We, the members of St. Mark Catholic Church, a Faith Community called as one by Christ to serve and witness in His name, seek to celebrate our Faith through service and evangelization
to each other, our families and our community.

It seems fitting that our readings on this First Sunday of Lent begin with the Old Testament Book of Genesis. The book was first called “Genesis” — ΓΕΝΕΣΙΣ — in the Greek Septuagint translation, as it presents both the origin of the world and mankind, and in particular, the Hebrew people. The book in Hebrew was known by its
opening expression, “In the beginning.”
In today’s particular reading from Genesis 9, we hear of God’s relationship with Noah and his family. God says, “I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you.” God goes on to say, “I set my bow (rainbow) in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings.”
As is often the case, we have lost sight of the significance of the rainbow in relation to our faith. Yet it is biblically confirmed as a sign from God. Some live in areas where rainbows are common, and others in areas where they are rare. Regardless, there is something divine about a rainbow. When you look up in the sky and see a multi-colored arc looking back at you, you should be filled with wonder. It is a reminder that we live in a world of wonder, of beauty, of adventure. A rainbow should give us hope that life really isn’t just about death and taxes, but much, much more. It is a clue to the meaning of the universe and where we stand within it. Pastoral Pondering
Lent, as we all know, focuses on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. One of the traditional ways that many participate in almsgiving is through Operation Rice Bowl. It is a convenient way to translate our fasting into action by placing the money we would have spent on food in the rice bowl for the poor. The Rice Bowl project is sponsored by Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Sadly, over the past few years, questions have been raised about both Catholic Relief Services and the Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) regarding some of the organizations which they have funded, some of whom support policies in opposition to Catholic teaching, especially the promotion of abortion and contraception. Because of this, many Catholics are hesitant to support the efforts of these two organizations. With this in mind, the monies collected this year from Operation Rice Bowl will be used to directly benefit charitable food distribution in our community, both locally and in the Diocese. In this way, we can enter into the Lenten season and know that our efforts are in harmony with Catholic teaching and practice.
From the Pastor
Make a Habit of Spending Time with God – Grow in Christ Re-evaluate how you currently spend your time – How much time do you spend on social media, television, talking
on the phone, shopping, driving to activities? See where you can put in extra time with the Lord to read the Bible, spiritual books and pray. Seek God throughout your day – Turn on Christian radio, Serius XM 129 or EWTN, create your prayer routine, attend Mass, Adoration or Confession. Schedule time with God – Don’t aim to fit it in when you have a chance - set aside the best time you have in the day and treat it like an appointment, guarding it so you are available. When we live our faith by sharing our gifts and caring for others, we allow God’s love to be known and experienced through us. Contact our Stewardship Director at [email protected] if you wish to Grow in Christ, Serve One Another or Share Your Gifts at Saint Mark.
Stewardship Corner
Patiently seek the good in everything and in everyone. “The more you seek it, the more you will find it. The more you find it, the more you will emulate it. The more you emulate it, the more you will inspire others to reach out and grasp all that is good, true, noble, and beautiful in this life and in each other.” ~Matthew Kelly

Respect Life Respect Life - We are Called to be “Watchmen”
Since Roe v. Wade, 60 million babies—created in the image of God—have been silently put to death before they were even born. There was no cry for help, there was no public outrage, and no trumpet sounded to warn the women who felt like abortion was their only option. True, not everyone is equipped to counsel women in the delicate situation of “an unplanned pregnancy.” But we can ALL do something. This is the human rights issue of our time. We cannot plead ignorance or remain apathetic. As Christians, we cannot, and should not, sit idly by and accept this massive slaughter of the innocents. We are called to be the “watchmen” of our brothers and sisters who are defenseless, voiceless and by far the most vulnerable in our society. Pro-Life Articles: www.pro-life-articles.org

The Eucharist and Community
How often have you heard it said that the Church discriminates because she does not allow our non-Catholic brothers and sisters to receive Holy Communion in the Church? The mantra is annoying and it is misleading. First, the Passover meal (where an unblemished lamb is sacrificed) prefigures or foreshadows the Eucharistic Liturgy (Christ becomes the unblemished Paschal sacrifice). Thus, by the command of God, “no foreigner could partake of the Passover sacrifice” without first being made part of the community. The individual had to be circumcised – made part of the community – before he was admitted to Passover. In a like manner, the Church does not permit reception of Holy Communion by non-Catholics, as there is a lack of unity; a non-Catholic does not participate in the unity of the Church. On the other hand, it is wrong to say that a non-Catholic cannot receive Communion in the Catholic Church. As a matter of fact, the Church wants these people to receive Holy Communion! They only have to do what is required of all Catholics: profess the Faith of the Church, be baptized, examine their conscience, fast, go to Mass, and receive Holy Communion. Thus, everyone is welcome to receive Communion, but we are all bound to receiving the Sacrament worthily!
