Page 2 Sixth Sunday of Easter

Dear Friends in Christ,

We congratulate our First Communicants, 22 children, who received the Lord Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist this weekend. Please pray for our children, their parents and all of us that we, like the Apostles (early church), may ever cherish this relationship with Jesus, at least on every first day of the week - Sunday. Our parish will reserve the first few pews in the church for the First Communion children and their families until Pentecost, as a means of participating in their joy and asking for their prayers as we pray for them.

The Sixth Sunday of Easter draws our attention, one more time, to the depth of God’s unconditional love revealed in Jesus Christ. Jesus says “As the Father loves me so I love you. Remain in my love.” (John 15:9-17) God’s unconditional love is always an invitation for us to reciprocate. The way we do this is through Jesus’ instruction: “If you keep my com-mandments you will remain in my love, just as I kept my father’s commandments and remain in His love.” Love is not an empty sentiment or a wishful thinking, nor is it a mere feeling. No, it is a call to action. We can express that love and make it concrete if we keep the commandments. The question therefore to keep in mind is: Do I know the command-ments and do I keep them? Because God loves us, He gives us every grace if only we ask for a try.

Ascension Thursday, forty days after the resurrection - Easter, comes up this week when the church universal commem-orates that great event of Jesus’s ascension. In the United States however, the celebration is transferred to next Sunday. Ten days later, on Pentecost, He sends the Holy Spirit on the Church so that we may be strengthened in our love for Him and for others. Please be a part of those celebrations.

The month of May is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, our mother. Please join us during the Rosary before weekend mass-es and remember to pray a daily rosary as well during this month. It will be good to spend some time in our prayer gar-den with Mary our Mother. Next weekend after the 4:00PM Mass we will crown the statue of Mary in our Memorial Pray-er Garden and Our First Communion children will crown the indoor Statue of Mary at the 11:00AM Mass.

This weekend also offers us the opportunity to make our pledge to “Love One Another” the 2018 Diocesan Stewardship Appeal in gratitude for all that Jesushas done for us. I am very grateful in anticipation for your generosity. Our parish DSA Chair for this year, Lisa Godzicki, will be addressing us at all Masses. I pray that each of us individually and as a parish continue to bring the love of Jesus to those in need and teach the faith to young and old alike through your gener-ous gifts to this year’s appeal.

In Christ, Father Godwin

Finance News

The unseasonably late spring affected many seasonal employees in our area, delaying the start of many jobs. A local gentleman who does concrete finishing work recently contacted St. Vincent de Paul for assistance for food and gas

for his vehicle as he waits for his employment to begin. Your donations to the Poor Box and to SVdP help the needy in our area bridge the gap between paychecks, allowing them to live in dignity as a productive member of our community. Won’t you consider a donation today? Matthew 7:12 “So always treat others as you would like them to treat you, that is the Law and the Prophets.”

Vocation Corner: St. Joseph

Saint Joseph is one of the key characters of the history of salvation. Although he is mentioned very few times in the gospel, his life and vocation are well known to all Chris-tians. The gospel according to Matthew says the he is the husband of Mary (Mt. 1:16), and a just man’ (Mt. 1:19). For somebody who likes long explanations these two charac-teristics of Joseph may seem nothing, but reflecting on them we find a man of integrity, and humility. We don’t need a long explanation to know that he was always work-ing to be the person he ought to be. He also was a man of action, few verses latter the same gospel tells us that Jo-seph “did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him’ (Mt. 1:24). He was always ready to act according to God’s plan.

He is a good example of somebody answering a vocation. He reflected, then presented his plan before God, then listened to God, and finally acted. Joseph teaches us how our will and our intentions are purified and magnified when we listen God’s voice and act according to it.

If you are discerning a vocation, considers Joseph’s exam-ple of integrity, present your plan to the Lord, listen to His voice, then act according to it.

Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism be-fore your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is re-quired for the parents. This is a one session class that is held on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.

Word of Life

“Sometimes our actions speak for themselves; other times, words are needed. Whatever the situation, Jesus knows how to speak to each person’s heart; we simply need to follow where he leads.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “How to Build a Culture of Life,” www.usccb.org/culture-of-life
