Pastor’s Corner

These last few months have not been easy. However, at this writing most churches have re-opened and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is being celebrated. Still, the

complaints, incessant criticism and pessimism of some believers continue. Let us put things into perspective.

At the daily Mass this past week, the faithful in attendance heard from the Book of Kings. We were reminded of what happened to God’s Holy People 600 years before Jesus. They were defeated and broken, their priests and places of worship destroyed. They were deported. The initial exile lasted 40 years. What followed were additional years of rebuilding and coming back. Thousands of believers died. They did not deserve this, but it happened. They were victims of the political and social problems of the day. The survivors — the Remnant — courageously “picked up the pieces” and rebuilt the Community of God.

At this writing it has been close to 105 days that we have been Sacramentally estranged from the Lord. We are gradually rebuilding. 2,600 years later, WE TOO ARE A REMNANT of God’s people. We are the believers who continue to come and worship. We are the ones who survived and now celebrate and CARRY the Eucharistic presence out into the world.

This is not a time for “venting and criticism”; of pointing out the faults and mistakes of Presidents, Governors, Mayors, or even Popes, Bishops, and Priests and Deacons. It is a time to count our blessings and realize that YOU, the survivors, are the Remnant. You are the survivors. God’s grace is in YOU who have received communion at Mass. It is up to YOU to carry the EUCHARISTIC presence of Jesus into the community of Goleta. It is the Divine Spirit of LOVE you carry.

God bless you in this most urgent ministry of Grace: bolstering the faith of people and doing God’s work.

Msgr. Jon F. Majarucon

Protecting Our Children

Tips for keeping calm and parenting during stressful times. We are living in unprecedented times, and many parents are stretched to capacity. The added stress of pandemic living can make it hard to parent calmly and effectively when children are acting out, but it’s important to remember that children are also going through a huge period of change right now. Instead of reacting in anger, try these ideas to keep your cool. Talk to a friend — many people are suffering from a lack of physical community, so reach out by phone or text. Pray together as a family, asking for patience, cheerfulness, and whatever other virtues you need to get you through the day. Set an example of forgiveness with your children — ask for it when you need it and grant it when they do. For more tips, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Say it on repeat: I am going to keep my calm!” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
