Deacon Mike’s Reflections
Today, we close out the Christmas Season in our
liturgical year with the celebration of the Baptism of
our Lord. It was just a week ago we celebrated the
manifestation of Jesus, as a child, to the world through
the visit of the magi and recognized as a King and Son
of God through the gifts of gold and incense and his
destiny of death in the gift of myrrh. Now we
celebrate the beginning of Jesus' ministry and
manifestation as the "beloved Son", as we hear the
words of the Father and descent of the Holy Spirit in
the form of a dove. The Baptism of our Lord allows us
to reflect on the meaning of our own Baptism and
how it affects our lives. In that Baptism, we were
welcomed into a new life with Christ, we were made a
new creation through water and the Holy Spirit. We
received the light of Christ to be kept burning brightly
throughout our lives and the white garment we
received or wore symbolized this new life/creation as
our Christian dignity, which was to be kept unstained.
As we remember those signs and symbols of our
Baptism may we be constantly challenged by their
meaning in our faith journey, for we claim to be
disciples of Christ . May we contemplate - how is the
light of Christ burning in our lives, how have we kept
our dignity and that of others unstained? Our goal is
to live out our lives as Catholic Christians to be
"beloved sons and daughters of God" - for we have
been baptized with fire and the Holy Spirit!

January is Poverty Awareness Month: Did you know that
more than 43 million Americans live in poverty. Our faith de-
mands of us a loving response to poverty, hunger, homelessness,
unemployment, and other community issues that affect the poor.
We are called as Catholic Christians to reach out and alleviate the
suffering that we encounter directly in the face of these injustices
and issues within our community and our world. To also work to
shape laws and institutions that allow all people to flourish and to
achieve their potential. P lease consider volunteering for one or
more of our various Justice & Peace outreach ministry opportu-
nities, be generous to those who are in need and ask the Lord to
show you how you can love your neighbor, especially the poor, in
a more authentic way.
