SNPHA: LINE DANCING, BEACH CLEANING, & CANCER FIGHTING

To embark on a good start, SNPhA called its first meeting of the year on the 12th of January. That following Friday, some of our members went to the Waterin’ Trough and had a fun-filled night of line dancing. Over the weekend, several of our strongest participated in a beach cleanup at Sunset Beach. The bad weather did not hold them back as they fought through the strong winds picking up trash off the sand. But that is not all that SNPhA has in store for the year. Some of our up-coming events include, Habitat for Humanity, possibly some HIV/AIDs and/or Poison awareness activities, a recycling drive, and Pho tasting. However, our main service event for this spring is Relay for Life. We have al-ready started a team online called, “SNPhA Gators BITE Back” and everyone is welcome and encouraged to join

us at: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=29656&team_id=844341! This year, Relay for Life will be held at Treasure Island Beach on Friday April 15th

and will be bigger and better! So come out, have fun, walk, run, jump, or anything else you feel you would like to do to support this wonderful cause. If for whatever reason you cannot make it, your donations can still make the difference. On that note, SNPhA will also be arranging some fundraising for Relay for Life, so keep on the lookout for that and help us support the American Cancer Society by reaching our achievable goal of $1500.

! The last year has been one to remember. We stayed near for our tours of the Compounding Shoppe and we trav-eled far for our Midyear Clinical Meeting. We volunteered our service preparing meals at the Ronald McDonald House, and we enjoyed some fun watching our Gators crush the Commo-dores. We utilized our skills to provide blood pressure and medication safety screenings, and we spent time relaxing and watching movies. ! The success of FSHP over the past year can be highly attributed to the hard work and dedication of Kristy Marie Sowerby and Megan Lawman. They were recognized at the January FSHP meeting (pictured) for all of their important contributions to the organization. We wish them the best of luck as they move on from their officer roles and prepare for their upcoming rotations. As our leaders tran-sition, we look forward to a future full of opportunities. ! This semester FSHP is looking forward to three main events: the Abbrevia-tions Bowl, the Residency Showcase, and the Organ Donor Awareness Project. Anyone who knows anything about the medical field knows that there is a plethora of different terminologies and abbreviations. This is espe-cially true in Pharmacy. The Abbreviations Bowl is an opportunity for students to participate in a fun competi-

tion to see what everyone knows. Those who are the most abbreviation inclined will receive prizes. The Abbreviations Bowl will be coming up in February, so study up on those acronyms and get involved. The Residency Showcase will be taking place in March. There are many different opportunities for pharmacists after graduation and this will give you a chance to find out a little bit more about the residencies available locally. At the showcase you can also learn more about the necessary preparations, the application process, and what is involved in getting matched to a residency. April is Organ Donor Awareness month and FSHP will be partnering with Dr. Drew Silverman, Pharmacotherapy Specialist in Transplanta-tion, and Tampa General Hospital to increase awareness for organ donation. Keep on the lookout for more information regarding this event and your opportunity to get involved. ! We are looking forward to an exciting semester. These are just a few of the things that FSHP has planned for the spring semester to find out more come

As a 3PD heading off on rotations, I am confident that I am leaving KE in good hands, and am looking forward to seeing all of the great things that you all accomplish. This will be my last article in The Dose, and so I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing officers for all of their hard work and dedication. I truly cannot imagine not having had all of your assistance this past year. You guys are the best. And on that note, I’d like to wish good luck on Finals to my fellow 3PD Brothers and Sisters- We are so close to rotations, I can taste them.

Challenge game, which allowed us to educate the participants while they waited for their screenings. We also partnered with CVS/pharmacy to offer flu shots at the event. The seniors loved having us there and were all very appreciative of us offer-ing them this service. ASP is planning on continuing this health fair as one of our annual events to attend. Jeanette Connelly, our Operation Immunization chair was the main chair of this event and worked closely with the Operation Heart, Diabetes and Heartburn chairs. A big thanks to all of our student phar-macists who participated in this great event.

Rotation Spotlight: Emergency Medicine at Dr. Philips HospitalDavid Zepf4PD Student! Being in an emergency room for a month is a very exciting experience. Every patient is different and the strategy to treat is always changing. I enjoyed the environment because of the vast array of disease states I was exposed to, the interesting injuries, and the different people I met along the way.! Dr. Philips Hospital is located in central Orlando and is surrounded by all of the major amusement parks. This provided for some very interesting patients. Ambulances brought almost all amusement park accidents to this particular ER. Some of the patients I would get were from water slide accidents, mostly re-sulting from the person not moving out of the way fast enough at the bottom of the slide and the next person coming down would end up kicking them in the face at full speed. Also, DPH was a stroke center, and con-sequently, a lot of our patients had experienced chest pains on the rides and were brought to us.! Of the interesting cases I had while at DPH, one was a young man who found a bat in his bedroom in the morning and it ended up scratching his arm. He had to receive the rabies vaccine schedule, which I had to look up because no one knew the exact days he needed the required injections. Also, I had to be the counterweight for the orthopedic surgeon to pop a dislocated hip back into place. You wouldn’t believe the noise it makes going back in! ! The ever changing patient population and quick response time needed in an ER made for a great experience. I would recommend trying to get an ER rotation because you’ll never be bored and you will get a good overview of every disease state.

Ken CastroStudent Council President! This has been a very busy beginning to the year. I’m glad to see everybody back and ready to take the semester on fully. The Student Organization Annual Retreat (S.O.A.R.) was a great time for everybody that went.   It was also very good to see the St. Petersburg campus so well represented.  Many of the other students at the social com-mented on how many of us were pre-sent and I was glad to hear how well students were networking with their peers. For those of you that weren’t able to make it this year, I highly en-courage you to go next year.  It’s great for putting a face to the name you only see on the discussion boards. ! I would like to also thank everyone that helped volunteer at Career Days. Despite our curse of having horrible weather on career days, it was a great success.  Special thanks to Kristi James for coordi-nating everything and making things run smoothly.  I wish everyone who interviewed luck and hopefully everyone will get what they are searching for. On the business side of things, I am cur-rently looking for people to head next semester’s College of Pharmacy Ball.

Those of you that have been before know how much fun this event is and I would like to see the same feedback for next year's ball.  Anyone inter-ested can email me at [email protected].

USE AS DIRECTEDMr. EIts a Mystery!

Dear Mr. E, I have been reading numerous emails about the Mr. COP pageant that is coming up. I've thought about entering but I am way, way too nervous! I was thinking though, we have some really awesome guys at the St. Pete Campus. My question to you is if we had a Mr. COP pageant for just our campus, who do you think would win?

Sincerely,Mr. COP-out

Dear COP-out, Believe it or not, I was thinking along the same lines. But, I was thinking more about what kind of prizes I’d receive as the winner. C’mon, we all know that Mr. E would take the number one spot and be crowned Mr. COP. I know what you’re thinking while reading this and a familiar phrase comes to mind: “you’re so con-ceited.” I’m just a realist; I view things as they really are and if I were to compete, no one would have a fair shot. You have to think about what these judges are looking for: intelligence, eloquent speech, expertise in talent, and a manly face worthy of representing the COP. Guess what? I possess all four of these compo-nents. Once again, that conceited phrase is probably flashing inside your mind and you want to scream at me. Here’s my secret; I have a coach. That’s right, a coach. Not the purse kind, a real pageant coach. Studies have shown that the majority of the pageant winners have a coach. One of the latest publications in the NE Journal of Pageantry showed some startling data based on a re-cent study. The objective of this particular study was to determine whether the absence of a coach had any effect on outcomes. The primary endpoint measured was a composite of non-selection and early elimina-tion from the pageant. To obtain enough power, the study enrolled 19,876 participants who were random-ized to either the coach group or the non-coach group. Like I said, the results were startling. Of the 9,938 con-testants in the non-coach group, 99.4% of them did not make the tryouts and out of those 60 contestants that made the tryouts, only one of them made it to the

actual pageant. All the results were significant at the <0.05 level. So don’t just take my word for it, let science do the talking. But really, I don’t want to compete in the Mr. COP because my name wouldn’t sound that great. Try saying Mr. COP E ten times fast. So, if I were to predict a winner of a Mr. COP contest here in St. Pete, I would pick Lee Ho. He wouldn’t do it alone though; he’s a brilliant man, I’m sure he would hire me as a coach.

-Mr. E

Dear Mr. E, I am addicted to online shopping while I watch lectures. What can I do to stop this so I don’t spend all my hard-earned money?

Signed, Confessions of a Shopaholic

Dear Shopaholic, I’ve been touched by your story and I really want to reach out and help you. But by the nature of this publication’s timing, I feel that any effort would come too late. By now your bank account is reaching rock bottom with Amazon.com and Victoria’s secret flood-ing your statements. By the time your tax return is deposited from the IRS, it’ll vanish as if the fourth kind had abducted it. Actually, I’m fascinated with how you can watch lectures and shop at the same time. That’s an AMAZ-ING talent!!! I’ve been working on it the entire morn-ing but I can’t seem to grasp it. I started with a slow-speaker like Dr. Meldrum and browsed on Amazon.com but I couldn’t do it. Every sentence of his was laced with a product description, sort of like: “Get 20 beta-blockers with all different intrinsic sym-pathomimetic rare Pokemon activity.” I don’t know how you do it. All I know is that an ability like this is rare. This sounds like a potential Ms. COP talent!

!I hope everyone is having an awesome spring semester and making the

best out of it. I want to thank everyone for coming out to CPFI’s bowling/elections night last week. On top of taking care of our elections, we had some good competi-tion with many sports club regulars being there that night. Our officers will remain the same this year with Michael Geisel as president, Alan Mathis as vice president, Andre McMahon as secretary, and Tarek Fawaz as treasurer. I really want to en-courage everyone to come out to our next meeting. Even if you are not religious at all we would love the opportunity to get to know you. Our next meeting is going to be February 11 and the plan is to go play laser tag so I hope to see you all there! On top of filling you guys in with what is new with CPFI, I wanted to share an encouraging verse with you all.

“The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knows them that trust in him.” -Nahum 1:7

! I know pharmacy school can get rough sometimes but for those who are feeling down just keep persever-ing and I hope that this small verse can be of some encouragement to you. God Bless and happy studies.

SPORTS CLUB: TAKING OVER THE FIELD

! Sports club has had a strong start for the spring semester. The first meeting of 2011 not only included perfect weather, but a very good turnout of over 20 players for football. Many of those who came in-

cluded several 1PDs and three ladies who made some excellent plays. Sports club intends to keep the momentum going with a few planned events such as the team counting competition and Texas hold‘em poker night. Contact any sports club officer for details concerning these upcoming events. We are also still accepting donations for José. So far we have reached

$450 of our $600 goal; help make his wish come true! ! At Sports Club we encourage everyone to attend be-cause attending can benefit you both physically and profes-sionally. Sports club is a great way to network with your fellow pharmacy students in a relaxed setting. It is a great way to get to know some students outside your own year.

! Sports Club is also an excellent way to spend two hours just to de-stress and get some fresh air away from lectures! And as always, Sports Club is still the only student organization that is completely free. We are always looking for new ways to play and want to hear your ideas.
