From January 26th to 29th 2017, the Univer-

sité du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR) will be

host to the Quebec Engineering Competition

(QEC). The QEC is an annual event in which

nearly 250 students from all Quebec engi-

neering schools and faculties compete. En-

dorsed by the Quebec Confederation for En-

gineering Student Outreach (QCESO), the

QEC aims to shine the spotlight on future

engineers’ knowledge and social skills

through many challenges over the course of

four days.

This year, the QEC’s theme is “St-Lawrence

Engineering”. The St-Lawrence, this majestic

river, gulf and estuary in the heart of the

province of Quebec, is the cradle of our soci-

ety. For years, it was the only way of com-

munication and our sole link to the rest of

the world. This privileged relation nourished,

inspired and transported us. Beyond the

maritime aspects, this theme includes,

amongst others, all the challenges linked to

supplying coastal communities, the manage-

ment of human impacts on the gulf and

coastal engineering infrastructure. Every dis-

cipline of engineering will be involved and

will allow students from every domain to

stand out.

Partners of the 2017 edition of the QEC will be key players in the

success of the competition. This event will give our partners pres-

tige and visibility amongst the public and future engineers. Specifi-

cally, here are the advantages that we offer our partners.

NETWORKING

Participants of the QEC are amongst the best engineering students

in Quebec. Besides having won their spot in their competition by

standing out in their university’s qualifications, they demonstrate

the skills and aptitudes employers are looking for. The 2017 QEC is

therefore the ideal place to recruit future employees or interns.

Networking opportunities are numerous at the competition and are

modulated according to the involvement of the associated partners.

Besides the opening cocktail and the closing banquet, our partners

are invited to exchange with the students during the events and the

competitions where they can be judges.

VISIBILITY

We offer many categories of visibility according to the involvement

of the partner that range from having your logo on our website to

being the official sponsor of the competition.

SPECIAL AWARDS

Our partners also have the possibility to present one of the special

awards during the closing banquet. The recipients of the special

awards are given an independent trophy identified to the partner’s

image.

PARTNERSHIP DETAILS

OPENING COCKTAIL

The opening cocktail kicks off the competition. Partners and competitors

will have the opportunity to mingle in a pleasant atmosphere while savor-

ing regional specialties. Holding a kiosk during this cocktail offers great vis-

ibility for your business to attract future candidates or clients.

COMPETITOR RESUMES

To qualify and participate in the Quebec Engineering Competition is pres-

tigious for an engineering student. Therefore, the competitors are most of-

ten amongst the best engineering students in Quebec. By becoming a part-

ner, you will have access to competitor’s resumes, which can facilitate the

recruitment of promising candidates.

PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL

Upon their arrival at the QEC, each participant will receive a sponsored bag

containing many items useful during the competition. Generally, they re-

ceive notepads, pens, rulers, USB keys and promotional brochures from

our partners, along with the official program of the competition. This is a

good occasion to offer participants useful promotional material to get them

to know more about your business.

ASSOCIATED EVENT

By becoming a partner, your business will have the opportunity to sponsor

an associated event. The first type of associated event is one of the meals

during the competition. The second type of event is sponsorship of a spe-

cial award. The goal of special awards is to reward a team or a participant

that particularly stood out during the competition. This year, special awards

will be determined in collaboration with our partners. The third type of as-

sociated event is a competition. By sponsoring a competition, you can help

define it and you will have priority when choosing the judges. Furthermore,

the official partner of the QEC will benefit from increased visibility, includ-

ing promotional material and press releases.

CLOSING BANQUET

The closing banquet is the occasion to reveal the winners of each category

and of the special prizes. Beyond attending the banquet, our partners also

have the opportunity to deliver a speech, or hand out the trophies of the

competition they have sponsored.

CHARITY EVENT

We strongly believe in supporting the next generation in engineering and

the importance of helping our community. Therefore, during the second

evening of the competition a charity event will take place to support a local

youth development organisation. Main partners are invited to contribute to

the animation of the event, which can be a good networking activity and

an opportunity to contribute to the development of the community.

The eight competitions of the QEC allow students to put in practise a

large range of engineering skills.

SENIOR DESIGN

Senior Design is the cornerstone of the QEC. Teams registered in this

category have 12 hours to create a prototype of a solution to the prob-

lem they are presented on the day of the competition. At the end of this

marathon, teams demonstrate the usefulness of their solution by per-

forming, in front of an audience, the task that their prototype is expected

to accomplish. This competition, planned for teams of four people, is typ-

ically reserved to students who have accumulated at least 60 credits to-

wards their bachelor’s degree.

JUNIOR DESIGN

The Junior Design competition is the Senior Design’s younger brother.

The rules are similar, but the problem will be easier to solve. Generally,

teams have four to six hours to build their prototype. This competition is

reserved to participants who have accumulated less than 60 credits to-

wards their bachelor’s degree.

DEBATES

Engineers can’t count on their management and design skills alone; they

must also perfect their communication skills to correctly navigate a world

in which multidisciplinarity is becoming more and more important. The

debate competition uses this premise to shine the spotlight on future en-

gineers entangled in verbal jousts, arguing with tact, eloquence and rep-

artee. In this competition, participants face off in teams of two, and de-

velop their arguments on the spot over a position and a theme that is de-

cided for them.

12

CONSULTING

Consulting being one of the most popular engineering disciplines, the

QEC makes a point of presenting, every year, the consulting competition.

During this challenge, teams of four participants have six to eight hours

to come up with a complete solution to a complex problem. Their solu-

tions must then be presented to a jury, emphasizing the participants’ or-

atory and persuasion skills.

SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION

The often complex work of engineers forces them to rely on abstract and

intangible concepts. This is why they must know how to simplify and

communicate their knowledge in a clear and concise way. The scientific

communication competition allows participants, alone or in teams of two,

to demonstrate their communicative skills by clearly explaining a com-

plex engineering subject. Presentations are evaluated by a jury.

REENGINEERING

Technology evolves so quickly that it’s sometimes a good idea to take a

step back to better understand the next level of a product. More and

more, engineers are invited to enhance and optimize what seem to be

mundane products around us. The reengineering competition aims to test

participants, in teams of two, at making existing products better at meet-

ing new needs. Solutions will be presented to a jury, allowing participants

to not only demonstrate their imagination and technical skills, but also

their oratory skills.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN

For the public, engineers represent invention and innovation. Under this

category, people who see engineers as modern times’ Da Vincies will be

well served, as participants will hold kiosks presenting innovative ideas

they came up with. The different concepts shown will demonstrate that

engineering in Québec is alive and well.

RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS - GRADUATE

In this competition, graduate participants present a Master’s or Doctoral

project. This competition is run in two parts: a poster session open to the

public and judges, followed by a presentation in front of a panel of judg-

es. Presentations will be evaluated on the quality and clarity of the

presentation, degree of innovation and technical feasibility. The quality of

visual aids will also be evaluated.
