Pastor’s Corner
We Are To Blame These days a lot of Catholics do not go to church. Missing Sunday Mass is a Mortal Sin, but most
people easily dismiss or excuse themselves from this divine obligation/promise. “No big deal” they tell themselves. They do not recognize that which is holy and necessary.
I believe that Church authorities, in trying to find reasons why, have wasted too much time “pointing fingers”. I believe that the fault lies in the Clergy. If anyone, I believe the Bishops, Pastors and Priests are to be blamed.
When I was a Priest in Catholic High Schools, I knew what was going on in all of the neighboring parishes. My students disclosed so much. Priests were very busy running around. Priests were grouchy, cranky and moody. They were always tired. Some Priests were arrogant and flippant. Most Priests are poor public speakers. They did not seem to believe in what they were preaching. They were not good examples of holiness. Consequently, they failed to teach others holiness.
The Priests most beloved by my students were the ones who actually exuded happiness in what they were doing! They were joyful in and outside of the Sacristy. They were kind and welcoming in the Confessional. They actually smiled before, during and after Mass. They truly became like the person they worshipped and adored (Jesus Christ). My students and teens loved these men and wanted to be in church. They identified inconsistencies immediately.
We live in days of uncertainty, fear, anxiety, depression, and broken trust. We have created a community and society of cynics. They are this way because we — the leaders, Pastors, elected officials, etc. — have disappointed our constituents in some way, shape or form. We have broken many a promise. Who wants to follow someone like that? Who is inspired by someone like that? With the horrific Priest scandals, sacred trust has been shattered.
The Priests of this Archdiocese must focus on repairing “broken trust”.
I think that Priests of the Archdiocese should be engaged in a five-year campaign of Spiritual Priestly Renewal. We need to build up the Mystical Body of Christ.
I apologize for the scandalous behavior of the Church here in the United States. While I still have a few good years of Priesthood, I will continue to make the Sacraments (Body of Christ) available to you. I will do my best to welcome you in Confession. I will do my best in the preparation and delivering of inspirational homilies. I will truly CELEBRATE Mass and not “drone” through the words of institution carelessly and without feeling or purpose.
We Priests need to grow in holiness so that our flock will gladly and enthusiastically follow. When the Shepherd is truly holy the flock will also be holy. Please pray for us.
Msgr. Jon F. Majarucon

Teach children about dealing with disappointment. Many young children are facing a whole new world: less playdates, fewer in-person classes, changing sports requirements, wearing masks, waving instead of giving hugs. While this is hard, it’s a great time to talk to your children about how to handle disappointment when things change. Talk to your children about God’s love for us and how even if we struggle to understand what is happening, God is with us through it all. For more tips, visit https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends,
It was wonderful to see all of the students as we kicked off the 2020-2021 school year. It was evident that the children were all happy to see their friends and teachers, even through the masks!
On August 21, we celebrated First Holy Communion for our 3rd graders on the Feast Day of Saint Pius X. It was great to see their awe and true faith in Jesus come alive as they received the Eucharist. We pray that their receiving of the Eucharist is the first of many! Congratulations, students and families!
