Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP

Come and join us every Wednesday

morning after daily Mass for Our Lady

of Perpetual Help Novena. We start

the Novena with Rosary and end with

the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Come!

Pray and sing with us beautiful hymns

of praise to our beautiful Lady.

    GIVING OF ONESELF

Scientists have recently begun to discuss the idea that the primary force behind all life in the universe is self-gift. This is how everything from galaxies to human babies are born and sustained. If we read the opening of today’s passage from Isaiah correctly, we see that he anticipated twentieth-century scientists by over twenty five hundred years. Using the self-giving example of the rain and snow clouds that water the earth that then yields fruit, which in turn is given over to nourish creatures, Isaiah leads us to understand that the primary force behind all life is the word of God. The ultimate giving of that word, we believe, was Jesus Christ, who, in the greatest revelation of divine love, gave of himself on the cross. To what degree are we in touch with that self-giving God in whose image we are made? To what extent do we really follow the self-giving example of Christ into whose death and resurrection we were baptized, whose ultimate self‑gift we celebrate every week in the Eucha-rist? With God’s help, our lives can be like Isaiah’s rain and snow, and we will not return to heaven until we have done our part to make the earth fruitful. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    LITURGIA DE LAS HORAS III

  • L A C O L U M N A D E L P A S T O R

T H E P A S T O R ’ S C O L U M N During the past several weeks, we have experienced many special Eucharistic Celebrations. The Easter season ended with Pentecost Sunday, which is the anniversary of our Catholic Church with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost Sunday, we read the Gospel of John that tells us when Jesus stood in the midst of His disciples and said “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” We then celebrated the Feast of the Holy Trinity; the revelation of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, but one Triune God. This was followed by Corpus Christi; that is, The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus proclaimed that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood would have eternal life. This feast was followed by the celebrations of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These celebrations emphasized the true love for us, human beings, in the heart of our Lord Jesus Christ. This led us into last week, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Jesus handed to Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Peter and Paul left their lives and world as they knew it, a life of darkness and worldly things, in order to become faithful and true followers of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ Himself taught them the word of God. For the sake of our souls, He taught them everything they would need to continue on with their “Journey of Faith,” to spread the word of God to all they encountered. Jesus Christ taught them what they needed to know in order to build and establish His Church on earth. Peter and Paul were able to spread the word of salvation to all and establish our Catholic Church and pass their heritage of faith to the next generations through out time. Over hundreds of years the Catholic Church has had over 250 Popes, along with thousands of Bishops and millions of clergy worldwide that have continued to grow our Catholic Church by spreading the word of God. In today’s world we all need to be like Peter and Paul, we need to set the example of what a Catholic truly is. All of us are in communion with the true Catholic Church that Jesus Christ founded. It is up to us to continue to keep, maintain, and build our Catholic Church. We can do this by being good stewards of our time, talent and treasures. It is up to us to make sure that we have a vibrant Church to pass on to our next generations, not just a physical place to call home, not just a building but we need to pass on our knowledge of faith, the true teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. During this past month of celebrations we also celebrated First Communions and Confirmations to many children of our Parish. These weren’t just milestones; these were Sacraments of the Catholic Church. This is the beginning of their knowledge of our Catholic faith. It is up to us as a community to continue helping them to grow in their journey of faith. The children of our parish are the future of our Catholic Church. May Almighty God Bless us and Guide us with His Holy Presence as we continue to build His Body, the Church in order to remain in communion with Him.

WHAT IS STEWARDSHIP? WHAT IDENTIFIES A STEWARD? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.

    TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

With the Reformation, some early Protestants, including the “Anabaptists,” rejected infant baptism in favor of “believer’s baptism.” Against Orthodox and Catholic practice, which favored baptism as soon as possible for a newborn, these movements desired that the candidate for baptism speak for him- or herself at a mature age, not through godparents as an infant. Today, it is clear that they were rejecting a very ancient practice (even as early as the second century) of baptizing children of all ages. Children came first in ancient baptismal ceremonies, and someone would speak for them. Gregory of Nazianzen wanted to delay the baptism of children to three years of age, since at that age they could retain at least some impression of the liturgy. He made an exception for the very ill, who were to be baptized ahead of the annual Easter baptism. That means that infants and children were normally baptized together with adults, and that everyone received confirmation and the Eucharist. The tone of the early bishops’ writings is generous and compassionate, and seeks to build up the eucharistic assembly by widely celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit. If a priest celebrated baptism, then the gift of the Spirit was postponed for the bishop, but with no regard for the person’s age. So, until the fifth century, confirmation was for infants, too. Rev.
