Religious Education From Pflaum's Summer Family Corners, something to consider about today's Gospel: "Jesus reminds us that when we trust him, things will be easier. He compares us to oxen being yoked together. Old oxen are yoked with young ones to teach them how to avoid pitfalls and injury. When we trust Jesus, he will teach us the way to go. Question of the week: Who in your life is an example of holiness and why?" Today, our special collection supports the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Your donation today helps restore the Church and build the future in more than 20 countries still struggling to recover from Communist rule. Funds from this collection support reconstruction, education, formation, and poverty outreach. Please be generous to the collection today. For more information, please visit www.usccb.org/ccee.

Air Conditioning Collection

It’s not too late to turn your envelope in for this purpose. Envelopes were sent with your monthly envelope packets. Some use it and some don’t! Churches, businesses, and homeowners face higher energy costs. We are continually taking steps to conserve energy. We are asking everyone to help with the added expense of utilizing the air conditioning which we all enjoy!

Emmanuel Dining Room – Friday, July 10 St. Joseph’s continues to provide a chicken meal to Emmanuel Dining Room once a month. Volunteers purchase and cook 24 chicken thighs and/or bring various desserts. Our next date to deliver our meal for Emmanuel Dining Room is Friday, July 10. Please have your cooked chicken and desserts at the Family Center by 9 A.M. on that day. We can always use more chicken cookers. Peg Janes (302) 656-3635.

Pastor’s Column SHARE THE BURDEN

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). These words of our Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Connecting these two messages might help us on our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone, for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us remember that we can share that burden with our Christian sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest.

As you know, on Sunday, June 28th we began to celebrate 7:30 and 10:30 Mass in the Church and Family Center.

Our daily (Monday – Friday) 7 a.m. Mass resumed on Monday, June 29th in the church.

No Saturday Mass at this time.

Confessions will continue to be held on Saturday only from 8:30 – 9:30 in the Family Center only.

To all volunteers, thank you for the ways you serve Christ and his church. If you would like to volunteer to help during this time, please call the rectory at 658.7017 or email [email protected]. We may need extra hands to help keep our beautiful church cleaned and sanitized after masses as well as church monitors.

A warm welcome is extended to all who

come to our faith community. We are a diverse and vibrant community of people sharing faith and worship together. Our parishioners truly become part of the parish community through ministry, volunteerism, educational and social opportunities. As we slowly return to church, we will have many services and activities and encourage you to actively participate and serve in our parish life. If we can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

If you would like to register, you may do so on- line at www.stjosephonthebrandywine.org.

• Those over 60 and vulnerable are asked to remain homebound until the restrictions are lifted. To stay connected and worship from home, our parish will continue to video the Sunday Mass found at our website.

• A dispensation from Sunday obligation is given for the vulnerable and those still uncomfortable to be in public at this time.

• Those who show symptoms of a virus are asked to stay home. Please check your temperature.

• The faithful are asked to sit 6 feet apart from each other. Members of the same household may sit together.

Should I bring my child/children to Mass? Yes, we certainly welcome them! We appreciate that parents may not want their children in a place surrounded by people in masks. Government guidelines require masks in public for those 13 and over but we all have been extra cautious. The more important question to answer in regard to bringing your child/children to mass is whether they are old enough to stay with you in the pew. In our current situation children moving around church would make some nervous and compromise social distancing. We all have been trying to make life as normal as possible for our children. What we ask of you: Stay home if you are or have been sick. • Wear your face covering during mass. • Limit what you touch. • Use open doors, avoid handles. • Do not shake hands • Sanitize hands entering and leaving. • Do not congregate. • Limit the use of the restroom. Practice • Pratice good hygiene • DO NOT send children to restrooms alone.

Everyday Faith

The Scapular is two small pieces of cloth connected by cords and worn around the neck. This sacramental is adapted from the traditional scapular, part of the garb won by some religious orders that was worn over the head, covering the chest and back and reaching almost to the floor. Scapulars differ according to the devotion. The brown scapular is Our Lady of Mount Carmel, white, the Holy Face of Jesus, The Holy Heart of Jesus and Mary, and the Holy Trinity), blue, Immaculate Conception, St. Michael the Archangel, green, Immaculate Heart of Mary, red, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Precious Blood of Jesus, purple, St. Joseph and black, the seven sorrows of Mary.
