Reflections. . . Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a 40-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out "Repent!" before he calls his new followers. "Come after me," Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today's Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation.
Simon and Andrew, James and John were working when Jesus called them. They immediately put down their nets and followed Jesus. Can you imagine? The disciples walked away from their previous way of life and toward another, in which Jesus and his way take precedence. They put aside anything that would stand between themselves and the life of discipleship. Jonah acted similarly--he perceived the Lord's call and responded without question. He literally walked a different path, toward Nineveh. No doubt, Saint Paul's own dramatic conversion was in his mind as he wrote to the community in Corinth. The path of discipleship is about holy perspective. Do not let anything stand between you and Christ Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Stewardship “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”
- Mark 1:17
Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Christians! The call is in the here and now, in our present
circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of
our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God
has a much better plan in store for each of us.

WOMEN'S GUILD BOOK REVIEW Tuesday, January 23, 2018
Sharon Flower continues our book review series with "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage
Murders and the Birth of the FBI", the Amazon Editors pick for best book of 2017.
David Grann gives a well-researched account of the Osage Indian Tribe in Oklahoma. In it he captures lawlessness and greed on the frontier and tells an
untold part of our history. J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI used its prestige and power to
correct these unbelievable injustices.
Join us in the Peace Room on at 12:30 for a light lunch. Review begins at 1:00pm.
Cost is $20 for 6 reviews or $5 for a single review, payable at the door. All are Welcome!

WOMEN’S FAITH SHARING
All women are invited to join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, January 23rd in the Peace Room at 9:30-11:30 a.m., right after the 9 am
Mass. We are so excited to hear from our speaker, Christine Watkins, MTS, LCSW who is a popular and renowned Catholic speaker, retreat leader, spiritual director, professional counselor,
and the author of several books, including the best-seller, FULL OF GRACE: Miraculous Stories of Healing & Conversion through Mary’s Intercession. Mrs. Watkins has hosted her own shows on Radio Maria and for Shalom World Television and is the
Founder and CEO of Queen of Peace Media.
Please join us for her talk, coffee, refreshments and fellowship. We welcome all women, whether
from our parish or from our larger community. Bring your family and friends! We all benefit from hearing and being inspired by our great speakers, and from sharing in small groups at our tables our
own spiritual quests and experiences. Together we pray and call upon God to strengthen us and our faith. We treasure our time together, where we can share our stories, our laughter, and our
tears. We love getting new members to join us, so drop in and see what has kept us meeting for 17 years! For questions, call Annmarie Claymore,
376-8146 or Pam Plant, (925) 451-5009.
Faith Formation News There will be a Parent meeting on Monday, January 22nd at 7 pm
in the Peace Room for our parents whose children are
preparing for The Sacrament of Reconciliation
Eucharistic Adoration
Adoration will be held in the Church because of electrical problems with the
Chapel heaters. We urge you to bring extra wraps and/or blankets to keep yourselves
warm during your stay with the Lord.
In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus selects some of his disciples by inviting them to “Come, follow Me.”
Adoration is one of the greatest places to personally be with the Lord. It is an occasion where one can
willingly set some minutes (or hours!) to be with our Lord, and talk with Him as if he was sitting right
across from you, in skin and bones, about cares and concerns, and times for when one is grateful. It is also a time to ponder through a crisis or
misunderstanding, and receive His Perspective.
Additional people are needed at every hour! (Fridays 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.)
Please come and sign in—no telephone number or obligation is required.

Thank you for your WONDERFUL 2017 food drive donation of 489 pounds of food from the members and friends of St. Monica Church! This equates to 408 meals. We could not do what we do without you. Your year round contributions make it possible for us to provide food to our neighbors in need year round. We are very appreciative of you continued support of the Food Bank and those in need in our community.
We serve 182,000 people each month and distribute over 70,000 pounds of food every working day. Those that receive your food donations, whether they are children, seniors, low-income or just hungry, grate-fully appreciate your kindness in thinking of them. THANK YOU for providing food to feed our families. We hope you will continue to support the Food Bank and the new families that come to us for assistance. Together we are ending hunger! Sincerely, Joan Tomasini, Food Drive Administrator
SOUP TO SERVE
Next meeting: Friday, January 26
Please note: We will prepare soup every Friday until Easter week.
You are invited to gather at the 9:00 Mass, first to be nourished with the Body and Blood of Jesus. THEN - and only then - are we truly able to give to the Body of Christ - the poor - what we have just received at Mass. This makes it one of the most
unique ministries in the parish. All are welcome to attend! No prior experience necessary, just show up and be ready to help, share stories and laugh. If you
have any questions contact Sonja Crumbaugh at 247-0155 or [email protected] or Maura
Clogher at 376-9328 or [email protected]
