First Reading

Except for the readings from the Acts of the

Apostles during the Easter season, the first reading

is taken from the Old Testament. This reading is the

faith witness of our ancestors in faith. It is their

statement to us of how they saw God working in

their lives. It is the story of salvation history, our

story. The Old Testament is the foundation on

which the New Testament is built. It is our common heritage that we share and celebrate

together in the Liturgy of the Word. It must always be a reading from sacred Scripture

and cannot be replaced by devotional readings from other sources.

Stewardship: A Way of Life

Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time

On this day the Church rejoices in the great faith of the Canaanite woman. Tomorrow the Church celebrates the greatest woman of faith, Mary, the Mother of God, in the solemnity of her Assumption. Mary is the perfect model of ministry, and witness for the poor and lowly. As disciples and good stewards how do we model ministry to the poor and lowly?

ADULT STEM CELL TRANSPLANTS: Unlike embryonic stem cells, which rely on the destruction of young human life and have not helped a single human being, adult stem cells are routinely improving health and saving lives now, validated by published scientific evidence. There are currently over 2,200 FDA-approved adult stem cell clinical trials either ongoing or completed. The Journal of the American Medical Association noted last year that over 50,000 adult stem cell transplants are done every year around the globe, and while still often experimental, an increasing number go well beyond the well-known standard treatments for cancers or anemias. See Stem

Cell Research Facts for more information and videos from real-life patients.

THEOLOGY ON TAP

All young adults in their 20's and 30's Kris Kranenburg, will be speaking for Theology on Tap on Thursday, August 18th, 7:00 p.m. at the Speakeasy, 19 N High Street in Janesville. The title of Kris’s talk is Indulgences 101. When it comes to indulgences, most Catholics--especially younger ones--have more questions than answers. What exactly are indulgences? Are they still in use in the Church? Can you buy your way out of Purgatory? Didn't indulgences

disappear after the Reformation? Indulgences 101 will give you the truth about this infallible teaching of the Church and show you how this pious practice can lead to a growth in holiness and charity. Kris Kranenburg is on the faculty of the Diocese of Madison's Seat of Wisdom Diocesan Institute. She has a Master of Theological Studies degree from Ave Maria University and teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Kris has worked with parishes and Catholic schools on websites, faith formation, and communication. She lives in Janesville and is blessed with a wonderful husband and two amazing children. Married, single, practicing your faith or not practicing your faith, all are welcome! This is a great opportunity to enrich your faith and form fellowship with other young adults. Drinks will be provided. Dinner may be ordered. If you have any questions, contact Jeff by phone at 262-366-3542, or email at [email protected]. We hope to see you there!
