Twenty Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Monica & St Augustine. Feasts: *there will be a Mass on August 28 at 7:00pm*

The Church, since earlier times, has celebrated the feast of these great saints together, mother and son. Monica, the mother of ‘many tears’ shed for the conversion of Augustine to the Catholic Church. She was exemplar in her marriage as wife and mother and as a Christian woman by her strong faith and devotion. Augustine says: “It was impossible that you, Lord, would not hear the prayers and pay attention to the tears of my mother Monica. She did not ask you gold or silver or any temporal good, but only the spiritual conversion of her son, which was your gift to her”. Monica died in Ostia the year 387 AD. In 1430 her remains were brought to Saint Augustine Church in Rome. Augustine was born in Tagaste a town in the Roman Province of Numidia the year 354. He was of an extraordinary talent but did not follow the faith of her mother and family. He embraced various philosophical currents of the time until he heard the sermons of St Ambrose in Milan and read St Paul’s letters. After experiencing in his mind and heart a great internal struggle, he realized that “You O Lord created us oriented towards You and our hearts are restless until they rest in You”. Aline from his famous book of the Confessions, written after his conversion in 387. He became a monk, priest and bishop in the city of Hippo. His numerous writings, including a Rule followed by the Augustinian Order, have been a source of Christian spirituality through the centuries. He

died in 430 and his tomb is in Pavia. Pope Benedict XVI considers him “his companion in pilgrimage” and Pope Francis “a friend very close to his soul”

To celebrate the lives of these Saints, we will have a Mass on Wednesday August 28, at 7:00pm. Please join us

Holy Family Group *Will Start Meeting Again in September*

We invite all engaged or married couples to join us for our Holy Family evenings generally on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (see Schedule above) for Spiritual Formation, Prayer, and Fellowship. Food is provided. You are welcome but not obligated to bring something for our potluck supper. Children are welcome. We offer faith formation programs for children while the adults have their spiritual program. We conclude each night with the whole family before Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. St Mary’s Youth *Upcoming Meetings Sunday September 8th 5:30pm – 7:00pm*

Since most of the youth are traveling during summer we will continue gathering in

September, invite all youth from 6th grade to the 12th grade to be part of the Young Pilgrims

Youth Group which takes place in the Rectory Conference Room on Most Sundays (See

Schedule above). We gather together first as one group and then into separate groups for

High school students and Middle School students. Come join us for many different

activities including Spiritual Formation, Service Projects, Occasional Sports Events, Concerts,

Fiestas de Santa Mónica & San Agustín 28 de Agosto, *Miércoles 28 de Agosto tendremos una Misa a las 7:00pm*

La Iglesia desde sus primeros tiempos ha celebrado la fiesta de estos grandes santos juntos, madre e hijo. Mónica la “madre de muchas lágrimas derramadas por la conversión de Agustín a la fe Católica. Ella fue una madre y esposa ejemplar además de cristiana de profunda fe y devoción. Agustín dijo: “Era imposible Señor que Tú no oyeras las oraciones y prestaras atención a las lágrimas de mi madre Mónica. Ella no te pedía oro ni plata, ni un favor temporal, sino solo la conversión de su hijo, que era don tuyo”. Mónica muere después del bautismo de Agustín en Ostia, el 387 AD. En el 1430 sus restos se trasladaron a la iglesia de San Agustín en Roma. Agustín nació en Tagaste, una ciudad en la Provincia Romana de Numidia (norte de África) el 354. Era un joven de talento prodigioso pero no siguió la fe de su madre y familia sino que se envolvió por largos años con varias sectas religiosas y filosóficas. Hasta que oyó las homilías de San Ambrosio en Milán y leyó las cartas de San Pablo. Después de experimentar una gran batalla en su mente y su corazón, escribió: “Tu Señor nos ha hecho para Ti y nuestro corazón está inquieto hasta que descanse en Ti”. Una frase de su famoso libro las Confesiones escrito después de su conversión en 387. Después de ese evento vivió como monje, siendo ordenado sacerdote y Obispo en la ciudad de Hippo. Entre los muchos escritos, que incluye la Regla que hasta hoy sigue la Orden de San Agustín, son una fuente de espiritualidad cristiana

a través de los siglos. Agustín murió en el 430 AD y sus restos están en Pavía. Benedicto XVI le considera “su compañero de peregrinaje” y el Papa Francisco “un amigo muy cerca de su alma”.
