FROM MSGR. TOSI --- Saint Luke Parish offers a number of programs and opportunities for involvement by the youth of the parish. I am truly excited by the formation of a Youth Group for young people from 6th Grade through Senior Year of High School under the guidance of Father Vincent and the Adult Youth Group Committee. All young people are invited to join the Youth Group. If you have young people in your family, encourage them to come out and support the parish Youth Group. This Youth Group joins other activities for young people here at the parish - the Sports Association with its many individual sports programs, the Boys and Girl Scouts with the various age levels; the Youth Choir and altar servers to name just a few. Of course all these programs are possible due to the generosity of countless volunteers. A sincere thank you to one and all! September also marks the return of two major ministries of the parish for our young members - the parish grammar school and the religious education program for boys and girls attending public school. Together our school and religious education program enroll nearly 1,000 students! The parish school is up and running for its 101st year. The school community, under the leadership of its principal, Mrs. Barbara Reiter continues to grow and prosper. Enrollment is up; the financial condition is good; academic excellence is a number one priority and a variety of activities are offered to the students. A parent organization is being formed to strengthen the cooperation among administration, teachers and parents that makes our school a school of excellence. And most importantly our Catholic identity is at the heart of all we do. Today is Catechetical Sunday - which gives us the opportunity to recognize the great work being done by our Religious Education Program under the direction of Sister Katherine Burke, C.S.J. and her many catechists and volunteers. Nearly 500 young people come each week to learn about the Catholic faith and deepening their relationship to Christ. Opportunities for spiritual growth are provided and time for prayer is included. On this Catechetical Sunday the church will bless the catechists in their important ministry. Working together the school and religious education program minister in so many ways to the young people entrusted to our care helping them to grow in mind, body and spirit faithful to the teachings of Jesus. I am most grateful to all who work with and minister to the young people of the parish. Please join me in keeping them in our prayers. God bless. Let us pray for one another, Page 1 The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time 18 September 2011 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York

To the Knights of Columbus - Monsignor Dillon Council for hosting Hospitality Sunday last Sunday, September 11th. Thank you also to the Knights for the donation of a Memorial floral wreath placed by the parish memorial to the victims of the 9/11 tragic events. We are most grateful for their ongoing and generous support of and dedication to the parish. ************************************ DIG WE MUST --- As part of the 100th Anniversary celebration of the parish school, plans were begun to create a new playground on the site of the present small parking lot adjacent to the school building. To be built in memory of the Sisters of St. Dominic, Amityville who founded and staffed the school for most of its 100 years, the playground will be known as “The Dominican Playground”. Funds have been raised and donations given. It is now time to begin work. So - beginning Monday, September 19th work will begin to create a safe and enjoyable play area. As a result this area will NO longer be available for parking. Parking is available across from the church on Clintonville Street and in the large school yard across from the main entrance of the school. We are sorry for any inconvenience

caused by this work. Yet, dig we must for a better Saint Luke Parish. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the universal church, we strive to follow the Lord’s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus.

SPECIAL DAY OF PRAYER --- OCTOBER 4 The feast of Saint Francis of Assisi - October 4 - has been set aside as a Diocesan Day of Prayer to ask God’s blessings and guidance as we move forward with the stra-tegic planning process in order to strengthen and build up the Catholic church in Brook-lyn and Queens. In observance of the Day of Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be observed here in the church from after the 8:30am Mass until 5:00pm. All our parish-ioners are asked to set aside some time for prayer this day as the Diocese seeks God’s assistance. With the assurance of God’s help, we do not fear but live in hope. Please note: The usual Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the first Friday of October - October 7th will NOT take place. Please note this change to our regular schedule. ALSO ON OCTOBER 4TH --- Blessing of the Animals will take place at 4:00pm in the parking lot on Clintonville Street in front of the newly installed statue of Saint Francis of Assisi. Bring your pets for God’s blessing as we celebrate the good-ness of God’s many gifts. SAVE THE DATE --- The Blessing of the new parking lot and the statue of Saint Francis of Assisi will take place on Sunday, October 2nd during the 1pm Mass. A procession to the statue of St. Francis will follow Mass.

2011 Annual Catholic Appeal Thank you --- Thank you --- As of September 12th a total of $130,932.83 has been given by 473 donors with $118,623.83 already received. This is truly remarkable and once again shows the generosity of so many parishioners. Please consider joining your fellow parishioners by making your gift to the Appeal. God bless. One Bread --- One Body One Vibrant Church *********************************** SECOND COLLECTION --- Next weekend, September 24 & 25 there will be two collections. The first col-lection is for the support of the parish. The second collection is For Support of Catholic Education. Your generosity, as always, is greatly appreciated.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! During the summer months as parish-ioners enjoy summer vacation and trips to visit family and friends they attend Mass in other churches. As a result, collection amounts during July and August are usually lower than the rest of the year. However, our expenses remain the same and bills need to be paid. Add to this summer Hurricane Irene which arrived on a Sunday and we need your help! So - please consider helping the parish to meet a number of outstanding bills. If possible could you make up for any Sundays you were away from the parish? And maybe you could add a few dollars to your weekly offering. Whatever you could do would be greatly appreciated. God bless. Msgr. Tosi *********************************** IMPORTANT MEETING --- Of all the parish groups who hosted a Hospitality Sunday last year with Msgr.
