JUST A REMINDER TO DAILY MASS FOLKS

When school is cancelled because of the weather, daily

Mass is also cancelled – again for safety reasons.

FR. RON’S RAMBLINGS

It’s hard to believe that January is coming to an

end. The new year has settled in along with some

snow, cold and some hazardous driving days. Just a

reminder that if school is canceled due to snow or

other bad weather, then daily Mass is likewise

canceled. This is for safety reasons.

As we begin the month of February, we celebrate

the Feast of St. Blaise. According to legend, he

miraculously cured a young boy who was choking

to death on a fish bone. From this has developed

the tradition of the blessing of throats with blessed

candles.

Obviously there has been a long tradition in our

church of praying for healing and health.

Beginning with the deep compassion Jesus had for

all those who were sick and the many miraculous

cures he performed in his lifetime. That tradition

has evolved into what is now known as the

Sacrament of the Sick. We anoint the person who is

seeking healing with sacred oil blest by the

Cardinal during Holy Week, and we say special

prayers for healing and strength.

As you know this sacrament was traditionally

called Extreme Unction (final anointing) and was

celebrated when someone was on their deathbed.

However, with the renewal of the Second Vatican

Council, the understanding was expanded and is

now extended to anyone who has a health issue.

The directives say that it can be made available for

each individual illness a person may have….not

just once before we die. However, the sacrament

cannot be administered once the person dies.

Very often hospice will call for the sacrament when

someone is on death’s door. Unfortunately in most

cases it is too late for the person to receive comfort

or solace.

May this truly be a year of healing and health!

PONDERAÇÕES DO PE. RON

É difícil acreditar que Janeiro está chegando ao

fim. O ano novo já se estabeleceu junto com

alguma neve, frios e alguns perigosos dias de

condução. Apenas um lembrete de que se a escola é

cancelada devido à neve ou clima ruim, então a

Missa diária da mesma forma é també cancelada.

Isso é por razões de segurança.

Assim como nós começamos o mês de Fevereiro,

nós celebramos a Festa de S. Blaise. Segundo a

lenda, ele milagrosamente curou um jovem rapaz

que estava sufocando até a morte com um osso de

peixe. Daí desenvolveu-se a tradição da bênção de

gargantas com as velas abençoadas.

É evidente que houve uma longa tradição em nossa

Igreja de oração para cura e saúde. Começando

com a profunda compaixão que Jesus tinha para

com todos aqueles que estavam doentes e muitas

curas milagrosas que atuou em seu tempo de vida.

Aquela tradição evoluiu para o que é agora

conhecido como o Unção dos Enfermos. Nós

ungimos a pessoa que está buscando a cura com

óleo sagrado pelo Cardeal durante a Semana Santa,

e podemos dizer as orações especiais para a cura e

força.

Como você sabe este sacramento era

tradicionalmente chamado Extrema Unção (unção

final) e foi celebrada quando alguém estava em seu

leito de morte. No entanto, com a renovação do

Concílio Vaticano II, o entendimento foi expandido

e agora é estendido para qualquer pessoa que tenha

um problema de saúde. As directivas dizem que ele

pode ser disponivel para cada doença individual

que uma pessoa ter….não apenas uma vez antes de

nós morrermos. No entanto, o Sacramento não

pode ser administrado uma vez que a pessoa morre.

Muito frequentemente a clinica chamará para o

sacramento quando alguém está nas portas da

morte. Infelizmente, na maioria dos casos é tarde

demais para a pessoa receber conforto ou consolo.

Que este possa realmente ser um ano de cura e

saúde!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

STORM CANCELLATIONS: In the event of a storm,

parents are reminded to follow the program policies

regarding class cancellation. Sunday morning

cancellations will be listed on the three major TV

stations, channels 4, 5 and 7 as well as their affiliate

radio stations. Weekday classes are automatically

cancelled if school has been cancelled for that day. In

the event of a sudden storm, all efforts will be made to

contact each family when possible. However, parents

should always use their good judgment in determining

if it is safe to travel before deciding whether children

should be brought to class.

FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING:

Parents of children who are preparing to receive First

Communion this spring are reminded of our upcoming

meeting next Monday, Feb 6

EDUCAÇÃO RELIGIOSA

CANCELAMENTOS DE TEMPESTADE: Em caso

de uma tempestade, os pais são lembrados a seguir as

regras do programa sobre cancelamento de classe. Os

cancelamentos de Domingo de manhã serão listados nas

três estações principais de TV, os canais 4, 5 e 7, bem

como suas estações afiliadas de rádio. As classes da

semana são automaticamente canceladas se a escola foi

cancelada nesse dia. Em caso de uma tempestade

repentina, vão ser enviados todos os esforços para

entrar em contato com cada família sempre que

possível. Entretanto, os pais sempre devem usar o seu

bom senso para determinar se é seguro viajar antes de

decidir se as crianças devem ser trazidas à classe.

REUNIÃO DE PRIMEIRA COMUNHÃO PARA PAIS:

Os pais das crianças que estão se preparando para

receber a Primeira Comunhão nesta primavera são

lembrados de nossa próxima reunião na próxima

Segunda-Feira, dia 6 de Fevereiro ou Quinta-Feira, dia

9 de Fevereiro. Ambas as reuniões terão lugar no

Centro Paroquial de 6:00 as 7:00hrs da noite. Os

SCOUT SUNDAY

Boy Scouts of America have designated Sunday,

February 5

th

as Boy Scout Sunday. St. Michael Parish will

recognize the young people and adults of the parish who are

involved in scouting at the 9:00am Mass on that day. Scouts

and leaders are encouraged to wear their uniforms to Church

(no hats, please).

Scouts, leaders, and parents will be serving in various roles,

including altar servers, lectors, ushers, greeters, and choir

members, and are all invited to participate in the entrance

procession. Interested participants should arrive in uniform

at Church by 8:40am for a quick briefing. Please call Donna

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH NURSE

The Catholic Church teaches that all life, from

conception to natural death, is sacred. However,

modern medical advances have made end of life issues

increasingly difficult to sort out. The Church does not

say that life must be prolonged at all costs. It does teach

that life in all its stages is sacred. That human beings

regardless of their age, illness, social status, or abilities

are never to be considered less than fully human. The

loving gaze of God the Father continues to fall upon

them, acknowledging them as His sons and daughters,

especially in need of help.

Medicine is an art as much as a science. Medical

professionals can provide their best guesses as to the

outcome of an illness, but ultimately God determines

the length and span of our days. After gathering all the

medical facts, it is helpful to have the advice of a priest,

deacon, parish nurse or moral counselor to help you and

your family to make the right decisions. Talking to

these individuals can help you and your family

understand Church directives, assuring that whatever

choices made are both compassionate and morally

ethical.

The Church offers the Sacraments of Reconciliation

and the Eucharist to help those who are sick or dying.

It also provides the special graces of the Sacrament of

Anointing. This Sacrament provides strength, grace,

courage and the forgiveness of sin.

Here at St. Michael’s we are blessed with extraordinary

staff of people who have been trained in dealing with

end of life issues. Please feel free to call me and I can

meet with you and your family members to answer

A Igreja Católica ensina que toda a vida, desde a

avanços modernos da medicina fizeram as questões do

final da vida cada vez mais difícil de resolver. A Igreja

não diz que a vida deve ser prolongada a todo o custo.

E sim ensina que a vida em todas as suas fases é

sagrada. Que os seres humanos independentemente de

sua idade, doença, status social ou habilidades nunca

são considerados plenamente seres humanos inferiores.

O olhar amoroso de Deus Pai continua a cair sobre eles,

reconhecendo-os como Seus filhos e filhas,

especialmente na necessidade de ajuda.

A medicina é uma arte, tanto quanto uma ciência. Os

profissionais da área médica podem fornecer seus

palpites melhor sobre o resultado de uma doença, mas,

finalmente, Deus é que determina o comprimento e a

extensão de nossos dias. Após colectar todos os fatos

médicos, é útil ter o aconselhamento de um padre,

diácono, enfermeira paroquial ou conselheiro moral

para ajudar você e a sua família para tomar as decisões

corretas. Falando com estes indivíduos pode ajudar a

você e a sua familia a compreenderem os directivos da

Igreja, garantindo que quaisquer escolhas feitas são

moralmente éticas e compassivas.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE SUNDAY GOSPEL

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Athletes put hours into practice. It is not enough just to play

the game. In practice a person learns the moves, discovers

how muscles respond, trains all aspects of his or her body,

and over time becomes so proficient at the selected sport that

she or he can intuitively react during play. Practice in sports

helps the athlete develop self-confidence. The same holds

true for the musician, the salesperson, the new teacher.

When an individual takes up something new he or she may

initially be a bit shaky at it. Over time, we develop the skills

so that something becomes second nature. A confident team

takes to the field or the court with the belief that they will

win.

In today's Gospel, Jesus is the confident, self-assured

teacher. Yes, he works a miracle. But before we get caught

up in that, we should look at how Mark portrays him. Right

at the beginning of the Gospel, Jesus enters the synagogue in

Capernaum and starts to teach. Unlike the scribes who would

appeal to the words of Jewish teachers to support their

teaching, Jesus comes across as confident in his own

authority. He has no need to reference what others have

handed on. Instead, his teaching commands respect because

he shows its truth through his deeds.

Like the athlete who is confident in his game, we can

become confident in our faith by practicing it. As we see in

the Gospel from the very first chapter of Mark, Jesus was

confident in both word and deed. We can do the same. By

reading the Scriptures regularly we become attuned to

Christ's teaching. We absorb the knowledge, just as any

good athlete memorizes all the plays. And by acting on

Christ's teaching through our worship of God and love of

neighbor we are performing the deeds of faith. The skills

become second nature as we put into practice what we have

been taught by Christ.

REFLEXÕES DO EVANGELHO DE DOMINGO

Quarto Domingo Do Tempo Comum

Os atletas colocam horas na prática. Não é suficiente apenas

jogar o jogo. Na prática, uma pessoa aprende os

movimentos, descobre como os músculos respondem, treina

todos os aspectos de seu corpo e ao longo do tempo torna-se

tão proficiente em esporte selecionado que ela ou ele pode

reagir intuitivamente durante o jogo. A prática de esportes

ajudam o atleta a desenvolver a auto-confiança. O mesmo

vale para o músico, o vendedor, o novo professor. Quando

um indivíduo ocupa algo novo ele ou ela pode inicialmente

ser um pouco instável no que faz. Ao longo do tempo,

podemos desenvolver as habilidades para que algo se torna

mais seguro. Uma equipe confiante leva para o campo ou o

tribunal com a crença de que vai ganhar.

No Evangelho de hoje, Jesus é o professor confiante e auto-

confiante. Sim, ele faz um milagre. Mas antes que nós

sejamos apanhados nisto, nós olhamos como Mark o retrata.

Logo no início do Evangelho, Jesus entra na sinagoga em

Cafarnaum e começa a ensinar. Ao contrário dos escribas

que iriam recorrer às palavras de professores Judeus para

apoiar seu ensino, Jesus se mostra tão confiante em sua

própria autoridade. Ele não tem nenhuma necessidade para

fazer referência aos que os outros fizeram. Em vez disso, o

seu ensino demanda respeito porque ele mostra a verdade

através de seus atos.

Assim como o atleta está confiante em seu jogo, nós

podemos nos tornar confiantes em nossa fé praticando-a.

Assim como nós vemos no Evangelho desde o primeiro

capítulo de Marcos, Jesus estava confiante em palavra e

ação. Nós podemos fazer o mesmo. Através da leitura

regularmente das Escrituras nós nos tornamos em sintonia

com o ensinamento de Cristo. Nós absorvemos o

conhecimento, assim como qualquer bom atleta memoriza

todas as jogadas. E actuando no ensinamento de Cristo

através de nossa adoração a Deus e amor ao próximo nós

estamos realizando as obras da fé. As habilidades tornam

uma segunda natureza assim como nós colocamos em prática

o que nós foi ensinado por Cristo.

wisdom and courage to do what is right. The Spirit

will show you how to love, honor, and worship

God.
