Page 3 FROM DESK OF FR. LIJO

FROM DESK OF DEACON DAVE

Jesus makes a profound statement in this week’s scriptures: “How can Satan drive out Satan?”

He is reminding us that evil can never defeat evil. Violence cannot stop violence. Hatred can’t

triumph over hatred. Love is the only thing that can defeat evil. Love is the only thing that can

triumph over hatred or violence. Violence and hatred have no power. They have been ren-

dered powerless through love – not a lukewarm type of love but a deep, lasting, unconditional

kind of love. This kind of love says we will do the loving thing in every situation, with no excep-

tion.

As you well know, this is a very hard thing to accept and to carry out. We have a tendency to

throw out the word “evil” to describe all sorts of things we don’t like or are morally against. The solution for many

of us is to name it, locate it, and try to destroy it whether that “evil” is a person, a group, or sometimes even a coun-

try. Isn’t that how you do it? Fight evil with evil?

Today we are asked to embrace a much different attitude. We should resist the impulse to hurt those who have

wronged us, return violence for violence, or exact revenge on those who have caused us harm. These things will

never help us achieve our goals. We all have people around us who have hurt us deeply for different reasons. It

could be jealousy, envy, personality/character weaknesses, etc. Each of us has a Judas just as Jesus did. Even I have

had a Judas or two in my life and may still have.

“How can Satan drive out Satan?” He can’t. But love, prayer and forgiveness can. I know it’s a hard thing to do but

remember the statement WWJD (What would Jesus do?) We have to remember to love and forgive, not just for to-

day but every time we are wronged in some way.

Blessings, Deacon Dave

The theme for this weekend’s liturgy is sin. We live in a world which denies sin and anything to

do with sin. Our contemporary society tends to disregard or minimize sin or to call it by anoth-

er name, and ignore it and its effects on the people and the society at large. The sense of shame

regarding sin is no longer in the conscience of people and society. The reality of sin has not dis-

appeared, and however people and society try to downplay its presence by renaming it or

denying the personal responsibility for it, sin remains as what it is. And in today’s readings,

Yahweh God in the Book of Genesis, St. Paul, and Jesus identify sin in the life of the people and

society and tell us to avoid sin at all cost and lead a life of sinlessness aided by our faith in God.

What is sin? It is very dif!icult to de!ine sin but going through the catechism of the church and the scriptures we can

almost say sin is an offense against reason, truth and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neigh-

bor. It wounds the nature of humanity and injures human solidarity. It has been de!ined as an utterance, a deed or a

desire contrary to the eternal law. Sin is an offense against God when one violates His Commandments, and it also

rupture the relations between humans. The 1st reading explains the sin of our !irst parents, how they failed to obey

God’s Command, and endured punishment given to them by God. In the gospel, Jesus encourages the people to con-

front evil and sin in their lives. That way they can seek God’s forgiveness and lead a life according to God’s wish.

Thus the readings for today’s liturgy invite us to take a hard look at sin, to call it by name and to take back our re-

sponsibility for it. Similarly, we are challenged to look evil in the eye and, without blinking, own it for the reality that

it is.

We congratulate our Parishioner Steve Moeller who was ordained to the ministry of Deacon. We thank God for call-

ing Steve to His ministry and wish him all the best. May the faithful experience God’s care and love through his min-

istry among them.

Diocese of Jackson Mississippi Missions APPEAL - June 16-17

From Deacon Ted Schreck:

Thank you for the opportunity to come to your parish and

share Christ's love in making this Mission Appeal for the

works of my home diocese, the Catholic Diocese of Jackson

(Mississippi).

A little about me: On June 5, 2016, I was one of six men who

were the !irst permanent deacons ordained in the Catholic

Diocese of Jackson in over 30 years. It's been a wonderful

journey over the past two years as I serve in a parish on the very north end

of the state at Christ the King (Cristo Rey) in Southaven. My hometown bor-

ders Memphis, TN. On a personal note, my wife Anna and I have been mar-

ried for over 26 years and have three amazing children, Mark (24), Benja-

min (21) and Emily (18). Professionally, I am the Director of Work Study

for Memphis Catholic Middle and High School in the neighboring Diocese of

Memphis. In addition to my liturgical roles as deacon, I have continued to

serve as an RCIA catechist for our parish and support the faith formation

and youth ministry efforts of our parish. Finally, I might share that I am

originally from Central Missouri and lived in O'Fallon, St. Charles and St.

Peters from an early age until the summer of 1978. It's changed a lot since

back then.
