirely. This dying to self is dying to selfishness, self-centeredness and self-absorption. Baptism calls us to see the world and those around us as God sees, and to act as God himself would do.

It’s a message we don’t like to hear. Neither did the ancients. In the first reading Zechariah reminds the people that they are the ones who will kill the Messiah. They will look upon the one they have pierced. But the Lord will give them the grace to realize what they have done and to repent. They will be able to mourn him, to grieve deeply. To have the gift of tears is a blessing that we often don’t understand. But as a result of their grief, the prophet says that the Lord will open for them a fountain to purify them from sin.

We understand this fountain to be the blood of Christ. There is a truly awful hymn that tells us that salvation comes from “the blood of Jesus, spurting like a fountain from his sacred arms.” I don’t expect to ever use this hymn in the liturgy, but it graphically gives us the truth of today’s gospel. Jesus tells the disciples that he must suffer and die before he can rise. Our salvation comes through the suffering and death of Christ. The Christ is rejected by his own people as the culmination of that which alienates us from God and one another (sin).

It is Jesus’ unconditional acceptance of this cross in unconditional love and forgiveness that overcomes sin and death. He rebukes the disciples because they see him as a conquering Messiah who will restore the military, politi-cal and economic power of the Davidic kingdom. No, he says he is the Suffering Servant of Isaiah and Zechariah who does not cry out or retaliate. Rather he cries for justice for the oppressed and seeks God’s mercy for those who do him injustice.

He tells the disciples that if they want to come after him, they, too, must take up their cross daily and follow him. In other words, if they want to rise with him they must suffer as he did. That’s why we don’t want to hear the message. But if we want what Jesus promises then we must do as he did.

St. Paul tells us that we all have that dignity and grace in baptism. We are heirs to the promise made to Abraham, that if we have faith in God’s promise we will be heirs to God’s kingdom. The evidence of that faith is exhibited when we live out our baptismal grace by taking up the cross each day, living our ordinary lives with the dignity, love and compassion of Jesus.

There will be a second collection next weekend for the charitable works of the Holy Father (“Peter’s Pence”).

The parish calendar meeting was held on Thursday, June 9 for the upcoming year. Thank you to all the organiza-tion and ministry leaders who worked together to help coordinate our efforts for the use of the parish facilities for the upcoming fiscal year. It takes a lot of time and planning to make it possible. The calendar may look mundane but it represents literally thousands of hours by hundreds of volunteers that make our parish such a vibrant commu-nity. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff who go above and beyond the call of duty for the love of our parish.

In the parish, summer is the time of “spring cleaning”. It is a time for all the deferred maintenance projects and reg-ular deep cleaning of the church, school and parish hall, painting and ongoing repairs. It is a time to catch up on all the organizing of various projects left uncompleted during the busyness of the academic and liturgical seasons. We review the year just completed, evaluate ourselves, our liturgies, our ministries and our programs. We prepare the annual financial report and use the information to guide our future decisions and actions. We prepare the calendar for the upcoming year and plan programs, events and upcoming projects. The days are full and the summer will go by more quickly than we ever expect. Not everything will get done. But then, it never really does. And that’s okay. The rhythm is slower without a sense of overwhelming urgency. Most importantly, summer is a time to reflect, re-charge and reconnect with ourselves and those we love.

Have a Blessed Father’s Day and a wonderful week ahead. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

OFFICE FOR THE NEW EVANGELIZATION ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO

Make Disciples

The Office for the New Evangelization in the Archdiocese of Chicago is spon-soring a one-day seminar with Sherry Weddell, renowned speaker and author of the bestselling book Forming Intentional Disciples. This daylong formation event is open to everyone—parishioners, ministry leaders, key volunteers, pastoral staff, and clergy. In it, Sherry will explore ways to awaken in others a personal faith in Christ and build cultures of discipleship that can transform parishes, helping them move from maintenance to mission-oriented commu-nities alive in the power of Jesus Christ. During this seminar, you will:

• Learn how making discipleship intentional is a game changer for the life of the parish

• Explore how awakening and revitalizing your faith builds community

• Learn to recognize pre-discipleship stages of the spiritual journey and help others move forward

• Hear how parishes around the country are doubling the number of in-tentional disciples in 5 years—and how yours can too

• Learn how parish-based evangelization processes and other existing par-ish programs can create a culture of discipleship
